Turns out, drinking cups of coffee may actually be good for you! A new study has found that people who excessively drink coffee — six to eight cups a day, are less likely to die than those who don’t drink coffee.  The study looked at 500,000 people in the UK throughout three decades. People who drank two to five cups of coffee per day were 12% less likely to die over the 10-year period. The study also found that those who drank six to eight cups a day were 16% less likely to die early and those who drank eight or more were 14% less likely to die early. It didn’t matter if the coffee was caffeinated or decaf.

Remember a month weeks ago when there was ONE winning ticket for the $1.5 BILLION Mega Millions jackpot?

Well whoever bought that ticket in Simpsonville, South Carolina still hasn’t come forward to claim the prize.

And they only have 180 days to do it . . . so clock’s ticking.

If the person never claims it, all of the states that kick in for the Mega Millions jackpot get their money back, and they can use the money however they want.  They can put it back toward the lottery, or use it for something lame like education or taxes.

Why hasn’t the person claimed the prize yet?  You might think it’s because they’re not ready for their life to change . . . but South Carolina is one of the few states where winners can choose to stay anonymous.

TODAY IS……………….

  • “Black Friday”, the day after US Thanksgiving that’s touted as the biggest single shopping day of the year in America, although that’s statistically untrue. The ‘black’ refers to retailers finally turning a profit after spending much of the year ‘in the red’.

  • “Espresso Day”, a good excuse to have a wake-me-up shot this morning.  Luigi Bezzera invented the espresso coffee machine in Italy in 1901.  His objective was to decrease his employees’ coffee break time and increase their productivity.  The small cup in which an espresso is served is called a demitasse.

SUNDAY-
• “Grey Cup” (CHECK LOCAL LISTINGS): Ottawa Redblacks vs. Calgary Stampeders in the 106th Grey Cup from Commonwealth Stadium in Edmonton.

RANDOM REPORT

1   A study found that second-born children are more likely to be troublemakers.

2   Research indicates that putting food in your mouth with your non-dominant hand can cut down on how much you eat by approximately 30 percent.

3   When chili peppers were introduced to Japan in the 16th century, they were not eaten—they were inserted into socks to keep the toes warm.

4   Toilet paper couldn’t be advertised as “splinter free” until the 1930s, when production techniques improved.

TODAY’S GOOD NEWS

There’s a 73-year-old guy in England named Deke Duncan who’s always wanted to be a radio DJ.  So way back in 1974, he set up his own studio in a shed in his backyard.

He was never affiliated with an actual radio station though.  So for 44 years, he’s been doing his own show . . . and broadcasting to an audience of ONE.

He plays it through a set of speakers in his living room.  And his wife Teresa is the only one who ever hears his show.

Back in the mid-70s, the BBC did a story on him.  And someone recently tracked down some of the footage.  Back then, they billed him as the radio host with the smallest audience in England.

Anyway, he’s been doing it as a hobby ever since, but still always dreamed of being on the actual radio.

And now it’s going to happen.  A BBC affiliate that reaches over 125,000 people a week is giving him his own one-hour Christmas special next month.  They surprised him with the news during a live interview on Sunday.

Dad Is Accused of Dressing Up Like a Ref to Help His Son’s Team

There’s a guy named Richard Mercado whose son plays football for Nazareth Academy, which is in the west suburbs of Chicago.  And earlier this month, they were in a playoff game against a school called Simeon Career Academy.

Well . . . Richard was on the sidelines with Nazareth, which is strange, because parents aren’t usually allowed there.  And he was dressed up like a REF, because he DOES work as a ref, although obviously not for this game.

But, apparently, he weighed in on a few of the tough calls the real refs were making.  And, of course, those all went for Nazareth, who ended up winning the game.

So now, some parents from Simeon are SUING.  They’re calling for Richard and the other refs from the game to lose their jobs, and for Nazareth to be stripped of the win.

Richard is denying that he swayed any of the calls . . . although he DID write on Facebook after the game that, quote, “I made sure the best team won.”

SHOPPING DYNASTY:
With many of us warming up the credit cards for Black Friday and others holding out for Cyber Monday, here’s a heartwarming story about a “consumer holiday” …

The Chinese internet retailer Alibaba made $31 BILLION in one day after making up a shopping holiday.  “Singles Day” was started by college students in the 1990s as a version of Valentines Day on Nov 11, honoring all those who’ve yet to wed.

