Here’s Why So Many Crime Stories Come Out of Florida
The whole “Florida Man” thing is in the news again after the “Florida Man Challenge” went viral last week. That’s where you find a “Florida Man” story that happened on your birthday, and post it on social media.
But why does the whole “Florida Man” thing exist in the first place? And is Florida REALLY responsible for more stupid crimes than other states? The answer is yes and no. Here are the three main reasons so many crime stories come out of Florida . . .
- It’s really easy to get details on crime stories in Florida. The laws are set up so almost everything is public record. So reporters have quick and easy access to arrest records in Florida. Which isn’t the case in a lot of other states. That’s the MAIN reason there’s so much Florida news.
- Florida has a lot of people. It’s the third most-populated state in America, behind California and Texas. So Florida has a lot going on in general. And it covers a lot of demographics. So there’s a wide variety of nonsense going on.
- “Florida Man” stories are more likely to go viral. More websites pick them up, because the whole “Florida Man” joke exists now. And if the same story happened in Idaho, it might not make national news. Because “Idaho Man” isn’t a thing.
Some people also claim there’s more weirdness in Florida because of all the transplants who move in from other states. The basic, very loose theory is people who move tend to be more impulsive, which leads to more bad choices.

RANDOM REPORT
- No one’s sure exactly which place in New Orleans was the inspiration for “House of the Rising Sun”. There are theories it’s a hotel, club, restaurant, brothel, or jail.
- Before the 1920s, the movie industry wasn’t in Hollywood. They filmed in Jacksonville, Florida in the winter, and New York the rest of the year. But Jacksonville politicians eventually kicked them out, and the whole industry moved to Los Angeles.
- New Zealand is named after a province in the Netherlands called Zeeland, spelled Z-E-E-L-A-N-D. And a Dutch explorer was the first person to spot New Zealand in 1642 . . . you know, not counting all the native people who already lived there.
- The first animated movie ever released in England was “Animal Farm”in 1954. It was funded by the CIA as part of a push to create more anti-communist propaganda.

TODAY’S GOOD NEWS
There’s a place in Raleigh, North Carolina called State Farmers Market Restaurant. The owner’s name is Gypsy Gilliam. And after this, she might ACTUALLY deserve one of those mugs that say “World’s Best Boss” . . .
Last week, she closed up shop and shut down the whole restaurant for a few days, so she could take all 20 of her employees . . . and their families . . . to DISNEY WORLD.
She paid for everything, including hotels . . . tickets to the park . . . and all of their meals. Apparently there were rumors a few months ago that it might happen. But no one believed she’d actually do it.
One employee named Jessica Burr got pretty emotional. She has a five-year-old son, and says she never could have done that for him on her own.
Gypsy didn’t talk on camera, but told the local news that she wouldn’t have a business without her employees. And she wanted them to know how much they’re appreciated.

WHY YOU SHOULDN’T WASH DISHES BY HAND
Washing dishes by hand isn’t exactly fun, and it turns out it’s more economically friendly to use your dishwasher.
According to the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) the standard flow of a kitchen faucet is 2.2 gallons per minutes, and you’d use an estimated 27 gallons by washing an entire dishwasher load by hand.
For comparison, Energy Star dishwashers use no more than 5.5 gallons of water for the entire load (and some use as few as three gallons.) Even older dishwashers only use 10 to 15 gallons of water per cycle. Also, using a dishwasher means your dishes are exposed to high temperatures– from 140 to 155 degrees Fahrenheit.
That sanitizes the dishes, and also means you don’t have to pre-rinse them before putting them inside your dishwasher– just give them a quick scrape into the garbage before loading.
QUESTION…. How do you wash your dishes?

Three Foods That Can Make You Depressed
When you’re feeling down about yourself or life in general, it might be tempting to EAT your feelings. But did you know that some foods could actually TRIGGER depression, or make it worse? Here are three foods you might want to avoid . . .
- Anything with artificial sweeteners. Fake sweeteners like Aspartame might save calories, but they can be terrible for your mood. They can also cause headaches and insomnia, which doesn’t help.
- Junk food. Especially if you eat a lot of it and don’t get enough nutrients in your diet. Your body needs things like magnesium, fatty acids, B-6, and B-12. And if you don’t get enough, it can create a chemical imbalance in your brain.
- Trans Fat. The main source of trans fat is partially hydrogenated oil, which you find in a lot of fried foods. But it’s also in other stuff, including frozen pizza, cake frosting, and microwave popcorn.
Studies have shown that trans fats and other unhealthy fats can lead to depression. One study found people who avoided them and used olive oil more often had a 30% lower risk for depression.

