Songwriter Brett James Remembered By Country Stars
September 22, 2025 8:18 amNashville was saddened by the passing of Brett James and his family, who lost their lives in a plane crash on Thursday, September 18.
Brett is a singer and songwriter who has worked with dozens of country stars. He wrote one of Carrie Underwood’s biggest hits, “Jesus Take the Wheel.”
Here’s what Carrie had to say,
“Some things are just unfathomable. The loss of Brett James to his family, friends, and our music community is too great to put into words. Brett’s passing is leaving a hole in all of us that I fear won’t ever go away. It will forever be a reminder that this life is but a moment . . . we have to make the most of each day we’re given here on Earth. Each day is a gift . . . Love you, man. I’ll see you again someday.”
Brett also wrote Kenny Chesney’s “When the Sun Goes Down,” and hits for Billy Ray Cyrus, Martina McBride, and Rascal Flatts, with Jessica Andrews’ 2001 tune, “Who I Am,” becoming his first country number one.
“Jesus, Take the Wheel” earned James a 2006 Grammy for Best Country Song, as well as the 2005 ACM Single of the Year and the 2006 ASCAP Country Song of the Year.
