On Today’s Show

There’s a businessman in the Atlanta area named Ketan Shah.  And for the past few months, he’d been advertising special access to great Super Bowl tickets.

He wound up scamming about $1 MILLION from around a dozen different people . . . including close friends, old business contacts, and even his own MOTHER.

And then . . . he vanished.

The cops say they’re trying to track him down.  A spokesman says, quote, “It’s not that he posted some ad and random people are contacting this guy . . . he’s known these people for many years.”

A man named Ray Schmuecker in Dubuque, Iowa lost his wedding ring sometime in the early 70’s, and it was recently found inside the engine of an Oldsmobile.  The man who found it reunited it with Ray, who’s now 93-years-old.  Ray’s daughter, who was recently diagnosed with breast cancer, took it as a sign that everything was going to be okay.

ENTERTAINMENT

“Glass” won the box office for the third straight weekend, making another $9.5 million.  That’s a very low total to win the box office, but with the freezing weather and the Super Bowl apparently no one wanted to go to the movies this weekend.

  1. “The Upside”, $8.9 million.  Up to $75.6 million in its 4th week.

“The Big Bang Theory” is bringing in a bunch of guest stars for a special “Dungeons & Dragons” themed episode.  Lined up to appear are:  William Shatner, Kareem Abdul-Jabbar, Kevin Smith, Joe Manganiello and frequent guest star — and Sheldon nemesis — Wil Wheaton. An airdate has not yet been announced.

BAD NEWS FROM THE POLAR VORTEX

The Illinois State Police pulled over a woman in Champaign, Illinois and she was doing 115 MILES-PER-HOUR . . . in a 35 zone, with snow on the road.

She was arrested and taken to jail.

——————————————————————————————–

The police in Caithness, Scotland pulled over a guy because he was driving with a thick layer of snow covering his windshield.  He’d only cleared off a small square in front of the driver’s side so he could see.

He wound up getting a ticket and he’ll have to go to court.

The fire department in Madison, Wisconsin got a call on Thursday afternoon about a car that had caught on fire.

How?  The owner tried heating his car up by putting hot charcoals underneath it.

He said he’d been having trouble starting the car for the past three days, so he thought the charcoal might finally thaw it out.

The firefighters were able to put out the fire before it could spread, but it did some serious damage to the car.

BELLY BUTTON MYSTERY SOLVED

There is finally an answer to a mystery that captivated Canadians this week. How was the bellybutton created on the canal snow bear.

Valerie Duhamel the artist behind the snow bear that appeared this week on Montreal’s Lachine Canal. The bear was wide — at about 12 feet — making the jump from the bear’s outline to its belly button almost impossible.

Hundreds of Canadians have sent in theories as to how the bear got its navel — and very few of them guessed the truth.

It was five snowballs, lobbed successfully into the middle of the bear.

She was surprised by the media attention her creation has received.

“Yes, it was five snowballs thrown in the same place. And I never would have thought my bear would be all over the media,”. A number of people following the snow bear mystery reacted to her impeccable aim with awe, impressed that all five snowballs landed perfectly in the centre of the bear.

A spokesperson for the Lachine Canal reminds Montrealers that walking on the canal is illegal in the winter because of safety concerns.

TODAY’S GOOD NEWS

The polar vortex was brutal last week.  But here are four GOOD stories that have come out of all the freezing cold weather . . .

  1.  Someone in Chicago rented enough hotel rooms to get SEVENTY homeless people out of the cold on Wednesday.  They were staying in tents, and the Salvation Army was trying to find someplace warm for them.  Then an anonymous person stepped up and wrote a very big check.

  1. A pharmacy in central Michigan knew people needed their prescriptions, but didn’t want them going outside in the cold.  Especially the elderly, so the pharmacists jumped on a SNOWMOBILE and made deliveries.

  1. All week, Lyft has been offering free rides to “warming centers” in cities all across the Midwest, including Cleveland, Chicago, Minneapolis, Milwaukee, and Detroit.

  1. An 82-year-old grandmother in Muskegon, Michigan is going viral after she braved the sub-zero temperatures to snow-blow her driveway this week.  And she cleared snow for her NEIGHBORS too.

