There was a time not so long ago when cash was king, and people literally carried some at all times. These days you can pay for a lot more things with credit and debit cards, but there are still times when one might need cash. So how much cash should an adult carry on them at any given time these days? Opinions on that vary. A survey found 42 percent of people carry no more than $40 in cash, and 30 percent carry between $41 and $99. But an aggregation of data from various sources finds popular opinion says carrying $200 is just the right amount because it is enough to handle a standard emergency, and it’s likely enough to cover your bill at a restaurant if your credit card gets declined or if they don’t accept plastic.

A company just analyzed what having a phone is going to cost you in your lifetime.  And the answer is . . . more than $75,000.

Here’s the breakdown:

The phones, buying one every two or three years for 60 years:  An average of $567 per phone, for a total of $12,474.

Your monthly bill for the next 60 years:  $960 per year, for a total of $57,600.

Apps and accessories:  $88 per year, for a total of $5,280.

Now . . . this study assumes that we’ll still be using phones in the year 2078, and not just sending telepathic messages or whatever.  But it also uses today’s prices, so it’s not banking on inflation or general price increases.

ENTERTAINMENT

In an interview, Mark Wahlberg said his kids are embarrassed by his ‘Marky Mark’ past . . . as, you know, they probably should be. He said that he was at his son’s football game last week, and they started playing “Good Vibrations” in the stadium, and his son was, quote, “burying his head in his helmet.”

Even though Andrew Lincoln made his last appearance on “The Walking Dead” on Sunday, don’t put a fork in the show just yet.  AMC has signed new deals with stars Norman Reedus and Melissa McBride for the next three seasons.  The actors, who have played fan-favorite characters Daryl and Carol since the first season, will receive significant pay increases, and could potentially move from one Walking Dead property to another, as Lennie James did when he left the main series and joined “Fear the Walking Dead”.

TODAY IS……………….

“International Merlot Day”, saluting the wine made from the most widely-planted grape in France, which also grows well in Argentina, Australia, California, and Switzerland. Hmm, how should we celebrate?

  • “Little League Girls Day”, in honor of New Jersey’s brave foray in equal opportunity sports in 1973, when that state became the first to allow girls to play Little League baseball.

  • “National Eating Healthy Day”, is a great time to try some new habits that just may stick.

TODAY’S GOOD NEWS

There’s a guy named John Chhan who owns a donut shop in Seal Beach, California.  He and his wife Stella have been working together at the shop every morning since they came to the country as refugees from Cambodia almost 40 years ago.

But some of his regular customers recently noticed Stella wasn’t there.  John told them she’d had an aneurysm, so he was working at the store every day and then rushing home to be with her at night.

His regulars wanted to set up a GoFundMe, but he said no.  So they came up with an even better plan to help him:  Buying up all of his inventory every day.

John’s policy has always been to stay open until he sells out.  So now that everyone’s buying up his donuts early in the morning, he can spend as much of the day as possible with Stella.

And, fortunately, he says she’s improving.  Quote, “She can talk, she can write.  Right now she’s trying to start eat[ing].”

Some Idiot Climbs a $200,000 Sculpture, Until It Snaps

A video is making the rounds of some idiot at a New Zealand waterfront, who got bored and broke a $200,000 art sculpture.

He’s climbing the length of its structure, when the metal pole bends until it snaps at its base and the guy falls into the water.

The pole hits his head on the way down, but he’s fine. No word on what kind of punishment he’s facing.

Someone Put Googly Eyes on a Revolutionary War Hero Statue . . .

Someone pulled a prank in Savannah, Georgia . . . they stuck two GOOGLY EYES on a statue of Nathanael Greene.  He’s a hero from the Revolutionary War.

Unfortunately for whoever did it, the city REALLY doesn’t think it’s funny.

They posted on Facebook, quote, “It may look funny, but harming our historic monuments and

public property is no laughing matter, in fact, it’s a crime.”

And it could be a SERIOUS crime.  If somehow the googly eyes do more than $500 in damage, the person who did it could be charged with a felony, criminal damage to property.

ONE IN EIGHT DRIVERS ADMITS TO FALLING ASLEEP AT THE WHEEL (11/05/2018)

Drinking and driving is extremely dangerous, but so is driving while you’re exhausted.

A study published in the UK by the Parliamentary Advisory Council for Transport Safety estimated that up to a quarter of fatal accidents are caused by drivers falling asleep behind the wheel. Now a more recent survey of over 20,500 UK drivers finds 13 percent said they have fallen asleep while driving at one point or another.

Men were three times as likely as women to say they’ve fallen asleep behind the wheel (17% compared to 5%.) The most common reasons people gave for falling asleep while driving: having a long, hard day at work (39%), the monotony of the journey (33%), and late night driving (27%.)

Experts warn that the only real cure for sleepy driving is stopping and sleeping, not rolling down the window, or having caffeine.

  1. When the first typewriter was created in 1868, the creators saved money by not including keys for a zero or a one . . . they figured people could just use “O” and “I.”

  1. Some species of caterpillars have evolved to look like bird poop, so if a bird spots them, they won’t get eaten.

ANOTHER REASON TO HATE BAD WEATHER:
Swedish researchers have found that when the weather is bad, more people have heart attacks.

Scientists report that lower temperature, higher wind speeds and less sunshine are all associated with a greater incidence of heart attack.  The link was most closely associated with temperature.

A temperature decrease from 20 degrees Celsius (68F) to -1 (30F) degrees was associated with a 14 percent increased heart attack risk. Wind speed increases from 0 to 58 kph (36mph) resulted in a 7 percent increase in risk.

And when the hours of sunshine without clouds decreased from 10 hours a day to none, heart attack risk went up by 11 percent.

The authors of the study say that changes in physical activity and diet in colder weather may affect heart health. And depression, which can be caused by reduced hours of sunshine, also increases cardiac risk.

They also note that the fact that flu season coincides with colder weather could also be a factor.
