The Indianapolis 500<\/a> takes place Sunday, continuing its legacy as \u201cThe Greatest Spectacle in Racing.\u201d The event features 33 drivers competing over 200 laps and 500 miles (804 km) in front of more than 300,000 fans at Indianapolis Motor Speedway<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Held annually on Memorial Day weekend since 1911 \u2014 with only brief interruptions during the First and Second World Wars \u2014 Sunday\u2019s race will be the 109th running of the Indy 500.<\/p>\n\n\n

Ontario Place officially opened on May 22, 1971. It was built on artificial islands along Lake Ontario and originally featured pavilions, water rides, the Children\u2019s Village, and the futuristic IMAX theatre.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The final construction cost was about $29 million \u2014 equivalent to well over $200 million today after inflation.<\/p>\n\n\n

After decades as a seasonal attraction, most of the amusement-style operations closed in 2012 as the provincial government pursued redevelopment plans. Since then, parts of the site have reopened as public parkland, including Trillium Park and waterfront trails, while the RBC Amphitheatre continues to host summer concerts.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The current redevelopment plan is highly controversial. The Ontario government\u2019s proposal includes a large privately operated wellness\/spa, new entertainment spaces, and major infrastructure work. Supporters argue it will revitalize aging public lands and create year-round activity, while critics object to the privatization of waterfront space, the cost to taxpayers, environmental concerns, and the transparency of the approval process.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Splash Works<\/a> at Canada’s Wonderland<\/a> was officially scheduled to open today, but the weather has forced the park to push that back.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

“Inclement weather\u201d will keep Splash Works closed on Saturday and Sunday, instead it’ll open next weekend on Saturday, May 31st.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Splash Work is a 20-acre water park that features 17 different water slides and various water attractions, like cliff jumping at Mountain Bay Cliffs or the drop-launch chamber of Muskoka Plunge. There is also a lagoon and wading pool for families with young children that visit the park.\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The rest of Canada\u2019s Wonderland is already open to guests. <\/p>\n\n\n\n
