This seems like a pretty solid reason to avoid using toilets in Australia. Last week a woman in Brisbane was using the bathroom at a relative’s home when she was bitten by a five-foot carpet python. Helen Richards, age 59, said she felt a “sharp tap” on her “bottom” and then “jumped up with my pants down and turned around to see what looked like a longneck turtle receding back into the bowl.” A snake handler was able to safely remove the animal from the toilet. She said it’s common to find the reptiles in the toilet when the weather is hot. Richards’ bites were treated with antiseptic and have mostly healed.

According to two new studies out of Switzerland, you’d LOVE IT if someone rocked you to sleep like your parents did when you were a baby.

The researchers found that adults slept better when they were in a bed that had a motor gently rocking it back and forth.  And those people had DEEPER sleep than people in regular beds.

Why?  The researchers say when we rock, our brains catch on to the rhythm, and it helps us prepare for a deeper sleep.

ENTERTAINMENT

Matt Leblanc says he nabbed two things from the set of “Friends”:  The ball from the foosball table and the Magna Doodle from Joey and Chandler’s apartment door.  He took the Magna Doodle for the crew member who used to write stuff on it for the show.

Kerry Washington’s Broadway play “American Son” is coming to Netflix. The streaming television service is planning on adapting Christopher Demos-Brown’s critically acclaimed stage production with the original director and cast, and a few changes to fit the platform. Moosehead Breweries’ donation to make Saskatchewan’s Mac the Moose

A New Brunswick brewery has donated $25,000 to the cause of making a Saskatchewan moose statue the tallest in the world once again.

Trevor Grant, with Moosehead Breweries, says it felt like a no-brainer for the company to help get Moose Jaw’s Mac the Moose back on top.

Mac held the title of world’s tallest moose statue for decades at almost 10 metres high.

But Norway recently erected a silver moose that edges out Mac by 30 centimetres.

Grant says a moose has been has been a part of the brewery’s brand since 1933.

A $50,000 GoFundMe campaign has been launched to fund Mac’s renovation and $12,000 had been raised before the Moosehead donation Wednesday morning.

Giving Mac bigger antlers is the most likely solution to make him taller. Adding an RCMP Stetson or stilettos are other potential modifications.

Mac weighs 9,000 kilograms and has been welcoming visitors from his perch along the Trans-Canada Highway since 1984. He won an award in 2013 for being Moose Jaw’s best celebrity.

TODAY’S GOOD NEWS

There’s a famous scene from “The Office” where Michael Scott takes a CPR lesson, and the instructor tells him to perform chest compressions to the beat of “Stayin’ Alive” by The Bee Gees.  And, of course, it devolves into chaos.

Well . . . that scene literally just saved a life.

There’s a 21-year-old guy named Cross Scott . . . no relation to Michael Scott . . . in Tucson, Arizona.  And he was driving earlier this month when he saw a woman who was unconscious in her car.

He broke the window with a rock and found the woman didn’t have much of a pulse, so he knew he needed to try CPR.  And . . . that scene from “The Office” popped into his head.

So he started performing chest compressions on the woman to the tune of “Stayin’ Alive” . . . and after about a minute, the woman took a breath and threw up.

The paramedics arrived a few minutes later, and they told Cross if he hadn’t jumped in, things could’ve gone VERY differently.

WHAT’S YOUR TAKE?…….

Bride Draws the Line with Her Wedding: ‘No Murderers’

An Australian bride’s line when it came to wedding invitations—”No murderers”—apparently didn’t go over well on Facebook.

According to Australia’s News Network, the unidentified vegan banned meat-eating family members from her wedding and got slammed for it: “When your ‘family’ tries to guilt trip you into letting them come to your fully vegan wedding, even though they’re omnivores,” the Aussie wrote along with two laughing emojis on a vegan Facebook group.

“Just for some context, some family members were told they are not invited to my wedding because we don’t want to host murderers. Our wedding is supposed to be one of the happiest days of our lives.”

Now, the responses: “As a vegan, this is messed up … you can’t go around calling your family murderers!” one user apparently wrote. “She is out of her mind. I’d be happy to cut her off of my life if I were the family.”

Others called her “ridiculous” or criticized her for missing an opportunity to “prove that vegan food can be just as delicious as omnivore food.”

