On Today’s Show
January 21, 2019 9:35 amA frog in Bolivia has been living in captivity alone for 10 years. And researchers thought he might be the last of his species. But now he has a GIRLFRIEND after they recently found five more of the frogs in the rain forest, two of them female. His name is Romeo . . . the girl frog is Juliet . . . and they could save their species if they mate.
She’s still in quarantine, so they haven’t met yet. But the goal is to have them mate and produce more frogs that can then be reintroduced into the wild.

A study in the American Journal of Cardiology warns of the risks of not getting enough sleep. Scientists looked at four-thousand middle-aged people without any known history of heart disease.
They discovered those who got six hours or less of sleep per night had a higher amount of plaque buildup in their arteries than those who got at least seven hours. Previous studies have shown the same thing but this was the first with a sample size this large that actually quantified how much sleep is enough.

ENTERTAINMENT
“Glass” won the box office this weekend, with $40.6 millionThat’s good, but “Glass” wasn’t the hit that some people expected.
Last week, predictions had the movie making up to $75 million. It’s possible that it was hurt by bad reviews
- “The Upside”, $15.7 million. Up to $44 million in its 2nd week.
- NEW: The Japanese anime “Dragon Ball Super: Broly”, $10.7 million. Up to $21.1 million since last Wednesday.
You’re about to pay more for Netflix.
In Canada Netflix’s standard plan allowing customers to watch content on two screens at a time, will now cost $3 more at $13.99 a month. The basic plan, which doesn’t offer high-definition video and only allows one stream, will rise a dollar to $9.99 a month.
A lot of FURIOUS people are flooding social media to pretend that they’re so upset they’re CANCELING . . . but Netflix knows most people won’t do that.
Obviously, a big reason for this is that Netflix is keeping subscribers happy. Last month, they dropped $100 million to keep “Friends” for another year, and Variety“ says they spent $13 BILLION on content last year.
For comparison, HBO “only” spent $2.5 billion in 2017, and CBS spent $4 billion.

TODAY IS……………….
- “Blue Monday”, the third Monday of January has been awarded this gloomy title due to a combination of post-Christmas blues, cold dark nights and the arrival of unpaid credit card bills. Though we may say we hate Mondays, a 2008 Australian study found that the day that scores lowest for most employees’ morale is actually Wednesday.
- “Martin Luther King Day” in America, a federal holiday observed annually on the 3rd Monday of January celebrating the life and achievements of late civil rights leader Dr Martin Luther King Jr (1929-68). King’s equal rights campaign is documented in the movie “Selma”.
- “Squirrel Appreciation Day”. There are over 200 types of squirrels in North America alone, which can be put into three groups: Ground squirrels, tree squirrels and flying squirrels, which cannot actually fly, but have flaps of skin that allow them to glide from tree to tree

ACTUAL OLD-TIME REMEDIES THAT WERE USED TO TREAT THE FLU:
☞ The Color Red: One of the most questionable preventative measures was wearing the color red, which according to some folk-medicine records, the flu “didn’t like.”
☞ Bloodletting: For more than 2,000 years, bloodletting was used to treat a range of conditions. When it came to the flu, the theory was simple: By draining the body of blood, and therefore of toxins and disease, doctors could cure a patient of whatever ailed them. It didn’t work—in fact, it killed many, including George Washington.
☞ Laxatives: If bloodletting worked by draining the body of toxins and disease, you can see where laxatives would seem to be the next best thing, and easier to induce. It seems to have been used as a preventive measure.
☞ Whiskey: According to one study from the 1940s, two ounces of 95-per cent grain alcohol in a glass of ginger ale could raise the threshold of pain 45 per cent for two hours.
☞ Chicken soup: In 1978, pulmonologists asked healthy volunteers to choose to drink either hot water, cold water, or hot chicken soup, then they measured changes in congestion. They found that while hot water helped clear congestion, hot soup worked even better. We’re still not sure exactly why this works, but the results have been replicated again and again.

