5 Things You Need To Know For February 13, 2026

February 13, 2026 5:55 am Published by

February 13th is the 44th day of the year. There are 321 days remaining until the end of the year.

It’s Friday the 13th.

Considered the most unlucky day on the calendar in Western society. In Italy, Friday the 17th is considered a day of bad luck.

Friday the 13th happens at least once every year but can’t occur any more than three times in the same year. A Friday the 13th occurs during any month that begins on a Sunday. 2026 actually has three Friday the 13ths — the others are March 13 and November 13.

Motorcyclists will head to Port Dover to celebrate today. Check out PD13.com for more info.

Happy World Radio Day! (It’s a real thing!)

Worldwide radio remains the most widely consumed medium. With its unmatched reach, radio has the power to shape how we experience diversity — giving every voice a place to be heard. Radio continues to be one of the most trusted and used media in the world.

This year’s theme is, “Radio and Artificial Intelligence: AI is a tool, not a voice.”

World Radio Day was proclaimed in 2011 by UNESCO and endorsed by the United Nations General Assembly in 2012 as a UN International Day.

Tomorrow is Valentine’s Day.

Valentine’s Day is the most widely celebrated unofficial holiday in the world.

Candy is still king — about 56% of shoppers plan to buy sweets, followed by flowers, greeting cards, an evening out, and jewelry. And Valentine’s Day isn’t only for romantic partners — 33% plan to buy gifts for friends, and a record 35% are even buying for pets this year.

A few interesting facts…

  • The Catholic Church recognizes at least 3 different saints named Valentine, all of whom were martyred, one for performing secret weddings for young lovers.
  • Pope Gelasius declared February 14th “St Valentine’s Day” around 498 AD, in part to replace an ancient Roman fertility festival.
  • About 1 billion Valentine cards are exchanged, making it the 3rd largest card-sending occasion after Christmas and Fathers Day.
  • It’s also the 4th-biggest flower-selling occasion.
  • Teachers receive the most Valentines Day cards, followed by school children, mothers, wives, and then sweethearts.

Sunday is National Flag of Canada Day.

At the stroke of noon on February 15, 1965, Canada’s red and white maple leaf flag was raised for the very first time on Parliament Hill. On the same day in 1996, National Flag of Canada Day was declared.

Our national flag is a symbol that unites Canadians and reflects the common values we take pride in — equality, freedom and inclusion.

Flags are changed daily at the Parliament buildings and the Peace Tower in Ottawa. The flags that are taken down are offered to Canadians across the country. If you would like a free flag, you can submit your name here. The waiting period for both Peace Tower and other Parliament Hill flags exceeds 100 years.

Monday is Family Day.

Family Day is not a national statutory holiday, it’s observed in New Brunswick, Alberta, Manitoba, Ontario, Saskatchewan and in British Columbia.

Family Day was originally created to give people time to spend with their families but it also provides a day off between New Years Day and Good Friday as they are approximately three months apart. It was added to the calendar after the 2007 Provincial Election. Liberal leader Dalton McGuinty promised to add it if he was named Premier.
