Tomorrow is Fergie Jenkins’ 83rd birthday.
Born and raised in Chatham before starting his Major League Baseball career. He played from 1965 to 1983 for the Philadelphia Phillies, Chicago Cubs, Texas Rangers and Boston Red Sox.
A Cy Young winner for best pitcher, he won 20 or more games 7 times. He had over 3,000 strikeouts during his career and his 284 victories are the most by a black pitcher in major league history. In the late 60’s, Fergie played basketball in the offseason with the Harlem Globetrotters.
Jenkins was the first Canadian to be inducted into the National Baseball Hall of Fame in 1991; he remained the only one until Larry Walker’s induction in 2020.