In her defense, the bride says she didn’t want “the weight of having people that still kill animals” on her conscience: “…I am not compromising the ethics that I share with everyone here.”

ARE WE GETTING SOFT?

The Governor of Kentucky says the U.S. is “getting soft,” because we’re canceling school over cold weather.  Several school districts in the Louisville area were closed yesterday.  The temperature was 5f / -15c  and some kids have to wait outside 30 minutes for their bus.

The Governor of Kentucky said America was “soft” for not sending kids to school in sub-zero weather.  Al Roker called him a nitwit.

Weird Things Your Body Does in Freezing Cold Weather

Most of the country is an ice box right now because of the polar vortex.  Here are seven weird things your body does in freezing cold weather . . .

  1. It immediately redirects bloodaway from your extremities, and toward your vital organs.  That’s why your hands and feet tend to feel cold first.  It’s your body’s way of keeping your core temperature up.

  1. You get goosebumps.  All mammals fluff up their body hair when they’re cold, including us.  But since we’ve evolved and don’t have much body hair, you just see the tiny muscles around your follicles contracting.  That’s what goosebumps are.

  1. You start to shiver, which actually warms you up a little bit.  It’s like a self-defense mechanism for your body.  When your muscles shake, they generate heat.  And that keeps your core temperature from falling too fast.

  1. You start feeling confused.  It’s a sign of hypothermia, and it starts happening when your body temperature gets down to about 95 degrees.  A lot of people have trouble focusing and start slurring their words at that point.

  1. You eventually stop shivering, and that’s when you know you have SEVERE hypothermia.  It’s also when people feel the need to lie down, which is dangerous.

  1. Your skin and the tissue under it literally start to freeze.  That’s what frostbiteis.  And it can happen in as little as five minutes in sub-zero temperatures.  If you’re not wearing a hat, your EARS are one of the first things to go.

YOUR GENES:
The elusive secret to staying slim has been found.  And you aren’t going to like it.

Yes, a good diet and a lot of exercise will certainly help.  But a new study says really, it’s all in your genes. Researchers at Cambridge University went through DNA samples of healthy thin adults, and compared them with DNA samples of obese people and people of average weight.

And guess what?  They found that overweight participants were more likely to have genes linked to obesity, while slim people had fewer of the genes connected with being overweight.

One of the professors pointed out that “It’s easy to rush to judgement and criticize people for their weight, but science shows that things are far more complex.”

The next goal for researchers is to find the exact genes that are linked to thinness — with the long-term goal of helping people manage weight-loss.

  1. It’s so cold that Pennsylvania is having FROST QUAKES, which are like earthquakes that happen with freezing ground.  It’s so cold that crews in Chicago had to set train tracks ON FIRE to clear all the snow and ice.  And it’s so cold people are throwing boiling water in the air and watching it turn instantly into snow.

The police in McLean, Illinois said they arrested ELSA from “Frozen”.  Unfortunately they stole the photos from when a police department in South Carolina did that stunt 4 years ago.  It’s too cold to be original, I guess.

  1. According to a new survey, we’ll spend an extra 24 HOURS in bed in the winter.  That’s right:  An entire day out of the year will go toward you hiding under the blanket.

That’s based on spending an extra 16 minutes a day in bed for 90 days.

The survey also found that the average person is late to work seven times during the winter . . . and one in five have taken a sick day at some point rather than go outside into the cold.

  1. A guy in South Carolina has been arrested and fined for catching a 10-foot alligator and moving it without a permit.  His name is Logan Cambron, and everybody in the area knows him because he dresses up in a chicken suit and stands on the road to slow down traffic.

Midland Singer Mark Wystrach Used to Be a Bouncer

We know Midland singer MARK WYSTRACH used to be a Calvin Klein underwear model . . . but he has another “used to be” that’s just as interesting.  Before he was in Midland, he was a bouncer in a honky-tonk.

QUOTE, “My family owns a restaurant, live honky-tonk bar and saloon, and when I got bigger up to about 200 pounds my brother and I would come home and we would bounce the bar.

“After like nine o’clock, the restaurant shut down and turned into a honky-tonk, and let’s just say I’ve seen my fair share of like roadhouse-esque brawls in there.”
