Scientists claim that they have created lab-grown chicken nuggets, and they could be on store shelves before the end of the year.  San Francisco-based “JustMeat” has announced that they have a new line of products ready to go that includes chicken, beef, pork and seafood which, rather than being made from animals, are grown in a lab using cells from live animals.  They say, for example, to initially get the chicken cells needed to create their lab-grown nuggets, they only needed one feather from the ‘best chicken’ they could find.  In the lab, scientists then selected a single cell, which they grew into ‘chicken’ using nutrients obtained from plants.  The company says their product can be grown antibiotic free, and with significant reductions in land use, water use, greenhouse gas emissions, and energy use.

According to researchers from Harvard University a mysterious cigar-shaped object seen tumbling through the solar system last year, may have been an alien spacecraft sent to investigate Earth.

First spotted in October 2017, the strange, fast-moving object has puzzled astronomers since its discovery. Given the name “Oumuamua” – which means messenger from afar arriving first, or scout, – the object is believed to be the first interstellar visitor to our solar system.

The estimated 400-meter-long object sped through our inner solar system at a speed of more than 26 kilometers per second before departing in January 2018.

Although it’s been called a comet or an asteroid in the past, it’s still unclear exactly what the elongated, red-tinged object is and where it came from.

The researchers said its likely origin will only be determined by searching for other objects like it in the future.

ENTERTAINMENT

STAN LEE died yesterday at 95.  He launched Marvel Comics back in 1961, and was one of the creators of the superheroes Spider-ManBlack PantherThe Incredible HulkX-MenIron Man, and The Avengers.

Stan revolutionized comics by creating superheroes that had human flaws and mundane problems that adult readers could relate to.  The “superheroes” before that were typically flawless, god-like figures.

After Stan retired as a comic writer, he remained at Marvel as an editor and publisher, and throughout the ’80s and ’90s he became a cult figure in the comic book world.

Hugh Jackman was on Colbert last night, and told a story about being on the red carpet.  Even though he was Wolverine with the fans, everyone was focused on the man who started it all, Stan Lee.

CIGARETTE SMOKING IN THE U.S. REACHES ALL-TIME LOW (11/09/2018)

Cigarette smoking in the U.S. has reached an all time low.

New date from the U.S. government shows that just 14% of adults overall smoke cigarettes. In 2017, an estimated 34 million adults in the U.S. smoked cigarettes either every day which is down from 15.5% in 2016 and 67% fewer than back in 1965.

The most dramatic cigarette usage decline was among adults 18 to 24 years — 10.4% percent in 2017 compared with 13% in 2016.

Meanwhile, another recent study had bad news for smokers: it takes cigarette smokers’ hearts at least 15 year to recover after quitting cigarettes.

THE ONE THING YOU CAN DO DAILY TO LOSE WEIGHT (11/08/2018)

A new study has found that actually stepping on a scale everyday can help you lose weight!

They concluded those who never weighed themselves or only did so once a week “did not lose weight in the following year.” But those who stepped on the scale six or seven days a week “had significant weight loss,” shedding roughly 1.7 percent of their body weight. On their findings, the study’s authors said, “Monitoring your behavior or body weight may increase your awareness of how changing behaviors can affect weight loss. These findings support the central role of self-monitoring in changing behavior and increasing success in any attempt to better manage weight.”

That being said, stepping on the scale may not be for everyone.

One health expert says some experience an emotional connection to that number that can trigger a great deal of anxiety, and even depression, or other unhealthy patterns, like under-eating and rebound binge eating.”