TODAY’S GOOD NEWS
Would any of your exes do this for you? Bill Henrichs and Mary Ziegler live in Minnesota. They met in high school and were married 21 years before they got divorced in 1995.
But even after their divorce, they stayed friendly. Partly because they have two kids together. So they still saw a lot of each other.
Anyway, they’re both in their early 60s now, and Bill had recently been having health issues. But he’s doing a lot better now . . . after Mary gave him one of her KIDNEYS.
Obviously most of us would never do that for an ex. People usually try to KEEP their stuff in a divorce, not give it to the other person. Especially not an organ.
But about 40 of Bill’s friends and family had already been tested, and none of them were a match. So Mary says there was no doubt in her mind. Quote, “[We] grew up together, and I knew that my children and grandchildren needed [him] in their lives.”
The surgery happened in October and went great. Bill says what Mary did for him was “incredible,” and he’s still blown away by it.
He also joked that all couples should try to get along after a divorce . . . because, quote, “you just might need a kidney” someday.

Today Is “Blue Monday” . . . the Most Depressing Day of the Year
Today is “Blue Monday” . . . a.k.a. the most DEPRESSING day of the year.
A British psychologist named Dr. Cliff Arnall came up with the concept of “Blue Monday” back in 2005.
And he says it’s because the third Monday in January is the perfect storm of peak terribleness . . .
- Bad weather.
- Enough time has passed since Christmas that you’ve lost the good feelings . . . and now all you have left is the debt.
- Your New Year’s resolutions have failed.
- Your motivation has hit rock bottom.
- And you’re realizing you’re now facing down another entire year of work ahead of you, without summer or any vacations in sight.

HERE’S HOW TO AVOID A COLD WHEN YOU FEEL ONE COMING ON
Cold and flu season is here so how can you avoid getting a nasty bug?
Dr. Nodar Jonas, medical director at Upper East Side Rehabilitation and Nursing Center in Manhattan says it’s all about what you do when you first start feeling sick. Jonas says you should treat early symptoms the same as you would if you were experiencing a full-blown cold.
Dr. Kristin Dean, associate medical director at Doctor On Demand adds that most of the time over the counter (OTC) products haven’t been proven to be super effective in preventing a full-blown cold, so instead you should make sure you stick to the basics– stay hydrated and get plenty of rest.
You could also add ingredients into your diet like garlic and ginger, which certified holistic health coach Jessica Rosen says have anti-inflammatory properties. She also says green juice can help you fight off a cold.

Rare Calico Lobster Rescued at Maryland Store
A rare calico lobster has been spared from the boiling pot thanks to its 1-in-30 million mutation and may be headed to the Georgia Aquarium.
The owner of Ocean City Seafood in Silver Spring, Md., noticed the lobster in a batch of crustaceans caught off the coast of Maine and set it aside from the other, more typically colored lobsters for sale at his store.
The owner consulted with the National Aquarium in Baltimore on how to care for the rare lobster, now named Eve.
The crustacean lives in a saltwater tank at the store for the time being, but might wind up at the Georgia Aquarium. Ocean City spokeswoman Rita Montoya said the store’s owners are determining the best permanent home for Eve.
“Our focus is making sure she stays alive and is in an environment that is healthy,”

Healthy During Flu Season
- Get a flu shot. Everyone who’s 6 months old and older should get a flu shot. It’s especially important if you’re over 65, or if you live or work around children or the elderly.
- Wash your hands. Washing your hands frequently with soap and hot water helps to kill germs. Hand sanitizers like Purell should only be used if soap and water aren’t available.
- Stay home if you’re sick. If you feel like you’re coming down with the flu, stay home from work or school rather than risk getting other people sick.
- Eat right. A good diet and a vitamin C supplement can help make your immune system stronger to ward off the flu.
- Stay informed. Flu season is generally from October through May. And during that time, the Public Health Unit Health typically posts updates to monitor the severity of flu season.

I guess it fits because it’s the chance of surviving if you try to break into our home.”
In the meantime, Carrie is still anxiously awaiting the arrival of their new baby boy. She is reportedly very close to her due date, although it has never officially been announced.
THOMAS RHETT SAYS NEW ALBUM WILL HAVE AT LEAST TWO COLLABORATIONS –
Thomas Rhett is working on a new album to release later this year, and his plan at this point is to include at least a couple of musical collaborations. If you follow Thomas on social media, then you know he’s been co-writing with people like Nick Jonas and Charlie Puth, so the options are wide open, but for now Thomas is keeping his lips sealed. He tells us he learned that lesson the hard way:
FAST FACTS
Thomas plays Luke Bryan’s Crash My Playa event in Riviera, Mexico on January 25th.
His Very Hot Summer tour kicks off in May with Dustin Lynch, Russell Dickerson and Rhett Akins.
