March 7, 2019 9:35 amThe polar vortex freezing weather may have one upside: it killed bugs.
The Pest Management Association says most insects can survive a short period of cold weather, but it’s also likely that some died in the recent extreme weather.
A Virginia Tech experiment says the polar vortex may have killed as much as 95 percent of stink bugs that hadn’t found shelter this winter. Other invasive species such as the emerald ash borer and southern pine beetle, are not likely to survive the winter cold. Still, researchers say, “[…] even if adult pests freeze, they may have already laid eggs which will hatch when the weather warms.”

A guy in New York set up a high-stakes Super Bowl Squares pool this year to scam people, and used fake names for most of the squares to up his chances of winning.
But then real people won all the money, and he was on the hook for 50 grand. Someone called 911 last Wednesday after finding him in his truck with his hands and legs bound. And he claimed that two guys with a gun stole all the money. But police quickly figured out he staged the whole thing.
He’s facing fraud charges. It’s not clear if anyone will get their money back or not.

On Friday’s “Tonight Show”, Seacrest said that he assumed that because he was inside the theater, he would be able to take a seat and enjoy the show along with the other celebs, but according to him, “the ushers and stage managers come and say, ‘Mr. Seacrest, your car is ready.’ I said, ‘No, I just essentially opened the Oscars by saying it’s coming up next.’ That’s when he was informed that there was no ticket in his name. Thief Steals a Sled to Transport Other Stuff He Stole
A 28-year-old guy named Matthew McClure broke into someone’s garage in Erie, Pennsylvania on Monday, and stole a bunch of stuff. He got his hands on some hunting gear, tools, and other various items. But all that stuff was pretty heavy, and he didn’t want to make multiple trips. So he also stole a SLED from the garage to transport the stuff . . . and the tracks he left in the snow led cops straight to his house, less than two blocks away. He’s facing multiple felonies for burglary, criminal trespass, theft, and receiving stolen property. Turns out he was also arrested back in October for two other thefts in the same neighborhood. So he’s facing a parole violation as well.

Police Arrest a Thief Who Kept a Journal with Specific Details of Everything He Stole
The police in Ballwin, Missouri caught a guy last week walking down the street with a bunch of bottles of alcohol in his bag. And he matched the description of someone who’d stolen alcohol from several stores in the past.
Which stores? The cops didn’t have to work too hard to figure that out, because it turns out the guy kept a journal with VERY detailed records of everything he’d stolen on a day-by-day basis.
And on days when he didn’t steal anything, he noted he had an “off day.”
The cops haven’t said what charges he’s facing . . . but they did release a picture of one of his journal pages.

TODAY’S GOOD NEWS
A 36-year-old in Oregon named Jeremy Taylor got stuck in deep snow last Sunday while doing some off-roading.
Apparently, there was no cell reception, so he curled up in his 4-Runner and went to sleep for a while. Then when he woke up the next day, even more snow had fallen. And he still couldn’t get his SUV unstuck.
He tried to hike to a main road, but had to turn back because the snow was too deep. So his only choice was to wait in his car and hope someone found him.
He ended up being stuck there all alone with his dog for FIVE DAYS without any food. But luckily, he did have three packets of Taco Bell FIRE SAUCE he’d left in his car.
He had plenty of water because of all the snow. And you can go a lot longer than five days without food. So the hot sauce probably didn’t save his life. But it’s the only food he had.
Someone on a snowmobile eventually found him on Friday and called 911. Jeremy and his dog were both very hungry when they were rescued, but otherwise they were in good health.

PEOPLE EAT NEARLY 300 EGGS A YEAR
Protein is really having a moment, and it shows– we’re eating a ton of eggs.
The average person is eating an average of 279 eggs per person per year, the highest number since 1973. In 1945 people ate the most eggs per year (405,) while we ate the least in 1995 (229.)
It’s thought this uptick in people eating eggs is due to a change in federal nutritional guidelines, as in 2016 the government said eating high-cholesterol foods such as eggs wasn’t such a bad idea.
That same year egg consumption jumped up six percent, and now nutritionists say protein-heavy diets have boosted the appeal of eggs, as has the trend of eating them atop avocado toast.