Her name is Marlen Downing, and her kids pleaded with her to stay inside.  But she says she’s a “tough, old broad” from North Dakota . . . and she likes running her snow blower, because it reminds her of her HARLEY, which she still rides in the summer.

EXPERTS ANSWER: IS IT OK TO EXERCISE WHEN IT’S COLD OUT? (01/30/2019)

Some people hate the idea of working out outside in the winter months, but is it unhealthy to do so?

Dr. Robert Glatter, an assistant professor of emergency medicine at Lenox Hill Hospital, Northwell Health, says as long as you’re bundled up and you’re not heading out into subzero temperatures, the cold can actually sometimes improve your health by kickstarting your immune system.

Certified personal trainer and holistic nutritionist Ashley Walter says in addition to monitoring the temperature outdoors you should also keep an eye on the windchill, as well as precipitation forecasts. She tells Elite Daily, “The one big advisory to look out for isn’t outdoor temperature, but windchill below freezing [because] windchill brings on frostbite and that can’t be prevented, no matter how warm we dress.

Skip the precipitation like freezing rain, too. Snow is actually fine if you have shoes with good traction.” However, there are some workouts you should avoid doing outdoors in the winter, including things like lengthy yoga practices, long walks, and anything that requires you to be outside and/or stay still for long periods of time.

RANDOM REPORT

  1. The term “Hail Mary” for a long, desperate throw in football started in 1975, when Roger Staubachthrew a 50-yard touchdown pass to win a playoff game for Dallas over Minnesota.

And, in an interview after, he said, quote, “I guess you could call it a Hail Mary.  You throw it up and pray.”

  1. The Canary Islands aren’t named after the birds.  The name comes from the Latin “Canariae Insulae” . . . which means “Island of the Dogs.”  It was chosen because there were a ton of wild dogs there.

  1. Caesar salad comes from Tijuana, Mexico.  It was created by an Italian immigrant named Caesar Cardini at a restaurant he owned there.

  1. There was almost another Disney park in the U.S. . . . in Ohio.  In 1960, Cedar Point amusement park in Sandusky, Ohio made a deal to convert into another Disneyland location . . . but it fell through.

ARTS AND CRAFTS:
You know the routine.  You have something that you NEED to remember, so you write it down.

When the time comes that you need the info, not only have you lost the piece of paper that you wrote it on, but you’ve also forgotten what it was that you wrote.

It turns out you should have drawn a picture.  A study found that drawing is the best way to retain new information. Sketching it out was determined to be more effective than writing (and rewriting) notes, visualization exercises or just passively looking at images.

And before you say that you “can’t draw”, the study also found the same results to be true even if the person was a poor artist.

One of the study-leads says that a perfect example would be that you are much more likely to remember the groceries you need to pick up later if you draw a picture of them, rather than write them down.

The findings are believed to be especially valuable for aging adults and those who suffer from dementia.

MONDAY FEBRUARY 4TH

TODAY’S BIRTHDAYS

[46] Óscar de la Hoya, boxer (multiple world titles in six different weight classes/compiled a record of 39-6/gold medal at the 1992 Olympics

——————————————————————————————————————————-

  1. Tom Brady and the Patriotsbeat the Rams 13-3 in the lowest scoring Super Bowl in history.  Patriots receiver Julian Edelman had a good game and was named the MVP.  Otherwise, the game was mostly a showcase for both teams’ KICKERS, with a few nice defensive plays sprinkled in.

  1. “Glass”won the box office for a third weekend in a row, with an additional $9.5 million.  It was a slow week for movies, probably because of the cold weather and, you know, that football game thingy.

  1. The San Antonio Spurs – New Orleans Pelicans game came to a halt on Saturday because a LIVE BAT was flying around the court.  But the Spurs mascot, who was wearing a Batman costume, showed up with a giant net and captured it.

The mascot was ready for action because several bats flew onto the court during Thursday’s game.

  1. In case you missed this, one of the fans at yesterday’s Super Bowl was a seventh grader from New Hampshire named Dejah Rondeau.  She’s a quarterback on her school’s football team, and other kids were bullying her because she’s a girl.  Patriots receiver Julian Edelman heard about it and gave her two free Super Bowl tickets.

GEORGE STRAIT ANNOUNCES NEW ALBUM, SINGLE

George Strait will release a new album called Honky Tonk Time Machine on Friday, March 29th.

