A Guelph couple has welcomed home a lost pet dog after it disappeared on Christmas Eve. The dog, named Logan, ran away December 24th while out with its owners near Sault Ste. Marie. After ten days of searching they returned to Guelph.

But last week, Logan’s owners received a call from the U-S Coast Guard, saying they spotted the dog as they were breaking up ice on the St. Mary’s River that separates Ontario from Michigan.

The coast guard found a phone number on the dog’s collar and contacted the owners who made the trip back to Sault Ste. Marie to bring Logan home. The dog’s owners say his paws were a bit sore, but after the trip to the vet, he is doing well.

A Detroit-area cat known for her wandering habits went missing for two months before turning up again, but in Florida. Judy Sanborn of Detroit said her family’s two-and-a-half-year-old cat, Bandit, went missing back in October.

Then she got a phone call in mid-December from a pet hospital in Tampa. Workers there said a woman dropped off Bandit saying the animal was a stray that followed her home. Workers found Bandit had a microchip and so contacted the animal’s owner. Bandit is expected to make the trip home this week thanks to a pilot who agreed to give the cat a lift.

For the First Time, a Woman Will Officiate an NFL Playoff Game

This weekend, Sarah Thomas will become the first woman to officiate an NFL playoff game.  She’s on the crew that’s working Sunday’s divisional game between the L.A. Chargers and the New England Patriots.

Of course, Sarah isn’t new.  The NFL hired her back in 2015.  She was the league’s first full-time female official . . . and before that she was the first woman to officiate a major college football game.

She’s the ‘Down Judge,’ which is just under the Head Referee and Umpire.  Down judges manage the chains, set the line of scrimmage, mark the spot where the play ends, and make line-of-scrimmage calls like false starts and offsides.

Sarah was just promoted to Down Judge last season.  She previously served as a ‘Line Judge.’

Interesting Fact:  The Down Judge was previously called the Head Linesman.  The NFL’s officiating director say it was changed in 2017 to be gender neutral . . . but it wasn’t directly because of Sarah.  He said they’d decided on making the change BEFORE she was promoted.

TODAY’S GOOD NEWS

A 13-year-old in Delaware named Damir Border wanted to stay up late and watch Netflix last Tuesday night.  His mom said no.  But after she went to bed, he kept watching anyway.

And the fact that he didn’t listen actually saved BOTH of their lives.

Around 1:00 A.M., their breaker box sparked a fire that ended up destroying their mobile home.  But Damir was still watching Netflix when it happened.  So he was able to wake his mom up in time, and even called 911.

Their home was a total loss.  But obviously the fact that Damir and his mom are both okay is what really matters.

His dad was working the night shift when it happened.  So no one else was home.

BABIES WHO ARE BOTTLE-FED ARE MORE LIKELY TO BE LEFT-HANDED

It turns out your dominant hand may be more influenced by nature than by nurture.

Researchers from five different countries, looked at over 62,000 pairs of mothers and babies. They found that breastfeeding for more than six months overall decreased the chance of any baby being left-handed from 13 percent to ten percent.

Researchers notes that this means that about 22 percent of cases of left-handedness among bottle-fed infants may be attributed to a lack of breastfeeding.

Study author Philippe Hujoel, a dentistry professor at the UW School of Public Health added, “We think breastfeeding optimizes the process the brain undergoes when solidifying handedness.” Possible causes include the nutritional content of breast milk versus formula milk, or hormones released in the baby when in contact with the mother’s breast.

THOSE WITH DARK-COLORED EYES MAY BE MORE PRONE TO SAD

It’s that time of year when it’s dark and cold, and some people begin to suffer with Seasonal Affective Disorder.

In a new study, participants were given a questionnaire that helped “estimate the extent to which an individual varies in mood with the seasons.”

The data revealed that people with light or blue eyes “scored significantly lower on the seasonal pattern assessment questionnaire than those with dark or brown eyes.”

The study leader says this echo’s the findings of previous research, and may be explained by the fact that those with lighter-colored eyes are more sensitive, and therefore don’t absorb as much light as those with darker-colored eyes do.

Additionally, those with lighter-colored eyes don’t release as much of the sleep hormone melatonin in the body in the colder months, compared to those with darker-colored eyes.
