On Today’s Show

There’s a family in Ahlen, Germany that apparently owed quite a bit in back taxes.  And in November, the authorities showed up at their house to seize their valuables.

But one of the things they seized was . . . a PUG the family had bought.  And Germany has a “dog tax,” which they hadn’t paid.

So to recoup that tax, the city officials SOLD the family’s dog on eBay for $850 . . . about half of what purebred pugs sell for.

And now, just to make this even messier, the pug has needed four surgeries since its new owner bought it . . . so now the new owner is suing the tax officials for falsely advertising that the dog had a clean bill of health.

Someone posted a photo of a weird, black sludge oozing out of a vent in a New York subway station.  Some believe it could be tar which has been historically used to waterproof older subway tunnel structures—it started oozing from the roof onto platforms when the seasons turned and it got hotter outside.

Officials say they’re looking into the blob, as well as what’s causing it.

Here’s the scene from “Ghostbusters 2”, where Dan Aykroyd gets lowered down into the subway, and finds a river of slime.

TODAY IS……………….

  • “Ash Wednesday”, marking the first day of Lent in the Western Christian liturgical year. For the devout, it’s a season of spiritual discipline, cleansing, and fasting which occurs in the 40 days (excluding Sundays) before Easter.

  • “Dentist’s Day”, honoring the professionals who help us maintain a big, toothy smile …

  • “Frozen Food Day”, commemorating the first ‘Individually Packaged Frozen Foods’, created by Clarence Birdseye in Springfield, Massachusetts 89 years ago (1930). He got the idea after seeing Canadians thawing and eating naturally frozen fish.

  • “Oreo Cookie Day”, honoring the taste treat many of us deconstruct before eating. The 1st Oreos went on sale on this date in 1912. More than 500 billion have been sold since. Some think the name comes from a combination of taking the ‘re’ from ‘creme’ and placing it between the two ‘o’s in ‘chocolate’, – making ‘o-re-o’.

1896, Charles Brady King drove The First Car on the streets of Detroit.  When it broke down on a busy street, people yelled at him, “Get a horse!”

TWO BIG SURPRISE FINDS:
Volunteer workers for Big Brothers Big Sisters in Springfield, Missouri got a surprise bundle while sorting through donations when they discovered a cellophane-wrapped brick of marijuana among the items.  After a staff member called police, the bundle of cannabis was retrieved by an officer, who estimated the street value of the brick to be around $3,000.

➢ An Australian snake is a long way from home after hitching a ride in a woman’s bag on her flight home to Scotland.  Moira Boxall discovered the python coiled inside one of her shoes as she was unpacking her suitcase at home — 9,300 miles away from Queensland.  After confirming that it was real and she hadn’t been the victim of a prank, Boxall called the SPCA, who identified it as non-venomous took it to quarantine.  It may soon be housed in a Glasgow Zoo. It will be up to Boxall what to do with the extra layer of skin, because it was also discovered that the snake had shed its skin while in transit.

TODAY’S GOOD NEWS

Recently, a high school wrestler in Alabama named Jay Spencer won the state championship in his weight class.  And he’s the first person from his school to ever do it.

But the really impressive part is he’s been legally BLIND since he was three years old.

He has a rare inherited condition called Leber congenital amaurosis.  He can see a little bit when he looks out the corner of his eye.  But that’s about it.

He says wrestling is actually the easiest sport he’s tried, because it’s more about feel than anything else.  But not being able to see is still a big disadvantage.

He wrestled in 37 matches this season and won all but two of them.

After his state championship win on Sunday, he told people to never doubt themselves.  And if you just keep believing in yourself, you can do anything.

ARE YOU KIDDING ME??!! Female cyclist forced to stop race after catching up with the men

The women’s edition of a prestigious one-day cycling race in Belgium was halted after a breakaway rider had almost caught the men’s race, which had started on the same course 10 minutes earlier.

Former Swiss road race champion Nicole Hanselmann rode clear in the opening miles of Omloop het Nieuwsblad on Saturday.

But when she approached the men’s race, organizers of the early cobbled classic called for the women’s race to be neutralized so that a gap would remain between the races.

Hanselmann was allowed to restart ahead of the rest of the field in an attempt to restore the over two-minute advantage she had built up.

But the break coupled with the cold conditions sapped Hanselmann of energy and the rest of the field eventually caught her.

Chantal Blaak wound up winning the race. Hanselmann finished 74th.

DID YOU KNOW?
According to a study. men who have thick, rugged beards enjoy the benefits of being protected from 90-95% of harmful ultraviolet rays on their faces, helping reduce the risk of skin cancer.

They determined that facial hair has a UPF of 2-21, depending on the thickness of the beard.

Having a large beard also protects the face from irritants and can keep the face youthful by retaining moisture and blocking harsh wind.

London’s own Jellybean could be crowned ‘World’s Most Amazing Dog’

His name is Jellybean and he is a three-year-old Australian cattle dog who is in the semifinals of the World’s Most Amazing Dog, an interactive show on Facebook Watch with a grand prize of $100,000.

There’s one more thing to note about Jellybean — he is completely deaf.

But being hearing impaired hasn’t stopped Jellybean from learning and performing a number of tricks over the course of the competition.

Now that it’s the semifinals, owner and trainer Melissa Millet said they’ll have to come up with some new tricks.

“So you think, ‘OK, I used everything I have to get this far, now I have to come up with something new,’” she said.

“I have [come up with something new], and of course I can’t tell you what it is — everybody will have to watch to find out, but I can tell you that when he pulled it off I was high on excitement all day,” Millet said.

While the judges’ decision pushed Jellybean through to the semifinals, he’ll need lots of votes to help him make it to the final round.

“We need the support of our hometown London in the form of supportive comments, and definitely we need votes,” Millet said.

More than winning the title of World’s Most Amazing Dog and the $100,000 grand prize,

Millet hopes Jellybean’s exposure will show people that deaf dogs make wonderful companion animals.

“People think they can’t be trained, they think they have poor temperaments. But with Jellybean, people are going to understand that deaf dogs make wonderful pets, and we’re hoping worldwide that more deaf dogs find homes,” Millet said.

JORDAN DAVIS SAYS HAVING HIT SINGLE WITH BROTHER WAS ALWAYS A GOAL

Jordan Davis‘ latest hit, “Take It From Me,” is even more cause for celebration because he wrote it with his brother and fellow artist, Jacob Davis. Jordan tells us that getting to collaborate with his sibling has been a longtime goal, and together they might get to cross an item off their collective bucket list. [“It’s great for us because I think we both know our strengths. I know what he’s really good at and I think he knows what I’m stronger at when it comes to writing. I mean, there’s nobody that knows me better as an artist, as a writer than Jacob, so it helps a ton, and it was a goal of ours to have a song out, have a single together, and hopefully have it top the charts, and it’s a legitimate possibility now, and it’s been a really, really fun ride to watch this song kind of climb.”]

“Take It From Me” is the second single from Jordan’s debut album, Home State, which has already produced a Number One hit with “Singles You Up.”
