On Today’s Show

A woman in Muskego, Wisconsin named Molly Salentine was at work late last month, and asked her neighbor if he’d let her dogs out.

He said sure, and he knew she’d see him on her security cameras.  So he decided to have some fun with it by dressing up in a PANDA costume.

Molly watched it later and thought it was funny.  But someone else who was watching it nearby thought he was a BURGLAR and called 911.

They said a giant TEDDY BEAR was robbing someone’s house.  And by the time the guy walked back out in his costume, there were HALF-A-DOZEN cop cars pulling up.

Luckily they realized he wasn’t a burglar, and that was the end of it.  But they just released the 911 audio.

We don’t know the guy’s name, because he’s done every interview in the panda costume.  He says he bought it for $125, and he’s been trying to get his money’s worth.  So he wears it whenever he can, and recently picked up his daughter from school in it.

A Bristol, England woman was baffled when she discovered a Diet Coke can that she’d had delivered was empty – and even more baffled when she found out what it might be worth had she not opened it.  When Dani Andres realized one of the cans was empty, she decided to open it on camera, and shared the clip online.  Just three drops can be seen coming out after she tipped it over.  Afterward, when curiosity got the better of her, she decided to try to find out if there was a market for that type of thing.  A quick search online found empty sealed Coca-Cola cans to be selling for up to US$19,999. Some of the listings have up to 40 watchers, waiting to bid for the “rare” item.

TODAY’S GOOD NEWS

You may have heard the advice from your grandmother to gargle with warm salt water if you notice a tickle in your throat, but it turns out it actually might help you get better if you have a cold. University of Edinburgh researchers looked at 54 patients who had colds.

They asked 30 participants to add 3 grams of Cornish sea salt to a 3.38 ounce bowl of boiling water. After waiting for it to cool, they blocked one nostril and inhaled the water through the other, repeating this for both nostrils three times each. Next, they gargled three times with the remaining salt water.

The other group of participants did nothing to treat their cold. Both groups answered daily questions on their symptoms until two days after they got better. Those who used the salt solution saw their colds end 1.9 days earlier, with their blocked nose clearing 2.7 days sooner than those who let the cold run its course. Sneezing came to an end 1.5 days earlier, and coughing eased 2.4 days faster.

Another test found those who used the salt water were less contagious– specifically they were 30 percent more likely to see a significant reduction in the amount of virus in their body. It works because cells in the body use the chloride in salt to produce hypochlorous acid (HOCI) which is the active ingredient found in bleach.

THE BENEFITS OF NAPPING:
Today is “Napping Day”, when we should all tune out for a while in order to properly adjust to Daylight Saving Time. And in case you aren’t convinced yet, here are the benefits . . .

☞ Improved memory: Sleep allows our brains to comprehend all the things that we have learned, thus improving memory.

☞ Lowers blood pressure:  A typical midday nap can lower blood pressure by an average of 5 mm Hg. That is about equivalent to the drop you would see by undertaking lifestyle changes such as salt and alcohol reduction

☞ Restores alertness:  Studies of NASA pilots and astronauts found that a 40-minute nap improved performance by 34 percent and alertness by 100 percent.

☞ Helps process subconscious thoughts:  After a study, researchers concluded that naps can help people process information subconsciously, which could lead to more goal-oriented behavior.

☞ Improves your mood:  A well-timed midday nap can do wonders for improving your mood.

By the way, a separate study recently found that taking a 50-minute nap each day can lower your blood pressure as much as a low-dose high blood pressure medication.

New Study Found Ordering Dessert First Could Help You Lose Weight

A new study found that ordering your dessert first might help you lose weight.

Researchers monitored what people ate in a cafeteria, and changed up how the desserts were offered. Sometimes they let people choose their dessert first, before they grabbed their meal.  Sometimes they made them grab it after their meal.

And over the course of four days, 70% of people consumed fewer calories when they ordered their dessert first.  Sometimes a LOT less calories.

One of the options was cheesecake.  And when people ordered it first, they consumed an average of 250 fewer calories compared to when they ordered it after their meal.

The researchers say the reason all comes down to our psychology.  Everyone knows dessert isn’t very healthy.  And when we indulge at the beginning of a meal, we compensate by ordering less of everything else.

GARTH BROOKS KICKS OFF STADIUM TOUR, SAYS BEST IS YET TO COME

Garth Brooks launched his Stadium Tour over the weekend in St. Louis, playing for more than 70,000 fans at The Done at America’s Center on Saturday (March 9th).

The crowd was treated to a long list of songs that included fan favorites, chart-topping hits and deep album cuts – starting with “The Road I’m On” and “All Day Long” from his forthcoming album FUN!, Garth and his band burned through 30 songs. Trisha Yearwood also made a surprise appearance.

The St. Louis audience got to see his team try out all sorts of things as they launched the tour, which Garth has said will run for the next three years. He tells us each show will be tweaked and changed to be better than the one before it. [“What they’ll mark this as is, ‘It’s the night that wouldn’t end.’ It won’t be this set-list ever again. We need to find out what works and what doesn’t. What works where. In my head, I’ve got my notebook and I am taking notes with everything that’s going on. And the goal is to kind of beat each show with the next one.”]

Garth’s Stadium Tour rolls on to Glendale, Arizona on March 23rd. So far, he has announced five shows and all five are sold out.

JUSTIN MOORE MAKES SONGWRITING A PRIORITY WITH ‘LATE NIGHTS AND LONGNECKS’ –

Justin Moore’s new album, called Late Nights and Longnecks, includes 10 news songs, all of which were co-written by Justin. He tells us this time around he wanted to flex his songwriting muscles and show the world what he’s capable of. [“Yeah I think there’s some stuff personal to me, but I think there’s also just some more clever writing on this album. I challenged myself to do so on this album because no artist wants to be pigeonholed as this or that, no matter what this or that is. And I wanted to make certain people, not that they don’t, but take me seriously as a songwriter and an artist. So, I think there are definitely moments on this album that hopefully represent that.”]

Late Nights and Longnecks is due out on April 26th.

Justin’s emotional current single, “The Ones That Didn’t Make It Back Home,” is a Top 40 hit and climbing.
