A Dramatic Rescue Near Toronto
July 8, 2022 5:22 amOne of the five men who jumped in to save a man from a burning vehicle Monday in Mississauga said the rescue happened “literally the nick of time” before the car exploded in flames.
Ben Sykes says he and his wife were driving on the QEW when they saw a moving vehicle on fire that eventually crashed into a ditch.
He says “I saw somebody with a car jack in their hand, heading towards the vehicle quickly and then started to hit the window. And so I guess at that minute, I sort of felt like ‘Well, I got to help here.’ And so I jumped out of the car and, you know, just did what I could to try and help at the moment,”.
A video of the incident, tweeted by the OPP Wednesday evening, shows smoke billowing from the stopped vehicle as five men attempted to rescue the driver. The OPP says the driver, a 36-year-old man from Toronto, experienced a medical episode during the incident.
The men then jumped into action to help free the unconscious man trying to punch and kick out he windows. They said thankfully there was a guy in a dump truck that threw a hammer out the window which they used to smash the window and rescue the man and within 30 seconds of pulling hime out the vehicle burst into flames.
The OPP says the driver sustained no injuries and is alive today because of the men’s “heroic efforts.”
