I’m not sure I needed science to tell me this, but they did it anyway:  When it’s COLD outside, it makes us want to drink.  And a new study out of the University of Pittsburgh is actually the first one to confirm it.

The researchers found a direct connection between the weather in a city and the average alcohol intake.  And it makes sense:  When you get drunk, the alcohol increases the blood flow to your skin, which warms you up.

But, of course, be careful:  They also found that people in cold weather climates were more likely to have liver disease . . . and that’s also directly connected to alcohol.

A dead whale that washed ashore in eastern Indonesia and researchers found about 5.9 kilograms (13 pounds) of plastic waste in the animal’s stomach containing 115 plastic cups, four plastic bottles, 25 plastic bags, 2 flip-flops, a nylon sack and more than 1,000 other assorted pieces of plastic.

They said it was not possible to determine if the plastic had caused the whale’s death because of the animal’s advanced state of decay.

Indonesia is the world’s second-largest plastic polluter after China. It produces 3.2 million tons of mismanaged plastic waste a year, of which 1.29 million tons ends up in the ocean, the study said.

The government is making efforts to reduce the use of plastic, including urging shops not to provide plastic bags for customers and teaching about the problem in schools nationwide to meet a government target of reducing plastic use by 70 per cent by 2025.

RANDOM REPORT

  1. It’s easier to detect art forgeries now because of the nuclear bombs in World War Two.  They contained two isotopes that didn’t exist in nature before, so if the paint contains any trace amount of them, it means the painting was made after 1945.

  1. There are several colleges in the U.S. where you’re required to pass a SWIMMING TEST to graduate, including three Ivy League schools:  Cornell, Columbia, Dartmouth, MIT, Bryn Mawr, and Swarthmore.

  1. The longest serving mayor in the U.S. is Charles Long of Booneville, Kentucky . . . he’s 98 years old and he’s been mayor for 60 years.

  1. The fastest animal in the world is the peregrine falcon, which flies at 242 miles per hour.  The cheetah is the fastest land animal, at about 75 miles per hour, but only the ninth fastest overall.

TODAY’S GOOD NEWS

Every year for over three decades, a vacuum cleaner repairman near Boston named Scott Macaulay has thrown a Thanksgiving dinner for random strangers.

He gets between 60 and 100 guests each year so he moved it to the basement of a local church.  It’s an eclectic crowd, from college students to people who are new to the country, to those who have recently lost spouses.

He has made dozens of scrapbooks documenting everyone he’s met over the years.

“There’s pencils because they are going to write down everything they’re thankful for because that changes the outlook, from whatever reason they’re coming to the dinner to a positive outlook because you start concentrating on what you’re thankful for,” he said.

While he already has a head count for this week’s holiday meal, he said he would never turn anyone away.

Here he is talking about why he started doing it, and what it’s all about.

At this point, smartphone addiction is a pretty well understood phenomenon, even if we sometimes feel powerless to do much about it.

Such that the biggest tech companies are now starting to make noise about various digital wellness initiatives meant to break us of these habits, at least a bit, a new survey found that people are now checking their smartphones on average of 52 looks a day.

THINGS NOT TO BUY ON BLACK FRIDAY:
➠Toys:  Wait until closer to the holidays. Toys typically get lower and lower in price as the days count down to Christmas.

➠Christmas decorations:  Chances are the price will drop dramatically by the New Year. Hold on until January and you’ll have the most festive yard on the block for next Christmas.

➠ Clothing:  While you may see some tempting deals, taking time to search for your size and try on clothes can eat up precious shopping time. Cyber Monday is the better day to get deals on clothing.

➠ Bedding:  Black Friday is not the time to buy new sheets, comforters or really anything for your bed. Retailers begin “white sales” in January, where discounts can go as high as 70 percent off.

➠ Anything you don’t actually need:  It may seem like common sense, but it’s easy to get caught up in all the deals. Use Black Friday as a time to stretch your dollar, not break your bank.

“CBS Sunday Morning” interviewed a writer who ate nothing but cereal for a week, then did some trivia about breakfast cereal.

Can you name the first breakfast cereal company?  Who’s up in sales . . . eggs or cereal?  How much does breakfast cereal make each year?  What shape doubled one cereal’s revenue?  What’s the number-one selling cereal?

The answers:  Kellogg’s was first.  Eggs are up, cereal is down in sales by $1 billion, but still takes in $8 billion.  The addition of a unicorn-shaped marshmallow doubled the sales of Lucky Charms.  And the number one selling cereal is Honey Nut Cheerios.

TRY THIS AT HOME:
Here is exactly what you want to hear after sleep-walking your way through a Wednesday morning, looking ahead to another long work day, and then thinking about trying to fit in some exercise in the evening:

Lying in a hot bath burns as many calories as a 30-minute walk.  That’s the word from a study of men who either did 60 minutes of moderate cycling or bathed in 104°F water.

Both forced the body to use more energy than when at rest, and those who bathed burned 79% more calories than they would have just sitting on the couch.

Yes, those who rode a bike for 60 minutes burned even more calories (to the tune of almost 750%), but researchers point out that bathing can be something of an alternative to people who face a lot of fatigue, stress, or muscle pain and find it difficult to exercise daily.

  1. The Public Health Agency of Canada is asking residents in Ontario to avoid eating romaine lettuce due to an ongoing E. coli outbreak.

The government health agency said exposure to romaine lettuce has been identified as a source of the outbreak, but the cause of contamination has not been identified.  However, health officials believe the incident is related to illnesses reported in a previous E. coli outbreak from December 2017, which suggests there may be a reoccurring source of contamination.

As of November 20, 2018, there have been 18 confirmed cases of E. coli illness investigated — three in Ontario and 15 in Quebec — all of whom ranged in age from five to 93.
