Fifty years ago this morning, the SS Edmund Fitzgerald sank during a storm on Lake Superior.
The ship, carrying iron ore from Duluth, Minnesota, encountered a powerful gale while en route to a steel mill at Zug Island near Detroit, Michigan. Despite being a massive and well-regarded vessel, the Fitzgerald suffered catastrophic damage in the storm. All 29 crew members aboard were lost and no bodies were ever recovered.
The tragedy was immortalized by Canadian Gordon Lightfoot’s 1976 song, The Wreck of the Edmund Fitzgerald, which became a hit and remains as a tribute to the lost crew.
