A\u00a0religious feast day honouring the Irish patron saint who brought Christianity to Ireland;\u00a0now we celebrate with green beer.<\/p>\n

With rare exceptions, March 17 always falls during the Christian holy season of Lent, when alcohol consumption was prohibited by the Church. But on Saint Patrick\u2019s feast day, the ban on alcohol was lifted, presumably because it was a feast day, and feasting usually included alcohol.<\/p>\n

St. Patrick\u2019s Day is celebrated in more countries around the world than any other single-day national festival.<\/p>\n

One of the most recognizable St. Patrick’s Day traditions happened over the weekend when the Chicago River was dyed green. Since 1962, Chicago has dyed the river green in honor of the Irish in the city.<\/p>\n

The tradition started with a dye plumbers used to test for leaks in pipes. Now, the city uses a more environmentally friendly powder made from vegetables.<\/p>\n

Forty pounds of powdered dye are used. They have a \u201csecret recipe\u201d for the dye and use three boats to spread it \u2014 the first two dump the dye in the river & the third boat mixes it up. It stays green for 24 to 48 hours.<\/p>\n
