LIFESTYLE

The Philadelphia Insectarium was robbed of roughly 7,000 bugs, spiders, scorpions, millipedes, frogs, and snakes were stolen in total, and, uh, no one seems to know where they are.

According to the museum’s owner, the massive “live-insect heist” cost the museum nearly 80 percent of its insect population, a staggering $40,000 haul and security footage of the heist caught a couple of employees pulling off the job. They allegedly managed to slowly sneak bins of bugs out of the museum over the course of a few days.  Among the thousands of stolen insects the thieves allegedly stole a bunch of warty glowspot roaches, some venomous red spot assassin bugs, predators with an extremely painful bite ; and one six-eyed sand spider, a spindly, easily camouflaged monster whose venom can kill you.  Police have searched the homes of the two suspects but they still can’t find all the bugs: They’ve only managed to recover about a dozen, meaning thousands of spiders, scorpions, and insects could literally be anywhere right now. As to motive they believe the two planned to sell them.

There’s a guy named Carlos Zetina who’s a student at the University of Calgary.  And last week, he was at a bar on campus when he met a girl named Nicole.  They hit it off, but she accidentally typed her number into his phone wrong.

So the next day, he found every Nicole in the student directory . . . all 246 of them . . . and he sent them an email to try to find that one special Nicole.

But . . . it didn’t work exactly like he planned for two reasons.

  1. The Nicole he met wasn’t in the directory, so she wasn’t one of the 246 he emailed.
  2. And he didn’t BCC everyone, he just plopped all their addresses into an email.  So they started replying to EACH OTHER, and cut him off the email chain.  Now they’re becoming friends. There actually IS a bright side here for Carlos, though.  One of those Nicoles DID know the Nicole he was looking for, and now she and Carlos are in touch and they’re planning to go on a date.

TODAY’S GOOD NEWS

It’s amazing anyone has this good of a memory.  54-year-old Vilma Wong is a nurse at a children’s hospital near San Francisco.  And last month, she recognized a new doctor’s name when she saw his ID badge.

28-year-old Brandon Seminatore is a new resident at the hospital.  He’s studying to be a childhood neurologist.  (His last name is pronounced Sem-in-uh-TOR-ee)

And Vilma knew his name, because he was one of her patients almost THREE DECADES ago.

Brandon was born about two months premature at the same hospital back in 1990.  He only weighed 2 pounds 6 ounces, and spent 40 days in intensive care.

And even though Vilma’s seen thousands of patients since then, she still recognized his last name, and even remembered his dad was a cop.

Brandon’s parents actually told him to be on the lookout for her, because she was their favorite nurse.  But she found him first.  Then after they met, he texted his parents about it, and his dad sent back a photo of her holding him as a baby.

Vilma says it’s pretty crazy how it all came full circle, and that getting to work with someone she helped save is the “best reward a nurse could get.”

Chocolate Chip Cookies Are as Addicting as Cocaine

According to a new study out of Ohio State University, it turns out chocolate chip cookies are just about as addictive as COCAINE.  Here’s why . . .

  1. Sugar is incredibly addictive, which you probably know already.  And chocolate chip cookies are loaded with the stuff . . . with more than two teaspoons per cookie.

  1. The fat in the cookies also gets you hooked.

  1. The chocolate chips have a small amount of a compound that trigger your brain in the same spot that WEED does, which makes you happy.

  1. And finally, the nostalgia that comes from the taste and especially the smell of the cookies gives you another temporary shot of good feelings.

So when those four things come together, it’s kind of amazing that we’re not all shoving chocolate chip cookies into our mouths RIGHT NOW.

  1. Time is running short to get out of the way of Hurricane Florence, a monster of a storm that has a region of more than 10 million people in its sights.

Forecasters said wind speeds have dropped from a high of 140 mph (225 kph) to 110 mph (175 kph), reducing it from a Category 4 storm to a Category 2, and additional fluctuations and weakening were likely as it swirled toward land. But authorities warned Florence has an enormous wind field that has been growing larger, raising the risk of the ocean surging on to land and making Florence extremely dangerous.

The National Hurricane Center’s best guess was that Florence would blow ashore as early as Friday afternoon around the North Carolina-South Carolina line, then move westward with a potential for catastrophic inland flooding that could swamp homes, businesses and farm fields.

About 5.25 million people live in areas under hurricane warnings or watches, and 4.9 million live in places covered by tropical storm warnings or watches

  1. The Humboldt Broncos tried to emerge from the grip of tragedy Wednesday night by playing some hockey and raising banners to honour all the people who were on their team bus when it crashed in April. Family members and fans cheered through tears at Elgar Petersen Arena as 29 yellow and green flags were unfurled honouring the 13 injured and remembering the 16 dead.

The Broncos came up short in an emotional first regular-season game before the ceremony.

The Nipawin Hawks, last year’s Saskatchewan Junior Hockey League champions and the same team the Broncos were travelling to face when the crash happened, rode two late second-period goals to a 2-1 victory.

The evening began with eight of the surviving players who aren’t with the team anymore dropping the puck in the ceremonial first faceoff.

And while some of the survivors dropped the puck, two others suited up and played.

Brayden Camrud and Derek Patter are the only two players who were involved in the crash and are back on the Broncos this season.
