When traveling by air, everyone is worried about germs but when it comes to the airport, what surface do you suppose is the yuckiest?  The plastic trays that you put your carry-ons in at security checkpoints have the highest numbers of viruses of anywhere in an airport.

Even more than the toilet research found they’re covered in pathogens that can cause everything from the common cold and flu to pneumonia, bladder infections, SARS and more.  Those trays are thought to carry high numbers of viruses because they are rapidly reused, and they are touched by every single passenger that passes through an airport.  They are rarely disinfected, and their hard surfaces allow viruses to survive for up to a day.  The author of the study says that people can help to minimize contagion by washing their hands hygienically and coughing into a handkerchief, tissue or sleeve.

According to a new study you might be able to live a longer life and avoid diseases that come with old age, including cancer and heart disease, by DRINKING young people’s BLOOD.

And yes, this is real . . . well, at least in theory.  The researchers found that when people over 35 were injected with plasma from teenagers’ blood, there was a real improvement in their biomarkers for diseases.

And in animal tests, older animals’ brains got sharper when they were injected with younger blood.

BUT . . . before you run out and start chompin’ on necks, it’s worth noting that the people behind the study didn’t have people DRINK blood.  That COULD be how we get it into ourselves one day, but for now, a lot more research is needed.

ENTERTAINMENT

Paramount Pictures has pushed back the much-anticipated sequel to “Top Gun” from July 2019 to June 2020.  The reason for the delay?  According to those involved in the project, more time is needed to work out the logistics of producing flight sequences using new technology.  The sequel will be set in a world of drone technology and will explore the end of the era of dog-fighting, with Cruise portraying a flight instructor.  The original was released in 1986.

TODAY’S GOOD NEWS

There’s a high school senior in Biloxi, Mississippi named Kaylee Foster who had a VERY big night on Friday.

First she was crowned homecoming queen before the football team’s homecoming game.  Then she put her pads on and PLAYED in the game.

She’s mainly a soccer player.  But she’s also been the football team’s placekicker since her sophomore year.  And she’s good.

During the game, she made two field goals.  Then it went to overtime . . . and she kicked an extra point to WIN IT.

The final score was 13 to 12.  So with the two field goals, she scored more than half of her team’s points.  And after the game, she posed for a photo wearing her football gear AND her crown.

Someone asked her if she was more nervous for the kick, or the homecoming announcement.  And she said she wasn’t really nervous for either one.

She was pretty sure she WOULDN’T win homecoming queen . . . but she knew she’d make that extra point.

  1. Hurricane Florence is continuing to barrel towards the Carolinas as a powerful Category 4 storm with winds of 140 miles per hour, as residents are being warned that in addition to the danger from the storm surge and winds, Florence is also likely to drop heavy rain for days as it’s expected to stall after making landfall, which is expected late tomorrow (September 13th) or early Friday.

The rainfall concerns it not only for flooding, but for the environmental impact of the drenching waters washing over industrial waste sites and hog farms. North and South Carolina and Virginia have ordered mass evacuations along the coast.
