A homeless Nigerian child refugee who recently won the New York State chess championship now has a place to live, thanks to thousands of people who stepped forward to help him and his family. Tanitoluwa Adewumi is just eight years old. He and his family fled Nigeria in 2017 in fear of Boko Haram terrorists and obtained asylum in New York City.  Since learning to play chess a little more than a year ago, Adewumi earned first place at a school tournament for kindergarten to third-grade players this month. A GoFundMe campaign set up in his name raised more than $246,000 from 4,795 donors in just 10 days. The family plans to donate 10 percent of the money to the church that helped them get to the U.S., and they say they want to help other African immigrants settling in the US.

There’s a 26-year-old woman in Wales who has Aquagenic Urticaria . . . she’s allergic to water.  There are only 30 known cases in medical history.  It only started for her after she gave birth, and had a difficult delivery.  Now she gets hives, itching, and pain when she comes into contact with water.  So she showers quickly, and gets panic attacks when it rains.

TODAY IS……………….

  • “April Fool’s Day”. Many say the custom of playing practical jokes on this day originated with the reform of the calendar when “New Year’s Day” was moved from April 1 to January 1. Those who clung to the old “New Year’s Day” were scoffed at as ‘fools’ and sent fake party invitations and prank gifts. That tradition began in France around 1564

1976 [43] Steve Wozniak and Steve Jobs found ‘Apple Computer’ in the garage of Jobs’ parents house in Cupertino, California

2004 [15] Google introduces ‘gmail’ to the public (at the time, many think it is an April Fools joke)

2008 [11] YouTube tricks users with the popular bait-and-switch prank called ‘Rickrolling’ by featuring video links that actually lead to Rick Astley’s ‘Never Gonna Give You Up’ music video.

NASA and ESA Are Paying Volunteers to Lie in Bed for 60 Days to Test Artificial Gravity

Regardless of what your own personal idea of a dream job might be, you have to admit that being paid to lounge around in bed sounds pretty awesome.

That’s exactly what NASA and ESA want a crew of volunteers to do in order to test the potential benefits of artificial gravity for long-haul space missions. The research will require a total of 24 participants to remain in bed for two full months.

Volunteers will be seated at a slight incline so that their legs are slightly higher than their heads, reducing blood flow to the extremities, thus causing muscle deterioration.

Along with being able to spend virtually every hour of the day watching TV, movies, playing video games, or reading, the team is paying a handsome sum of nearly $19,000 to each individual.

That’s a decent chunk of change for two months of “work,” but even if the study seems laid back on the surface, there are surely some psychological challenges of remaining in the same room, lying slightly backwards, for 60 days (and another 30 days of recovery afterwards).

We wish the volunteers the best of luck!

TODAY’S GOOD NEWS

An 18-year-old kid near Vegas named Shaun Mabanta recently found out he made it onto the prom court for his senior prom.  But he dropped out for a pretty cool reason.

He’s friends with another kid named Edgar Hernandez, who has autism.  And he wanted HIM to be in the running. So he dropped out and aggressively started campaigning to get votes for him.  And earlier this month, Edgar WON.

They announced the king and queen at their prom on March 16th.  And when they said Edgar’s name, he got super emotional.  He even cried a little bit after the other kids started cheering his name.

Shaun says he did it because he knows what it’s like to feel different, and he used to have major issues with anxiety.  Plus, Edgar always goes from table to table at lunch and says hi to everyone.  So Shaun felt like he DESERVED to win. Edgar says the whole thing really did make him feel special, and that Shaun’s a “good friend” for doing it.

BEDTIME STORY:
Everyone knows that it is a good idea for parents to read to their children. But it turns out that the kiddies get more out of it when the parent reads a book — rather than off an electronic tablet.

Researchers at the University of Michigan studied 37 sets of parents and their toddlers between the ages of two and three.  Participants were analyzed while reading stories, either from a tablet with visual and sound effects, from a tablet without visual and sound effects, or from a traditional book.

What they found was that parents made the greatest number of statements to engage their toddlers when they read from the printed page.  They also tended to read more of the story if it was on the printed page.

LUKE COMBS RECALLS ‘FLABBERGASTING’ PHONE CALL FROM CARRIE UNDERWOOD – (04/01/2019)

Luke Combs is still coming to grips with the fact that he is an ACM award-winner. He was suprised last week with a phone call from Carrie Underwood, who shared the good news that he had been named New Male Artist. At the time, the call was caught on video by someone on Luke’s bus, which was shared on social media.

Luke tells us, however, there was a misunderstanding, as he recalls getting that life-changing phone call: [“I’m sitting on the bus making a toaster scrambler — actually everybody thought it was a toaster strudel, it was actually a toaster scrambler. There is a difference. Look it up — and, I get this call from Carrie Underwood of all people. I don’t know if that was maybe the first time that we have ever interacted in any way, shape or form, so it was quite flabbergasting to say the least, so I was like absolutely stunned she told me I won an ACM award for best new male artist and I was like, ‘Well this is a neat start to the day. Not only do I get a delicious toaster scrambler but I’ve got an ACM award.’ That’s awesome.”]

The ACM Awards take place on Sunday (April 7th) in Las Vegas, where Luke is also up for Male Artist of the Year. He is set to perform during the broadcast, which will air on CBS beginning at 8 p.m. ET.

George Strait Loved Having His Six-Year-Old Grandson Record with Him

GEORGE STRAIT’s new album “Honky Tonk Time Machine” is out today.  As you may have heard, his six-year-old grandson Harvey sings on the track GOD AND COUNTRY MUSIC.  And it sounds like the kid really did put in the work.

QUOTE, “It took us several takes.  I went in there and I kinda did it with him, and then I would just back out and leave him.  But he was all for it.  He was all about doing it.  He got really involved in that record.  For six years old, that’s pretty good.”

Carrie Underwood’s Son Calls Her “Carefree Underwear”

I’m sure CARRIE UNDERWOOD has spent a lifetime hearing people call her “underwear” instead of Underwood.  But I bet she never thought her own flesh and blood would join in.  Yep, four-year-old Isaiah’s getting in on the action.

Yesterday she TWEETED, “My own kid just called me ‘Carefree Underwear.’  This is basically elementary school all over again.”

She did get sympathy from COLTON UNDERWOOD of “The Bachelor” who saw her post and commented, “Try ‘Cotton Underwear’ . . . elementary school was a rough time for me.”  Then she added, quote, “Glad to know I’m not in this alone.”
