An act of parliament in 1957 made the 2nd Monday in October \u2018a day of general thanksgiving for the bountiful harvest with which Canada has been blessed\u2019.<\/p>\n
Many historians believe the first North American Thanksgiving event occurred in Newfoundland in 1578. That would put it 43 years before the Pilgrims landing in Massachusetts in 1621.<\/p>\n
It became an annual Canadian tradition in 1879, celebrated on the same day as the USA. It was later moved ahead to reflect the earlier harvest season.<\/p>\n
