Over the past two weeks, Police in India have been bursting into suspected illegal call centres, arresting everyone in sight and seizing troves of equipment used to carry out phone fraud aimed at foreigners. Hundreds of Canadians are among the victims of the so-called “CRA scam,” and their combined losses — from just two of the raided offices — are likely to be at least in the hundreds of thousands of dollars.
Police say they arrested 28 people in just one of their sweeps, including two seen as the kingpins of the operation. Most are in their twenties.
They are expected to face fraud-related charges, which could result in jail time.
Dozens of scam centres are believed to still be active in multiple cities across India, each with independent managers and using their own technology to evade detection.
Though the scam itself has existed in India for close to a decade, these sorts of police raids are exceedingly rare. The October arrests mark the first in two years.

Two weeks ago, someone in Kansas City, Missouri stole a GIANT INFLATABLE COLON.
Yes, it’s a 10-foot, 150-pound, pink inflatable replica of the human colon, and it belongs to a nonprofit called the Colon Cancer Coalition out of Minnesota.
They ship it around the country to cancer walks and other events to help get people talking about colon cancer. UPDATE…..
A tip led officers to the inflatable intestine prop at a vacant house. So far there’s no suspect in custody, but they say an investigation would continue.

It’s unclear how much the deals are worth. By the end of their current seasons, the shows will have produced more than 15,000 episodes together. Alex has hosted “Jeopardy!” since 1984, and Sajak and Vanna have been on “Wheel” since 1982.

A BRIEF HISTORY OF DAYLIGHT SAVING TIME:
As of 2 am Sunday, clocks across North America fell back an hour. So why do we do this?
✓ The idea of ‘Daylight Saving Time’ was 1st proposed in 1895 by New Zealand entomologist George Vernon Hudson, and although people were interested, it never caught on.
✓ In 1905, William Willett came up with the same idea in London. Why? He was an avid golfer who hated cutting short his Summer rounds on the links. Again, the idea failed to catch on.
✓ The Germans and their allies were the 1st to implement Daylight Saving Time as a way of conserving coal during WW1. Britain and many other European countries followed the example.
✓ The US adopted DST in 1918, but it wasn’t until 1966 that the whole country observed it. All Canadian provinces were on DST by the 1970s, except parts of Saskatchewan which refuse it.
✓Daylight saving time (DST) isn’t practiced everywhere in the world.
Saskatchewan as well as most of Asia and Africa as well as parts of Australia and South America don’t observe DST at all — nor do Hawaii, Arizona, or many US territories, like Guam and the US Virgin Islands
TODAY’S GOOD NEWS
A guy named Albert Lexie was born with some developmental issues, and worked as a shoeshiner at the Children’s Hospital in Pittsburgh for over 30 years.
He charged $5 per shine, and only made about $10,000 a year. But the amazing part is he never kept ANY of his tips.
He donated every single tip to something called the Free Care Fund, which helps provide medical care to underprivileged kids.
Oprah did a story on him a while back. So did “People” magazine. And Major League Baseball honored him at the 2010 All-Star Game.
Unfortunately, we’re talking about him again now because Albert passed away last week at the age of 76. Which was a big loss for a lot of people who loved him.
But someone tallied up all the donations he made over the years. And in the end, he gave away over $200,000, or more than a third of all the money he made.
The president of the hospital says he’s the “perfect example of how small, incremental acts of kindness can impact millions of people.”

Bus Passenger: Driver Got Lost, Drove in Circles for Hours
A passenger says a Greyhound bus driver on a trip to New York City got lost in Cleveland and drove in circles for several hours before returning to the city’s terminal.
Arin Choo says he and other passengers began asking the driver questions when they noticed they were seeing the same sights over and over again.
Choo says the driver eventually conceded he was lost and returned to the Cleveland bus terminal, where he dropped off two passengers he claimed were disruptive.
Choo says the passengers were just trying to be helpful. “At the end of the day we can use our GPS if he needed it and why he doesn’t have GPS who knows?” a passenger notes.
The bus arrived in New York City 4.5 hours late. A Greyhound spokeswoman tells the AP that the company is looking into the matter.

VERY HIGH TIDE PUTS THREE-QUARTERS OF VENICE UNDER WATER:
Three-quarters of Venice was under water yesterday (October 29th) as the city was flooded by an exceptionally high tide while large parts of Italy were dealing with flooding and heavy winds.
Strong winds raised the water level more than five feet in Venice before receding, topping even the raised walkways that are normally put out in flooded areas in Venice.
The peak level was the highest reached in the Italian city since December 2008.

Here’s How to Keep Your Sleep on Track After Changing the Clocks this Weekend
We turn the clocks back this weekend, which means we get an extra hour of sleep on Saturday night. But the time change can still mess with you and make you feel more tired than usual. Here’s how to prevent that . . .
- Stick to your sleeping pattern. Luckily having the clocks “fall back” is easier on your body than when they “spring forward.” You SHOULD wake up Sunday morning more refreshed since you gained an hour overnight. It’s falling asleep Sunday night that might be trickier.
- Don’t use technology in the bedroom. If falling asleep on Sunday is a struggle, it might be tempting to flip through your phone in bed or watch a few more episodes of something on Netflix.
But the blue light from the screens will just confuse your body even more. So try not to use technology for at least an hour before you want to go to bed . . . and definitely don’t use it BECAUSE you can’t fall asleep.
- Avoid naps. Naps seem like a good idea when your body clock is out of sync, but it can lower the quality of your actual sleep later that night. If you HAVE to nap, make sure it’s short, like 10 to 20 minutes.

- Quarterback Nick Mullenshad an outstanding NFL debut with the San Francisco 49ers last night (November 1st) as he led the team to a 34-3 victory over the Oakland Raiders. Mullens threw for 262 yards and three touchdowns
- “Bohemian Rhapsody” is out this weekend. It’s up against Disney’s new version of “The Nutcracker”, and the Tiffany Haddish comedy “Nobody’s Fool”.
- OPRAH literally went door-to-door in Georgia supporting Stacey Abrams, who’s running for governor. She posted video of herself surprising one resident. Oprah also gave a 17-minute speech at a rally, and made another appearance where she chanted “You get a vote! You get a vote!”
- The Duke Energy Building in Charlotte, North Carolina was evacuated yesterday morning after someone inside found a, quote, “small manila envelope handwritten and addressed from out-of-state,” according to the police report.
The entire block was cleared out and the bomb squad came in.
But fortunately, it wasn’t a bomb. No, it was . . . a JOURNEY cassette tape. I suppose that IS a suspicious package, but suspicious because, you know, why is someone mailing a Journey cassette in 2018? There’s no word which Journey album it was, or why someone sent it.
- Would you like to own a jail?
The province of Ontario says they will accept the “best offer” after putting a historic jail in Windsorup for sale at just $1.
The 33,000-square-foot lockup likely won’t sell for so little. Offers are being accepted until Nov. 23 when Infrastructure Ontario says they will review the bids.
Originally constructed in 1796 and rebuilt in 1925 after a fire, the jail is in Windsor’s “Old Sandwich Town.” And some local historians would love to see it turned into a museum.
There have also been talks of the space being converted into a homeless shelter.
