Vince Gill Explains Decision To Perform At Kennedy Center Honors
March 22, 2026 7:00 amVince Gill revealed why he performed at December’s Kennedy Center Honors despite the venue’s political controversies under President Trump’s changes.
He told Rolling Stone his 43-year friendship with honoree George Strait made the decision easy.
“That was a hard yes. I did it for George,” he explained, emphasizing he avoids political advocacy to prevent alienating fans.
“I’m a conservative guy on a lot of issues. I’m a liberal guy on a lot of issues. You can call me ‘woke,’ you can call me ‘Bible thumper,’ you can call me all those things, and I think a lot of them are true. But I don’t think you have to just sit in one lane and only be in that lane.”
The Kennedy Center became politically charged after Trump made sweeping changes, including board restructuring and adding his name to the facade, leading to artist cancellations and a recent board vote to close for two-year renovations.
