On Today’s Show

Finally, a useful reason to post a selfie! The “Trashtag Challenge” is a new viral challenge and its goal is to make the world a cleaner place.  The idea behind the Trashtag Challenge is to inspire people on Twitter, Instagram, and Reddit to take a walk outside and clean up any litter they stumble upon.  People are encouraged to seek out a litter-filled area or overflowing trashcan, clean it up, and then share before and after photos online (usually in the form of a selfie) using the hashtag #trashtag.

The hashtag has been around for years, but the movement has gained traction again recently, thanks to recent reposts explaining the challenge.

Boxing is being called the best workout of 2019.  But not the dingy gyms where you saw Rocky sweating it out.  Today’s boxing workouts are taking place in fitness studios, but instead of bikes, the room is filled with bags hanging from the ceiling.  Celebrities were among the first to hop the current wave of boxing-as-fitness trend, showing that you don’t have to hit people to get a great workout from boxing.  The combination of inviting workout spaces, trainers who aren’t bullies, and circuit-style classes is said to be what is attracting many who otherwise would never consider donning a pair of 14-ounce gloves.  Aspiring sluggers spend about half of each session clobbering the bags, and the other half executing strength exercises using body weight, dumbells and light weights.  Without the combat, boxing is said to still be a killer workout, improving your strength, flexibility, speed, balance, agility, endurance and coordination.  Classes can cost in the neighborhood of $36.

TODAY’S GOOD NEWS

A 61-year-old guy in New Jersey named Chris Ferry got a text message from someone wishing him a happy birthday, and he didn’t recognize the number.  So he texted back, and they said they got his phone number off a BILLBOARD.

It turned out Chris’s two sons secretly bought ad space on a billboard in Atlantic City.  And they put a photo of him on it, along with his number and a message that said, “Wish My Dad Happy Birthday . . . Love, Your Sons.”

They didn’t tell him about it, so he didn’t find out until people started calling.  And now he’s dealing with HUNDREDS of calls, texts, and voicemails a day.

He says he’s been averaging about one text a minute, and one phone call every two or three minutes.  And it’s not just people in Atlantic City.  One of his sons has 150,000 followers on social media.  So people from all over the WORLD are calling.

His sons weren’t sure if putting his number out there was a good idea.  But they wanted to do something special for his birthday, so they decided to “go big or go home.”  And yes, Chris sees the humor in it.

Are These the Keys to Happiness?

According to a recent survey, money is NOT one of the top ten keys to happiness.

Spending quality time with your family was chosen as the #1 key to happiness.  To be fair though, it’s a lot easier to make time when you’ve got plenty of money in the bank.  Here are the top ten keys to happiness, according to the study . . .

  1. Spending quality time with your family.
  2. Having time to yourself.
  3. Spending time with friends.  So the top three are all about having more free time.
  4. Being outdoors more.
  5. Sleeping well.

HERE’S HOW SITTING ALL DAY AFFECTS YOUR BRAIN, NOT JUST YOUR BODY

You already know that you spend too many hours each day sitting, and how bad that can be for your physical health, but it is also bad for your brain.

Beth Shaw, registered nutritional counselor, says, “[Sitting’s] negative impact on blood flow to the head is actually linked to the deterioration of the part of the brain that helps us retain both old memories and new information.”

Another expert says it’s not odd if you find yourself zoning out after hours of sitting, as the lack of movement means you’re “missing out on a potential neurotransmitter boost that comes with varied movement.”

Finally, not moving enough can lead to to simply feeling sluggish– so get moving.

Chase definitely sees fatherhood in his future, but it’s on the backburner for now, as he tells us exclusively:[“I’ve always wanted that. Basically I’m 33 right now. I’ll get married in my 30’s. Let’s just call it that. I got some time. I’m in no rush. I want kids (but) I’m in no rush. For me it’s all about music right now, cause I get to hang out and play with them right now, so for me it’s all about music, what’s next following ‘Eyes On You’ and who knows. I don’t know what it’s gonna look like but it’s gonna be fun.”]
