On Today’s Show
May 6, 2019 9:30 amThe Kentucky Derby has been around for 145 years, but on Saturday it made history . . . and NOT in a good way.
For the first time in more than 50 years, the fastest horse . . . the one that crossed the finish line first . . . DIDN’T win. That horse, Maximum Security, was disqualified for swerving into the path of two of the other horses. That’s a no-no. Apparently.
Officials spent 22 minutes looking into it, and ultimately UPHELD the objection . . . disqualified Maximum Security . . . and named the runner-up Country House the winner.
Country House took the $1.86 million prize . . . By the way, Country House entered with 65-1 odds . . . making him the 2nd-longest to win the Kentucky Derby in the 145-year history of the race. Back in 1913, Donerail won, despite having 91.5-1 odds.
In 145 years, only ONE other Kentucky Derby winner was disqualified. That was back in 1968, when a horse named Dancer’s Image won . . . but was stripped of his title several days later after the horse failed a post-race DRUG TEST.
This was the first time a horse was ever disqualified on-site, for breaking the rules

Officials in Albuquerque are warning people who went to a spa last year and got ‘vampire facials’ . . . that’s where you get plasma from your own blood injected into your face, to look younger. The spa’s closed now, but apparently, they didn’t clean the syringes correctly, and two people contracted HIV. Here are some locals and a doctor from another spa.

Average Couch Has Been Napped on 36 Times, and Has $1.55 Hiding in It
A new survey of 2,000 Americans found the average sofa is six years old . . . and has $1.55 in change hiding in the cushions.
It’s also been napped on 36 times (seems low) . . . CRIED on 17 times . . . gone through 32 extended hangouts with friends and family . . . and been through 21 sick days.
Here are four more stats from the survey . . .
- 70% of Americans said they like their current couch and think it’s comfortable.
- On average, people said you should graduate to more “grown up” furniture by the time you’re 28 years old.
- The top furniture purchases that make us feel grown up are a dining room table and chairs, a nice couch, and a good mattress.
- And the top pieces of furniture we’d like to replace are our mattress, our couch, our bed frame, our dining room table, and our TV stand.

TODAY’S GOOD NEWS
An 88-year-woman in Vancouver has been waving to schoolchildren from her window for the past 12 years, and now that she’s moving into an assisted living home, hundreds of the children who knew her want to say goodbye.
Tinney Davidson has lived in Comox since 2007, when she and her husband bought a house near Highland Secondary School. Every morning, as students walked in front of their house on their way to class, she would offer up a friendly wave. Many of the kids waved back, and thus it became somewhat of a ritual.
“I just liked the look of the children they all looked in and I thought, ‘If they’re looking in, I’ll wave to them,’ and that’s how it started.”
After her husband passed away, Tinney maintained the daily practice. The children even sent her Valentine’s Day cards and gifts in 2016 to demonstrate just how much they appreciated her.
“You know, it’s just, ‘Love you, you’re wonderful, you’re amazing,’ love and kisses and everything else,” she said about the gesture.
When the children became aware that “Waving Granny” was moving into an assisted living home, they again showed up to repay her for her kindness. 400 students at the nearby secondary school congregated on Davidson’s front lawn to say goodbye.
The children gave her flowers and let her know just how much her kindness has meant to them.

WHAT NURSES WEAR….
Jessica Anderson ran the London Marathon trying to beat the world record for the fastest marathon time for a woman wearing a nurse’s uniform.
Jess, who is a nurse herself, beat the current record – of three hours, eight minutes and 54 seconds – by 22 seconds. This wasn’t enough to make her a record breaker though.
That’s because she did it wearing medical scrubs – and Guinness World Records said this does not meet its criteria for a nurse’s uniform.
When Jess was training for the marathon she realized that the record time for the fastest nurse to run a marathon was very close to her personal best.
She told Guinness World Records that she wanted to challenge the record and sent in photos of her in the uniform, so officials could track her during the race.
But she was told she would not be eligible for a record if she ran in her scrubs because they did not “meet the criteria”. An official explained to her: “For the purposes of this record, the nurse’s uniform must include: a blue or white nurse dress, a white pinafore apron, a traditional white nurse’s cap. Tights are optional.”
She says these costume rules would apply to men or women wanting to run in a nurse’s uniform for a record bid. Jess wrote back asking them to reconsider what she calls this “outdated and frankly quite sexist” attitude for future races.
She pointed out that almost all the nurses on her ward wear scrubs.
A representative for Guinness World Records explained to Jess that this is too similar to their requirements for a doctor’s uniform: scrubs, white coat and stethoscope.
While Jess knows this might not seem like the biggest problem in the world, but she thinks it “really has an impact on the public perception of nursing”.
She says it’s a modern profession that is open to both men and women, so the idea that nurses have to wear a dress and pinafore is “baffling”.

Army Vet Lost 44 Pounds Only Drinking Beer for Lent, Inspired by Monks
An Ohio man didn’t eat any food for 46 days. Instead, he spent Lent downing craft beer.
Del Hall, who says he drinks beer for a living, works at Cincinnati’s Fifty West Brewing Company. Hall wasn’t buzzed because he spaced out the alcoholic beverages throughout each day. The army veteran lost 44 pounds over the course of about 40 days after being inspired to try an old Catholic tradition.
“Being a beer guy, you always hear this story about the monks in Bavaria, like in the 1600s, that they gave up all solid food for Lent and they only drank this special kind of beer that they called doppelbock. It’s got a lot of nutrients in it, a lot of carbohydrates, and a lot of sugar.”
He was constantly monitored by a doctor during his fast to make sure his health was sound. “My health is so much better. My blood pressure. My cholesterol. Everything has improved over what I was eating before of the standard American diet,”.

COMPLAINT DEPARTMENT:
It turns out that there is an upside to all that complaining you hear from your co-workers the minute the boss leaves the room. It shows you who your friends are.
A communications professor at the University of Arizona who researches workplace friendships, says the moment when you realize you can openly complain about work with a co-worker is the moment at which you tip over into “friend” territory.
Like all friendships which involve a shared trust, workplace friendships get more serious when co-workers feel free to “get real” and be honest with each other about the issues they are facing.
Sure, unbridled negativity at work can result in poor morale, but having someone to confide in about workplace issues can also be a positive thing if it results in closer relationships with co-workers.

Luke Combs Had to Take Down a Snobby New York Salesperson
In case you haven’t heard this, LUKE COMBS told a great story about the time he wanted to buy a Rolex at a store in New York City, but the salesperson wouldn’t take him seriously.
He asked for a specific Rolex model and she made it sound like you can’t just walk in and get one of those. He knew it was total B.S. so they went back and forth with her saying, “a lot of people want that model” and him answering, “that’s why I’m here.”
Then he got real. Quote, “So I told her, ‘It’s fine. I can go get it somewhere else. I’m playing Madison Square Garden tonight and I really wanted to wear it on stage.’ [Then she said,] ‘Well, I think we might have one in the back.'”
