Today is Ash Wednesday.

It marks the start of Lent in the Christian calendar — a 40-day period of prayer, reflection and preparation leading up to Easter. Many Christians attend church services where ashes are placed on their foreheads in the shape of a cross. For many Catholics, Ash Wednesday is also a day of fasting and abstaining from meat.

Lent continues for 40 days, ending during Holy Week and leading into Good Friday and Easter Sunday.
