Marine mammal veterinarian Claire Simeone was at lunch when she got a call from the hospital where she works.  There was silence on the other end. Nine more silent calls followed. Fearing an emergency, she rushed back.  After it was determined that it was a false alarm, she found out that others were receiving similar phantom calls.  By the hundreds.  From the same hospital phone line.  A phone company rep tried to talk her through finding a possible line on the fritz. She walked into a lab and found the culprit. A gecko was perched on a phone, making calls to everyone in the recent call history with “HIS TINY GECKO FEET,” as she wrote in a Twitter thread the next day.

If you can’t hit the lotto maybe this can happen the next time you take money out of an ATM. An ATM in Houston started spitting out $100 bills instead of tens on Sunday night.  Someone posted about it on social media, and people started lining up on foot and in their cars. Police said fights broke out at the ATM before deputies arrived to calm the scene and stop customers from exploiting the apparent glitch.  It’s illegal to take money when an ATM does it wrong, but Bank of America says everyone can KEEP the cash.  Turns out a tech put the hundred dollar bills in where the tens should go.  No word on how much the bank lost.

TODAY’S GOOD NEWS

When a school bus driver allegedly hit a parked vehicle in Buffalo, a sixth-grade student took the initiative to do the right thing — leave a note.

That’s according to a viral tweet posted by Andrew Sipowicz, who credits the actions of the child with saving him thousands of dollars. The company that operates the school bus has since confirmed the incident and commended the anonymous student’s response.

Sipowicz, a senior at Buffalo’s Canisius College, had parked his car along a street; when he returned, he found that the car had been damaged. But it was only when Sipowicz saw a note left on the Mustang that the details became clear.  The note was left by a 6th grader and said in part….

“She hit and run … I saw what happened,” it said, before continuing a bullet-point list:

– Sorry    – Driver seat left door   – a lady in the bus driver seat 449

He used the information to contact the company that operates the school bus. A supervisor responded to the scene and the company said in a statement that it will cover the cost of the repair and a rental through its insurance process.

Sipowicz’s tweet thanking the student has received more than 800,000 interactions on Twitter. In a followup tweet, Sipowicz said that the student has been identified and “we’re in the process of finding a way to reward her for her actions.”

THE GROSS TRUTH ABOUT WEARING FOOTWEAR IN THE HOUSE

If you don’t make it a habit to remove your shoes upon entering your home, you might after hearing this.

According to one study, more than 26 percent of shoes worn inside the home are contaminated with Colistidium difficile (C.diff), a bacterium that can cause stomach pain and explosive diarrhea.

One Doctor saying “So many germs and bacteria can be brought in from your shoes, including toxins and E. coli.” And that these types of statistics are particularly concerning if you have a young child or elderly relative living with you, as their immune systems are weaker.

So what’s your best bet?  Vacuum and clean the carpet at least once per week, and air out your home, as the air quality is usually worse inside your home than it is outside.

GOOD POINT:
It’s never a good thing when Friday rolls around and you still haven’t tackled that big project that has been sitting on your plate since the start of the work week.

Nicholas Sonnenberg, co-founder of the task outsourcing platform “Leverage” says that you can boost your productivity and give yourself a bit of a break on Fridays by scheduling your week using the “Arrow” method.

What you do is this:  Front-load your week with work. And that’s it! With the Arrow method, you organize your week in the shape of an arrowhead, so you start off your week by doing the most work on Monday, then schedule your duties so they gradually taper down to the end of the week.

By Friday, you’ll only have a few easy tasks left to do, rather than that big elephant of a job you’ve been putting off since Monday morning. And if you don’t get to everything early on? Easy — you’ve got time on Friday.

Sonnenberg says that not only does the Arrow method boost your weekly productivity, but it also gives your schedule some flexibility toward the end of the week, and gives you the psychological satisfaction and peace of mind of crossing items off your to-do list as you go.

  1. NASA’s InSight spacecraft landed on Mars yesterday, after traveling 300 million miles.  It’s there to drill into the surface, find out what’s below, and figure out if Mars ever supported life.  Here’s the moment it it touched down, when all the NASA engineers still  weren’t sure if it would crash or not.  We love the lady in the background laughing like a maniac.

  1. The Boston Red Soxdidn’t just end up with a World Series trophy, they’re also getting HUGE holiday bonuses for their efforts.  The team is splitting a postseason bonus pool of $31.7 million, with each player getting $416,838.

Every team that made the playoffs gets a cut based on how far they go.

The World Series runner-up L.A. Dodgers each got shares of more than $262,027.

Players aren’t the only employees who can get a piece.  Each team votes before the postseason starts on how to distribute the money.  Whole or partial shares can go to players, coaches, training staff, and anyone else.

  1. “House Hunters: Home for the Holidays” (HGTV): Series premiere: An Olympic gold medalist and his family search for a home outside of Seattle, where they can wake up in their owns beds on Christmas morning instead of traveling.
“Rudolph the Red-Nosed Reindeer” (CBS): The classic animated 1964 Christmas tale narrated by Burl Ives.

  1. According to a new study, TODAY is the loneliest day of the year.

And the three main reasons are:  It’s dark outside . . . the weather is awful . . . and people are struggling to budget for Christmas.

How often do you check in with your loved ones? The British Red Cross polled 4,000 British adults and found 53 percent of those who said they were lonely said they worried no one would be there to support them if something bad happened to them. And about 11 percent said they felt like they didn’t have anyone in their lives who they could rely on in a crisis.

Keith Urban Once Failed Music Class

The CMA Foundation has been recruiting country stars to share stories about their music education and the teachers who made a difference to them.  It’s part of their “Starts With M.E.” campaign.

KEITH URBAN’s story started early.  He picked up a guitar at the age of six and pretty much never set it down again.  He was fortunate to have a lot of great teachers, but there was one who really stood out.

Quote, “Her name was Mrs. Grimmer, my music teacher in 8th, 9th, and 10th grade.  I failed music as a subject because I couldn’t read and had no [music] theory, but she knew I was naturally talented so she rewrote this whole test that we were supposed to take.”

The new exam was more about “playing” and less about “theory.”  It veered away from the school’s curriculum but it played into Keith’s strengths.  At the end of the year the school officials didn’t approved of the changes and the entire class failed.

He says, quote, “She was so distraught.  But that meant the world to me that she would want to recognize our natural talents like that.”