This will be George’s 30th career studio album.

The album’s lead single is called “God and Country Music,” and it introduces a very special vocal guest, George’s grandson, Harvey Strait.

Other than having multiple platinum songs, numerous awards and 60 Number One hits, one thing remains the same for George – his consistency. [“Consciously, the only thing I did was just try to go out and find the best songs I could find, cut the best songs I could cut, and there’s been times when I’ve gone in the studio with a song that I thought would be great for me and after about two or three tries I just can’t because it’s just not working, whether it’s vocally or whether I’m just not feeling the song at all. There’s been a few of those times, not a lot of them but there have been a few of them.  So I think I’ve been – I think I know what works for me.  Like I said there’s been a few times where I’ve been fooled but it but I think for the most part I know what’s going to work for me and I know what I like and I’ve always said it’s the melody that catches me the first time I hear a song and then you kind of go back and listen to what the song is about and what it’s saying.  So if both of those are good then you get the whole package.”]

George performed his 21st and 22nd sold out Strait to Vegas shows at Las Vegas’ T-Mobile Arena this past weekend.

JIMMIE ALLEN STAYED THE PATH THANKS TO A TIMELY RING

Jimmie Allen is a superstitious guy, and he makes sure to carry his good luck charms with him wherever he goes. One in particular, an LA Kings replica championship ring, came his way when he was about to abandon his music dream forever. Jimmie’s grandmother had died just a few months before his son was born and he was feeling pretty down and out. He decided to take in an LA Kings hockey game back in 2014 and that’s when he knew he had to keep pursuing music. [“Nothing was going on in my musical life and I was just frustrated. I was in LA at the time. I was like, ‘Yeah, I’m done with this music stuff.’ I was like, ‘God, if you have a plan for me, if this music thing is what I should be doing then I need a sign, I need a trophy, I need something to hold onto,’ and I’m just throwing out the craziest requests that won’t be fulfilled to give me an excuse to quit. Little did I know that the game that I went to, they were celebrating the LA Kings winning the Stanley Cup from the year before, so as soon as I walk into the game and walk up to the suite they were handing out these replica rings. I said, ‘Damn!’ So for me, that was my sign just to keep going.”]

Just a few years later, Jimmie is a bona fide hitmaker, recently charting his first Number One hit with “Best Shot.”

A Horse Stepped on Justin Moore’s Leg During a Photo Shoot

A horse stepped on JUSTIN MOORE’s right leg last week during a photo shoot for his upcoming album.  He took it well, and even posted a couple of photos.  You can see that it’s bruised and swollen, but nothing looks serious.

He even joked about it in the caption, writing, “Anything for art.  First time in my career I’ve been stepped on by a horse during an album photo shoot.  Hopefully, we got the shot, though.  New album, ‘Late Nights And Longnecks’, coming soon.” It doesn’t sound like it’s going to cause him to miss any stage time either.  According to his Facebook page, his next scheduled show is this Friday in Canton, Ohio.

Interesting Facts and Stats from Super Bowl 53

After last night’s Super Bowl, we ventured out into the Internet in search of some trivia and interesting facts on Super Bowl 53.  Here’s what we came up with:

  1. Tom Brady wasn’t exactly AWESOME last night, but he did orchestrate a game-winning drive in the fourth quarter.  Brady now has six game winning drives in the fourth quarter or overtime of the Super Bowl.  Nobody else has more than six game-winning drives in the entire POSTSEASON since 1970.

  1. The Rams are the 2nd in Super Bowl history to fail to score a touchdown.  The other was the 1971 Dolphins.

  1. Brady (41) and Bill Belichick(66) are now the oldest quarterback and head coach to win a Super Bowl.  Brady passes Charles Haley for the most Super Bowl titles by a player (6).  And Belichick ties George Halas and Curly Lambeau for the most NFL championships by a head coach (6).

  1. The Patriots won their sixth Super Bowl title, tying the Steelers for the most all-time.  All of New England’s have come since 2001, within 18 seasons.  The Steelers did it in a 35-year span.

  1. You might remember that Boston also won the World Series in the fall . . . so this is the city of Boston’s 12TH championship in 17 YEARS.
