Mitchell Tenpenny Wrote Song About Ex-girlfriend
November 27, 2018 12:11 pmMitchell Tenpenny’s hit single “Drunk Me” is a pretty autobiographical song. Mitchell co-wrote the tune about an ex-girlfriend, and he even went so far as to cast a woman in the video who looks very similar to his ex.
While the song is one hundred percent true, Mitchell says he harbors no animosity toward his ex.
“Well, she’s great, amazing, wish (her) nothing but the best, obviously, but sometimes things don’t work out and that’s what the song’s about. It’s when you try to drink someone off your mind, and you sit there and you drown in it because you’re never gonna get them off your mind. You just take more drinks and more drinks and I remember that, that’s why this song’s from first sentence to the end it’s accurate. It’s what I’ve deal with. It’s what I’ve gone to the bar and tried to achieve and it doesn’t work out, so when I wanted to make the video and I had that option to make it as real as possible I said, ‘What the hell, let’s go for it.’ She’s probably seen it. She probably sees the little similarities, and again, nothing bad, sometimes it doesn’t work out but I wanted it to be that for me. I remember that Justin Timberlake/Britney Spears video back in the day and I wanted a little . . . Not to compare the two. I’m not even close to Justin but you gotta have a little fun with it sometimes.”
Mitchell is of course referring to Justin Timberlake’s “Cry Me A River” video which featured a Britney Spears look-alike.
“Drunk Me” sits in the Top Five on the country charts. It’s the debut release from his upcoming album, Telling All My Secrets, which will be released on December 14th. Mitchell will celebrate with the Telling All My Secrets Album Release tour, which kicks off on December 8th in Rome, Georgia and visits 12 cities including Nashville, Chicago and Denver with special guests, up-and-coming artists Adam Hambrick, Seaforth and Ross Ellis. Every ticket purchased online includes the new album.
