WEDNESDAY JANUARY 9TH                          –                                   WHAT’S HAPPENING

A woman was jogging at a park in Oakland, California last week when, out of nowhere, a dog ran up and tried to attack her.  The woman whipped out her pepper spray and used it to protect herself from the dog.

Well . . . that was NOT cool with the 19-year-old woman named Alma who owned the dog.  So she ran up, and punched, kicked, and BIT the jogger.

That’s right . . . the woman jogging got attacked by a dog, but the only bite mark she wound up with came from a human.

Alma was arrested, the jogger is recovering.

Apparently, one of the hottest new fitness trends is . . . chugging a gallon of whole milk every day.  It’s called the GOMAD Diet, which stands for Gallon Of Milk A Day.

And obviously it’s not to lose weight . . . it’s for people looking to pack on muscle by powering down an extra 2,400 calories a day to supplement their hashtag sick gains.  But there are three MAJOR problems . . .

  1. Studies have found a connection between high levels of calcium and prostate cancer.  Plus when you drink that much whole milk, you could be too full to eat other foods that have the vitamins and nutrients you need.
  2. And one big side effect of pounding that much milk is . . . horrible FLATULENCE.

ENTERTAINMENT

Sunday night’s Golden Globes produced an unlikely hero. The awards may be given by the Hollywood Foreign Press Association, but it was Canadian Model Kelleth Cuthbert, dubbed “Fiji Water Girl”, who won the people’s hearts. Posing daringly close to some of Hollywood’s biggest stars, Cuthbert successfully photobombed dozens of red-carpet photos, always with a wry look on her face.

Before long, Fiji Water Girl had her own parody Twitter account and the adoration of the Internet. And Fiji, the official bottled water partner of the Golden Globes, didn’t mind the attention either.

If You Can Make the Kick Cody Parkey Missed, You Can Get a Year of Free Beer

It’s easy to sit on your couch and mock an athlete like Chicago Bears kicker CODY PARKEY, who wasn’t able to hit a last minute, 43-yard field goal to beat the Philadelphia Eagles.

So, Chicago’s Goose Island brewery wants you to put your money where your mouth is, with a new challenge.

They’re building a goal post outside their building, and this Saturday, fans can show up and try to make that 43-yarder.  Oh, and in addition to bragging rights, you can also win a FREE CASE OF BEER EVERY WEEK FOR A YEAR!

They TWEETED, quote, “A lot of armchair kickers are saying that they could hit that field goal, which we find DOUBTFUL.  You’re gonna sit there on your throne of potato chips and vape pens and criticize this dude’s athleticism?  GET REAL.”

According to a list of rules they Tweeted out, you have to show up at noon to sign up, and spots will be limited.  You get one try, and, quote, “All Goose Island referee calls are final.”

There’s no word how many people will get to kick, but anyone who makes it gets the free beer deal.  There’s also no word if employees are allowed to ‘ice’ the kickers . . . or if the kicks PARTIALLY BLOCKED, which would more accurately reflect Cody’s situation.

TODAY’S GOOD NEWS

Three inmates in North Carolina were picking up trash on the side of the road last Wednesday, when the guard who was watching them passed out.

But instead of running off, they all opted to help him, and probably saved his life.

The guard’s name is James Smith.  He looks like he’s in his 60s.  And it turned out he had a stroke.

At first, they thought he just fell over, but when they went to help him up he had trouble answering questions.  So they grabbed his phone and called 911.

Paramedics got him to a hospital, and he’s still recovering but should be okay.  All three inmates got an award for it, which could help them land a job once they get out.

One of them is a guy named Roy Smith, who says he thinks of James as a friend, not just a cop.

And he never even considered running off, because quote, “If that was my father lying beside the road, I would want somebody to help him.”

STUDY: THE POSTURE WE TAKE WHILE USING COMPUTERS GIVES US NECK PROBLEMS

Most people use computers every day, but it turns out the posture we take while doing so is causing neck issues.

Researchers asked students to sit upright with their heads properly aligned on their necks and asked them to turn their heads. Then they had the students “scrunch” their necks and jut their heads forward. Ninety-two percent reported being able to turn their heads much farther when not scrunching up their neck.

Also, in a second test, 98 percent reported some level of pain in their head, neck, or eyes after scrunching their necks for 30 seconds. Often, when staring at a computer screen, people jut their head forward to look more closely at the screen.

Study leader Erik Peper explains, “When your posture is tall and erect, the muscles of your back can easily support the weight of your head and neck .  But when your head juts forward at a 45 degree angle, your neck acts like a fulcrum, like a long lever lifting a heavy object. Now the muscle weight of your head and neck is the equivalent of about 45 pounds. It is not surprising people get stiff necks and shoulder and back pain.”

  1. Apparently, more people will die THIS WEEK than any other week of the year.

A study found that during the second week of January about 40% more people die than other weeks of the year.

And the main reasons are the cold weather . . . and a lot of illnesses going around.

On the bright side, I guess that means as long as you can survive this week, you’re good?

  1. The Dungan family in Salinas, California was out of town this past weekend, but when they reviewed the security camera outside their front door, they saw something STRANGE went down early on Saturday.

A guy spent three hours standing there . . . LICKING their DOORBELL.

They turned the video over to the Police, and they identified the guy. He also stole some extension cords off the porch, so the cops are trying to track him down on prowling and theft charges.

Brett Eldredge Is Going Back to His Flip-Phone . . . How Long Will He Last?

BRETT ELDREDGE hit up social media last week to issue a “Flip-Phone Challenge.”  You already know where this is going.  He’s switching from a smart phone to a flip-phone . . . because he wants to “stay in the moment.”

He wrote that he’s going to go back in time to 2002 when he got his first color flip-phone.  Quote, “I would carry it everywhere I went but never look at it to check the never ending ‘Breaking News’ or constantly compare my life to someone else’s.”

He was tired of being at dinner with friends and finding himself “halfway paying attention” to conversations.  Instead of talking and listening he’s on his phone watching videos of people chug a bottle of vodka or do a triple backflip into a pool.

Quote, “Don’t get me wrong, there is a lot of amazing things about a smart phone, but I gotta take a moment to experiment and see what it’s like to be here, RIGHT NOW, lost in the music and not in a screen.”
