Holy Mackinaw – Joe’s going to get a doctorate robe today.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The former voice of the Toronto Maple Leafs<\/a> will receive an honorary Doctor of Laws degree from University of Windsor<\/a> during Spring Convocation, recognizing a broadcasting career that spanned more than four decades.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Bowen wrapped up his final season calling Leafs games earlier this year, closing the book on one of the most recognizable careers in Canadian hockey media. Known for his iconic \u201cHoly Mackinaw!\u201d goal calls, Bowen became the soundtrack of Saturday nights and playoff runs for generations of Leafs fans.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Two Quebec communities are locked in a feud over who deserves to be called the \u201cMaple Capital.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

For decades, Plessisville has branded itself as the \u201cWorld\u2019s Capital of Maple.\u201d But earlier this year, Mirabel trademarked the title \u201cInternational Capital of Maple,\u201d sparking outrage from Plessisville officials.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Quebec produces nearly three-quarters of the world\u2019s maple syrup, making the title a matter of pride \u2014 and tourism dollars. Mirabel says the two titles are different enough to coexist, while Plessisville argues its maple identity is being copied. For now, the syrup showdown remains at a stalemate.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Today is the 101st anniversary of the first flight of the Goodyear Blimp<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n

On June 3, 1925, an airship built by the Goodyear Tire and Rubber Company named \u201cPilgrim\u201d took to the skies over Akron, Ohio. The military used Goodyear blimps for observation and reconnaissance during World Wars I and II. Goodyear built approximately 25 blimps for the U.S. military between 1917 and 1925, Pilgrim became the company’s first airship to be used for marketing and public relations. Only four Goodyear Blimps still exist.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Each blimp can carry nine passengers along with the crew. The seats have no seat belts.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

If punctured, the worst that will happen is that the blimp will slowly lose altitude. Good thing, too, since the company reports that a blimp is shot at about 20 times a year.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Keep an eye this weekend, as the blimp is scheduled to circle the Nascar race at Michigan International Speedway on Sunday.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