Alibaba, spotting an opportunity, helped develop it into a major shopping day for singles to woo that special someone.

How major? On Singles Day in 2017, Alibaba brought in more money than the total online sales in the United States from both Black Friday and Cyber

Monday…COMBINED.  This year, Singles Day did more than $1 billion in sales in just one minute and 25 seconds, on the way to that $31 billion total for the day.

Proven Ways to Deal with Picky Eater Kids

Here’s something for parents of picky eaters.  A recent study looked at different strategies we use to get our kids to eat stuff they don’t like . . . a.k.a., vegetables.  And it found one strategy in particular that DOESN’T work . . .

Offering them a REWARD for eating something they don’t like isn’t a great strategy.  And it probably won’t get them to change their eating habits long-term.

They might eat their broccoli JUST to get chocolate for dessert.  But long-term, it could simply reinforce the idea that broccoli is bad, and chocolate is good.

Here are five strategies that tend to work better, according to the study . . .

  1. Repeated exposure to the food they don’t like.  Meaning you keep serving it to them, and push them to eat it until they get used to the taste.

  1. Setting a good example by eating the food yourself, and showing them you like it.

  1. Preparing meals together and teaching them how to cook.

  1. Hiding the taste with other flavors, like putting butter or cheese on vegetables.  It’s not the healthiest option, but veggies with cheese are better than no veggies at all.

  1. Making the food look more interesting by doing things with it, like arranging vegetables in the shape of a face.  Obviously that one’s meant for 3 and 4-year-olds, not 14-year-olds.

  1. Apparently birth control is no match against nature. The San Diego Zoo says the birth of a siamang ape came as a big surprise to zookeepers since the mother was on birth control. The zoo says 37-year-old Eloise, a type of gibbon, was on chemical contraception for several years after having six babies with her mate, Unkie. This surprise baby was the first siamang born at the zoo in more than 12 years. Animal care manager Jill Andrews told the San Diego Union-Tribune, “We’re not certain why birth control didn’t work in this case, but as with humans, it is not uncommon for contraceptive failure to happen from time to time. Still, we are overjoyed– because any birth of an endangered species is a reason to celebrate.”

  1. A 78-year-old guy in North Carolina got attacked by a bear in his front yard last Tuesday, but survived by punching it in the nose.  It was a mama bear wth two cubs, and it bit him on the hip and knocked him back eight feet.  But he still lived to tell the tale.

Trisha Yearwood Says Garth Brooks is the Perfect Husband

TRISHA YEARWOOD and GARTH BROOKS will celebrate 13 years of marriage next month, and it looks like the secret to their happiness is brewed one cup at a time.

Quote, “My husband doesn’t drink coffee, but he gets up every morning and makes my coffee.  And it’s the best.

“[If] I have to get up early like I’m filming my cooking show right now, so I’m getting up at six o’clock in the morning.  He doesn’t have to get up at six o’clock but he gets up and makes my coffee.”

It probably helps that they enjoy each other’s company.  Quote, “We’re kind of that sappy couple.  [He’s] really a gentleman so he’s very thoughtful about all the little things.  I’d love to have a complaint about him but he’s really perfect.”

On an unrelated note, Trisha just recorded an album of her favorite Frank Sinatra songs.  It’s called “Let’s Be Frank”, and it’ll be available December 20th exclusively at Williams-Sonoma . . . and then everywhere else in February.

Garth Brooks Says Artists Who Change When They Get Famous, Are Just Revealing Who They Are

CMT.com talked to GARTH BROOKS before his Notre Dame concert.  They asked how he’s feeling after 33 years as an entertainer.

He said, quote, “I think George Strait said it best in ‘Troubadour’:  ‘I still feel 25.’  I do.  He added, quote, “Time changes, but you don’t.  Nobody really changes.  When you see someone who has changed since becoming an artist, they might just be revealing who they really are.  Because nobody changes.”

The concert was filmed for a TV special.  It’s called “Garth: Live at Notre Dame!” and it airs December 2nd on CBS.
