Two hundred people got stuck for 36 hours on an Amtrak from Seattle to Los Angeles this week.  A tree fell on the tracks during a snowstorm, and everyone had to stay on the train near a small town in Oregon that didn’t have any power.  They finally made it to Eugene, Oregon yesterday.  Some people who boarded in Seattle were on the train for over 50 hours.  One passenger talked to the news while the train was still stuck, and said people were in better spirits than you’d expect and joked that they should all get together again next year.

First New York is looking to change the sound of their sirens, and now the city of Ottawa is changing the sounds its snow plows and trucks make when they back up.  Instead of the “beep beep beep,” it’s more like static.  It’s supposed to reduce noise pollution, and they claim you’ll still hear it if you’re behind the truck.  They’re just worried people might not associate the new sound with a truck backing up.

The deputy mayor of Stor-Elvdal, Norway is set to arrive in Moose Jaw, Saskatchewan later this week for a “moose summit.”

Linda Otnes Henriksen will meet with city representatives, attend a Moose Jaw Warriors hockey game, tour some schools and visit Mac the Moose.

Her city’s moose statue is 30-centimetres taller than Mac, and the two have been engaging in some good-natured sparring over who has the world’s tallest moose statue.

ENTERTAINMENT

Rami Malek immediately learned that with great highs come great lows when he fell from the stage following his Oscar win for Best Actor. Moments after the “Bohemian Rhapsody” star scored the top award on Sunday night, he fell and was treated by paramedics. It’s unclear how he landed, but he seemed OK after being helped to his feet. It was a big night for Malek, who won his first Academy Award for his portrayal of Freddie Mercury. “Bohemian Rhapsody” did very well during the awards show, ending up with 5 trophies.

Snowplow Driver Took Out 30 Blocks Worth of Mailboxes

I’m sure snowplow drivers all over this country accidentally destroy a few mailboxes from time to time.  But THIS might be a record.

The city of Lincoln, Nebraska got about 18cm of snow over recently.  And now they’re investigating how a plow driver took out 30 blocks worth of mailboxes on Sunday.  That’s right:  Not 30 mailboxes, 30 BLOCKS OF MAILBOXES.

They say they’ll have to cover the cost of the damage to all the mailboxes if they find the driver was negligent.  Why do I have a feeling they’re going to determine he wasn’t?

Thanks to Heavy Snow, Teen Makes $35K in 4 Days

Seattle’s intense weather the state’s snowiest February in seven decades has left accumulations of up to 10 inches in some areas led to a windfall for one 18-year-old. David Holston, 18, who does landscaping and snowplowing in Idaho, was visiting his mom in Seattle when a friend gave him the idea to advertise his services there. He published a Craigslist ad, got a $1,000 job offer, and went back to Idaho to get his plow truck. He drove it back to Washington and made $35,000 in four days plowing snow last week

TODAY’S GOOD NEWS

A firefighter and nurse with the University of Maryland Medical Center got a surprise delivery Saturday when their soon-to-be adopted son was delivered to their doorstep.

Michael and Karen Faherty met in Reserve Officer Training Corps while student. The two served in the Army and settled down in Baltimore. After four years of marriage and dealing with infertility, they decided to adopt to start their family.

The adoption process took a year and they waited to hear from the agency if birth parents had chosen them. Recently, Michael saw a group of people gathering in front of his house.

“And then I hear them start to sing and then I start to home in on some of the faces and I look and think, ‘Wait, I know these people,’” he said.

Michael and Karen were expecting a visit from the adoption agency for a last-minute home inspection to make sure they would provide suitable housing if a family chose them to become the adoptive parents. Agency founder Dean Kirschner tries to make every “Gotcha Day” special for new parents. That’s the day many adoptive families celebrate as the anniversary of when an adoption was finalized. When he found out Michael is a firefighter, he decided to coordinate with his department to make the delivery memorable.

Their child, who they named Michael Terrance Faherty III, wasn’t the only surprise. The firefighters filled the back of Michael’s ambulance with diapers and other gifts.

Is 30 Minutes of Exercise Before Work the Key to Being Healthy?

A new study found that just 30 minutes of moderate exercise a day makes you a lot healthier.

Here’s the hard part:  You should try to fit that exercise in BEFORE you go to work.

Researchers in Australia had people exercise for 30 minutes each morning, and found it drastically lowered their blood pressure for the entire day.

The good news is it doesn’t have to be an insane workout.  All they did was walk at a moderate pace on a treadmill for a half-hour.  So if you can fit in a brisk walk before work, that’s enough.

It lowered people’s blood pressure so much, it was on par with taking a high blood pressure medication.  Plus, there were mental health benefits as well.

When people also got up and walked around during the day, they had even better results.  Ideally, you should get 30 minutes of exercise in the morning, then walk around at work for about three minutes every half-hour.

It lowered people’s blood pressure across the board.  But it was even more effective for women.

LUKE BRYAN TAKES ‘WHAT MAKES YOU COUNTRY’ TO NUMBER ONE

Luke Bryan‘s “What Makes You Country” climbs to the top spot on the Country Aircheck/Mediabase chart this week. He co-wrote the tune with his buddies Dallas Davidson and Ashley Gorley, and he tells us it describes exactly how he grew up in Georgia. [“I think that what makes me country is where I was raised — Leesburg, Georgia — how I was brought up saying ‘Yes sir,’ ‘No sir,’ ‘Yes, ma’am,’ ‘No, ma’am,’ hopefully with manners and raised with a work ethic and raised in the outdoors fishing and hunting and playing sports. But yeah, I would say definitely it starts with my small-town upbringing and how we were raised; church on Sundays as much as we could. But just enjoying life and living life in a small town.”]

Luke is nominated for Entertainer of the Year, an award he’s taken home twice, and Single of the Year for “Most People Are Good” at the 54th Annual ACM Awards, airing live from the MGM Grand Garden Arena in Las Vegas on April 7th at 8 p.m. ET on CBS.

Luke and his fellow American Idol judges Katy Perry and Lionel Richie will be back for a new season of Idol on Sunday (March 3rd) at 8 p.m. ET.

LUKE COMBS CREDITS BROOKS & DUNN WITH SHAPING COUNTRY MUSIC CAREER – (02/19/2019)

Luke Combs gets to duet with possibly the biggest influence on his music career, Brooks & Dunn, on the upcoming Reboot album, due out on April 5th. Luke joins Kix Brooks and Ronnie Dunn on their 1991 debut chart-topping hit, “Brand New Man,” and as he tells us, it’s a very big deal because if not for the duo, he might not be making records today. [“That was like it for me. Brooks & Dunn, that was my thing. Those were my guys growing up. Still are, but when they were coming out their sound was very progressive but to me that was like my first experience with country music. To me, like that’s what it is, that’s it at it’s best and that’s what it should be. I think their influence is one of the main reasons that I’m doing this to this day is the impact that they had on me from such a young age.”]

Brooks & Dunn’s Reboot album will also feature 11 other hits reworked as duets with Kane Brown, Thomas Rhett, Brett Young, LANCO, Ashley McBryde, Brothers Osborne, Midland, Cody Johnson, Jon Pardi, Tyler Booth and Kacey Musgraves.