SLEEPING LIKE A BABY MAKER:
The running joke when someone is expecting their first child is that they can plan to say “goodbye to sleep” for a while.
But new research says not only is that true, but first-time moms can expect to face about six YEARS of sleep deprivation.
Researchers tracking the sleep of thousands of men and women as their family size increased have found that shuteye hit a low about three months after birth – with the effect strongest in women.
And while parents gradually saw an improvement in their sleep as their firstborn grew, it seems their night-time rest was never quite the same again.
The study found that women lost an hour of sleep per night for the first three months after the birth of a first child, and about 40 minutes of sleep a night in the year after a baby arrived, regardless of whether it was a first child or not.
Dads? They lost about 13 minutes per night.

JASON ALDEAN TO BE HONORED WITH ACM ARTIST OF THE DECADE AWARD –
Three-time reigning ACM Entertainer of the Year Jason Aldean will receive the ACM Dick Clark Artist of the Decade Award at the 54th annual Academy of Country Music Awards, airing live from the MGM Grand Garden Arena in Las Vegas on April 7th. He joins only five other honorees that have received the ACM Artist of the Decade Award, including Marty Robbins in 1969, Loretta Lynn in 1979, Alabama in 1988, Garth Brooks in 1998 and George Strait in 2008.
He sees his music as his legacy, and tells us he hopes that happens for him. [“I mean there’s guys that I go back and listen to their albums. I still pull out albums and listen to them as much as I ever did. And I guess that’s what I’m hoping that someday when this is all over for me, some group of kids hanging out at a farm somewhere with a bonfire going, drinking some beer, and crankin’ up the My Kinda Party Record and singing every word.”]
Jason will perform live during the ACM Awards broadcast, where he is nominated once again for Entertainer of the Year.
Dan + Shay Are Huge Hall & Oates Fans
BILLBOARD talked to DAN + SHAY about the stuff they have to have when they’re on tour. For DAN SMYERS, it’s “pour-over coffee.”
Quote, “I’m very specific about my coffee. It’s called a V60. I brought a separate suitcase for it on the U.K. tour.”
SHAY MOONEY needs his phone and video games. Quote, “‘Golf Clash’ and ‘Clash Royale’ are super addicting games. I don’t play them at home because they’re distracting for my family.”
They each have a go-to drink at the bar. Dan’s is Tequila soda because it’s low-carb and doesn’t make him tired. Shay loves beer, especially Guinness. But if it’s a crazy night, he’ll do shots of tequila.
This question isn’t about the road, but it’s interesting. When asked about their favorite musical duo, they both said, Hall & Oates. Dan admires their “brilliant songwriting chemistry” . . . and Shay says, “their melodies were ahead of their time.”
MIDLAND ‘GRATEFUL’ FOR ACM NODS – (02/26/2019)
Midland was just nominated for two ACM Awards, Vocal Group of the Year and Video of the Year for their latest single, “Burn Out.” Band member Cameron Duddy co-directed the video, which was filmed in one intricate, continuous shot with TK McKamy. [“It’s an incredible honor to be nominated for an ACM award. In this category, it’s a first for sure, and I’m very proud of the video that we made all together. It was definitely a family affair. Everybody threw in. My neighbor was in the video. We called a friend from L.A., Ceion to come out and be the lead female in the video. We got Billy Bob’s to throw in and let us shoot there. So when you get to pull off a video and just make it work is already incredibly gratifying, but then to get a nomination, is just kind of beyond explanation. Super grateful.”] Prior to joining Midland, Cameron directed videos for Bruno Mars, Jennifer Lopez, Britney Spears and more, The ACM awards will be handed out on April 7th and air live from Las Vegas on CBS.