The Patriots will be without Gronk next season. Rob Gronkowski announced on Instagram that he’s retiring. He just said, quote, “It’s time to move forward . . . cheers to all who have been part of this journey, cheers to the past for the incredible memories, and a HUGE cheers to the uncertain of what’s next.”
- The horror movie “Us”was a HUGE box office hit in its opening weekend. It took in $70 million, which is a record for an original horror flick. The previous record of $50.2 million was set by “A Quiet Place” last year.
- A 27-year-old lawyer in New York named Tommy Straub got an electric bill for $38 million.
He lives in a 600 square foot apartment in Queens, and his electric bill is usually more like $74. But when he went to pay it online, it was $37,974,401.35. Our favorite part is that instead of complaining to the power company, he Tweeted about it. . . then complained about all the responses it got.
- No winning ticket was sold for the $35.7 million jackpot in Friday night’s Lotto Max draw.
That means the jackpot for the next draw Friday will be approximately $50 million.
A single ticket sold in Ontario claimed the $5-million jackpot in Saturday night’s Lotto 649 draw.
The draw’s guaranteed $1 million prize also went to an Ontario ticket holder.
The jackpot for the next Lotto 649 draw Wednesday will again be approximately $5 million.
After there was no Powerball winner again on Saturday night (March 23rd), lottery officials say the jackpot for Wednesday’s (March 27th) drawing will be an estimated $750 million, which would be the fourth-largest grand lottery prize in U.S. history. There have now been 25 Powerball drawings in a row without a winner, after the last jackpot in late December.

CHRIS STAPLETON STILL ‘GENUINELY SURPRISED’ TO WIN ANY AWARD
Chris Stapleton goes into this year’s ACM Awards with six nominations (tied with Dan + Shay), including Entertainer of the Year. He’s also nominated twice, as both artist and producer, for Album of the Year for From A Room: Volume 2, an award he won last year for From A Room: Volume 1. He’s also up for Male Vocalist, which he won last year, as well as Song of the Year twice, as both artist and songwriter, for “Broken Halos,” for which he won the CMA Song of the Year Award in November.
(“These things are always fantastic to win, but when you get nominated or invited to these parties, in my estimation, you’ve already won and you’ve already gotten to be far beyond anything, you know, anybody who’s a musician could ever dream of getting to do, and we get to do that every day, we get to live it every day. As far as thinking about going into anything, I’m always genuinely surprised to win anything, and I’m always grateful for it.”]
Chris is also set to perform during the 54th Academy of Country Music Awards, airing live from the MGM Grand Garden Arena in Las Vegas on April 7th at 8 p.m. ET on CBS.

Riley Green Went Hunting With a Guy Who Messaged Him on Social Media
Want to hang out with your favorite country star? Reach out to them on social media. It worked for some guy in Wisconsin who asked RILEY GREEN to go hunting.
Riley says Quote, “I went to Wisconsin this past year and hunted with a guy who just reached out and messaged me on Instagram.
“We went deer hunting up in Buffalo County, which is one of the best counties in the country. I always wanted to go up there and he just kind of stayed on me.”
He was asked if he felt a little nervous going out in the middle of nowhere with a stranger. He said, quote, “I carried a bow and arrow with me, so as long as they gave me some warning they were coming, I would be alright.”
Turns out the guy’s kid went along too, and he played guitar and was a big fan. Riley said they ended up having a great time.

GARTH BROOKS SETS NEW RECORD AT ARIZONA STADIUM TOUR STOP
Garth Brooks has broken the State Farm Stadium attendance record in Glendale, AZ. On Saturday (March 23rd), he played to a sold-out crowd of 77,653. The previous record was held by the Final Four basketball tournament, set on April 1, 2017. He also set a new entertainment record for any single night performance in the history of Arizona.
During a press conference, Garth joked about offering some advice for filling State Farm Stadium, home of NFL legend Larry Fitzgerald and the Arizona Cardinals, in the future. [“I got to rib (Larry) Fitzgerald a lot, you know, because we do have the record over the Cardinals, which I was very proud of. And so I told him – I said, ‘You know what your problem is, Fitz?’ He goes, ‘No – what’s my problem?’ I said, ‘You only put 22 people on the field. We’ve got 10-thousand out there on the field!’ It’s fun!”]
This is the second stop on The Garth Brooks Stadium Tour. On the first stop on March 9th, Garth broke the attendance record in The Dome at America’s Center in St. Louis.
In other Garth news, the superstar has now gone vinyl with his Legacy project. During the first pre-sale, Garth smashed records with 20,000 packages sold in under 18 hours, that’s 420,000 vinyl records. Forbes noted, “To put this in context, The Beatles were the number-one vinyl artist in 2018 with 321,000 sales over 12 months.” The second 24 hours pre-sale window saw people secure an additional 300,000 vinyl albums.
