On Today’s Show
May 1, 2019 9:30 amA 24-year-old guy in Wisconsin won the third-largest lottery jackpot in U.S. history. He hit the Powerball last month for $768 million, and took the lump sum of $477 million. He says he felt weirdly lucky when he bought the ticket, and screamed for five to ten minutes when he won. He says he wants to travel the world, and doesn’t care about fancy stuff . . . but now he’s gonna buy some fancy stuff.

Researchers at the University of Iowa say there’s scientific evidence to back up the old adage “breakfast is the most important meal of the day.”
A study found those who skip breakfast have an 87 per cent higher risk of dying by heart attack or stroke.
Scientists say not eating in the morning can increase your appetite and cause you to overeat later in the day.
They also found breakfast skippers are more likely to have other unhealthy habits, like heavy drinking, smoking, or lack of exercise.

TODAY’S GOOD NEWS
There’s a church in Wichita that usually spends a good chunk of money promoting its Easter services each year to bring more people in. But this year they did something different.
They took all that money . . . along with other funds they’d set aside . . . and used it to pay off medical debt for 1,600 random families in Kansas.
They bought up $2.2 MILLION worth of debt for pennies on the dollar. Then they sent out letters to all 1,600 families. And they let them know they didn’t have to worry about paying it back anymore.
The letter said, quote, “We’re Pathway Church. We may never meet you. But as an act of kindness . . . your debt has been forgiven.”
It’s not clear how much they spent to buy up all that debt. But John Oliver did the same thing on his HBO show a few years ago, and bought $15 million worth of medical debt for 60 grand.
So the church probably spent around $10,000 to pay off $2.2 million.

Four Security Mistakes You Might Be Making
A new survey found 62% of IT workers think YOU are your #1 security threat . . . because you probably do things like use weak passwords, and open dangerous emails. Here are four more common mistakes you might be making . . .
- You’re not protecting your phone’s lock screen. The worst thing you can do is not use a password at all. Because if you lose your phone, someone can get your info. And you probably have a lot of saved passwords in there.
But also be careful about people looking over your shoulder to steal your password. Ideally, your phone should have a six-digit code, not four. And don’t do a “pattern unlock” where you connect dots on a grid. A study found they’re much easier to guess just by imitating your movements.
- You’re not using two-step authentication. That’s where you have to verify your identity again before you can access an app or website. Usually by getting a password through text or email. It’s easy to set up, and it makes things a lot safer.
- You share too much info on social media. Things like your pet’s name or your parents’ anniversary are common security questions. So be careful what you post online, because hackers can use it against you.
- You use free WiFi at places like Starbucks. Public networks make it easier on hackers, especially if there’s no password. So if you use free WiFi a lot, think about buying a VPN subscription. It gives you an added layer of security by masking your IP address.

ROLLER COASTER:
On May 3, visitors to Canada’s largest theme park will get the chance to experience the fastest, tallest and longest “dive” roller coaster in the world.
The “Yukon Striker” is the new star attraction at Canada’s Wonderland. The Yukon Striker features a 90-degree drop into an underwater tunnel.
The roller coaster is 75m tall, 1,105m long and reaches 130km/h (81mph). It also has a 360-degree loop, just in case you live through that 90-degree drop.
The coaster is the central attraction at the park’s new “Frontier Canada” area, which features a gold-rush theme.

Ancestry.com Is Fixing Its Results . . .
If you sent in your DNA to Ancestry.com and immediately reshaped your entire identity around the results . . . well, I hope you’re ready to reboot yourself AGAIN.
Ancestry just announced that with all the data they have now, they’ve been able to really refine their results. And that means they can narrow down your DNA even better than before, and they’ll be sending you those results soon.
But it also means the results you originally got might change. Like, you might’ve thought you were part Viking because they estimated you were 9% Scandinavian. Well now, maybe they figured out that DNA was actually from England.
A spokesperson from Ancestry says they gave people warnings this could happen . . . they say that their results are an ESTIMATE that can change as more data comes in.
But people still aren’t very happy with it. One woman told reporters that the update dropped her son from 31% Spanish to just 11% . . . and, quote, “It’s quite upsetting.”
“His ethnicity is massively different now. I haven’t accepted it as I don’t agree with the results.”

New York Yankees’ CC Sabathia became the 17th MLB player to reach 3,000 career strikeouts last night (April 30th). The 38-year-old entered the game against the Arizona Diamondbacks with 2,997 strikeouts, and reached the mark by striking out three in the second inning. Sabathia, who is now in his 19th and what he’s said will be his last MLB season, is only the third left-hander to get 3,000 strikeouts, along with Randy Johnson and Steve Carlton. He’s the first pitcher to get to 3,000 since John Smoltz in 2008.
- An amusement park at the Jersey shore was doing a safety check on a rollercoaster two weeks ago, when two crash test dummies flew off and damaged the roof of a hotel next door. Apparently the dummies were filled with water, but they sprung leaks, so they deflated and slipped out of their straps. So the vice president of the park says the roller coaster is safe, and they’ve been operating it normally it since then.
- The Idaho Potato Commission has a giant, fake potato they haul around the country to do promotions. And they recently replaced it . . . so a woman took the original and turned it into a hotel. It’s one big room, with a bathroom next door in a grain silo. It’s 25 miles outside Boise, and you can rent it starting next month on Airbnb. Here’s the woman behind it, and the CEO of the Idaho Potato Commission.

CARRIE UNDERWOOD SAYS HER OPENING ACTS BEING FEMALE IS ‘ADDED BONUS’ –
Tonight’s (Wednesday, May 1st) the night! Carrie Underwood kicks off her first tour in almost three years, the Cry Pretty 360 Tour, in Greensboro, NC. Her coveted opening slots went to two other female acts — Maddie & Tae and Runaway June — and while Carrie is always happy to support women, she tells us these ladies in particular were what the tour needed. [“I wanted talented people on stage that I respected musically, that I thought sound like they’re supposed to sound (laughs), that the audience would enjoy, that would be pleasant to be around. I mean, that’s just kind of how it worked out. I chose some ladies to go out with us, but it’s because they’re super talented. It was mainly about just putting together a great show. It’s an added bonus that they’re all women, but I believe in these women and hopefully they’ll just continue to have more and more doors open for them cause they deserve it.”]
Fans can expect all three acts to collaborate at least once during the show.
The Cry Pretty 360 Tour continues on through opening weekend in Birmingham, AL and North Little Rock, AR.
MIDLAND’S BUS IS TOO PACKED FOR TOYS
Tour toys are something that a lot of artists treasure while out on the road, like motorcycles, workout equipment and other ways to pass the time while parked at a venue. ForMidland, the luxury of toting such so-called “toys” is still a ways off as Mark Wystrach, Cameron Duddy and Jess Carson tell us: [“We don’t have the room. We’re still a young band, like, we got a tour bus, a proper tour bus, just like a little over a year ago and we’re packed in there. We’ve got eight guys in the bus. (Cameron) We always do include baseball mitts and baseballs. (Mark) Yeah, we’ve got that for the summertime. (Jess) Footballs, baseballs. (Mark) But we’re always fantasizing about the things that we’d like to bring out on the road. I would like to have just a wave park that I could travel with. (Cam) Yeah, that would be cool. (Mark) Or a helicopter on top of the tour bus. (Jess) Until we can afford that, we’re gonna continue . . . Mark just stands on a surfboard in the parking lot and I just throw bottles of water at him. (Mark) He doesn’t even take the water out of the bottles. He just throws plastic bottles at me. And he knows I hate plastic bottles, too.”]
