On Today’s Show
May 7, 2019 9:30 amThere’s a 40-year-old guy named Jermaine Nichols in Scarborough, and he called 911 recently because he needed to be RESCUED. Apparently, he was out hiking and got stuck on a steep cliff. But his phone died before he could give them his specific location.
So firefighters and paramedics drove up the cliffs to hunt for him. And while they searched . . . he suddenly appeared, hopped into a fire truck, and tried to STEAL IT.
But Police were also part of the rescue effort . . . so he was quickly stopped and arrested.
He’s been charged with attempted theft and failure to comply.

A guy in California lost his prosthetic leg while he was skydiving last week. Somehow it came off during the jump and landed in a lumber yard. The employees took it to the cops, and they were able to track the guy down.
Turns out he originally lost his leg two years ago . . . in a skydiving accident. But he plans to keep doing it.

Alaska Woman Wins $300K Guessing When Ice Breaks
An Alaska woman won $311,652 for guessing the exact date and time a tripod would fall into the water after ice gave way on the Tanana River in Nenana, Alaska.
Patricia Andrew predicted the ice would go out on April 14 at 12:21 a.m. Alaska standard time — making her the only contestant to guess the correct time.
“She had no clue,” said Cherrie Forness, who runs the Ice Classic. “She probably didn’t remember what she put on her ticket.”
This is the first time since 2013 the ice classic had only one winner.
If no one chooses the exact time of the tripod falling into the water, the person who guesses the minute closest to the actual time wins.

TODAY’S GOOD NEWS
A Mom in Michigan named Sharonda Wilson has been trying to get her bachelor’s degree at Ferris State University, and just graduated.
Meanwhile, her son Stephan ALSO just graduated from Central Michigan. And both of their commencement ceremonies were this past Saturday at different schools.
So Sharonda could only go to one. And she chose to see her SON graduate.
Now here’s the good part: Somehow, the president of CMU found out about it right before the ceremony. And he got on the phone with the president at Ferris State.
Then in the middle of Stephan’s graduation, the president of CMU surprised them by presenting BOTH of them with their degrees. So they got to graduate together.
He gave Sharonda her own cap . . . awarded her degree on behalf of FSU . . . and asked her to please move her tassel to the left side of her cap.
CMU posted a video. And Stephan’s reaction is the best part because of how excited he is for her.

George Strait on Concerts Then and Now
GEORGE STRAIT’S new album is called “Honky Tonk Time Machine”, and obviously it’s a topic he knows a lot about . . . because he played a ton of them all throughout Texas before he filled arenas.
He says each one has a great feel, and they’re all intimate. But he says playing shows is a lot different now. Quote, “In those days, the crowds weren’t standing at the front of the stage. They were dancing.
“That was what it was all about. If they weren’t dancing, you probably weren’t doing too good.”

THERE’S A DOWNSIDE TO BEING ORGANIZED
It’s very trendy to be organized these days, and that’s mostly a good thing. A 2013 study found that being in a tidy space drives people to make healthy choices and to follow “conventional” thinking, and working in a messy space creates creativity and new ideas.
Now Harvard University researchers say the desire to organize can be a sign of underlying mental angst or upset.
Study leader Martin Lang says his finding linked anxiety to the performance of repetitive, ritualistic behaviors, and that cleaning up and organizing definitely fits the bill. In a sense organizing is good, as it can bring a sense of comfort and control to those having a rough time, but on the flip side, spending a huge amount of time and energy organizing signals a problem.
Michelle Newman, a professor of psychology, adds, “Organizing becomes pathological when it’s interfering with your ability to focus or function, or it’s overly distressing.”

PLEASE WAIT WHILE JAVA IS INSTALLED:
If you are a coffee drinker, you know what it’s like in the morning before you’ve had your first cup. But did you know that feeling of needing a cup has been classified as a mental health disorder?
The new edition of a Psychiatric mental health manual includes a new coffee-related diagnosis: “caffeine withdrawal,” which describes the symptoms of stopping or dramatically reducing one’s daily coffee habit. It notes that the symptoms of caffeine withdrawal include fatigue, headache and difficulty focusing.
A spokesperson says there is some logic to treating caffeine withdrawal as a type of mental health issue. Caffeine is a stimulant.
However as one psychologist point out that a mental disorder diagnosis of “caffeine withdrawal” should be made only if symptoms cause “clinically significant distress” or impair a person’s daily functioning.

Keith Urban Had to Take an Uber to a Show in Florida
KEITH URBAN was forced to take an Uber to his show in West Palm Beach, Florida on Sunday. He was supposed to fly in but bad weather wouldn’t allow the plane to land so he ended up in Miami, about 75 miles away.
And he couldn’t get a small plane out of there either because planes don’t take off when there’s lightning . . . and that just kept coming. So, he took an Uber, and he got lucky because his driver was not afraid to put the pedal to the metal.
During the ride Keith downloaded an app that showed how fast they were going and it topped out at 103 mph. He was late, but at least he got there. When he hit the stage he told the crowd the story, and then thanked the driver.

CARRIE UNDERWOOD’S ‘CRY PRETTY TOUR’ STAGE ALLOWS HER TO CONNECT WITH FANS –
Last Wednesday, Carrie Underwood will kick off The Cry Pretty Tour 360. She will hit the stage at the Greensboro Coliseum for the very first show, and she tells us she really prefers the in-the-round stage setup that she’s bringing back. [“I absolutely love my stage being in the middle of the arena. There is something about it that I feel so much more connected with every single person in that building, and I remember with the Storyteller tour, I was like, ‘Ooh, I hope this is going to be okay. I’m changing everything up,’ but there was just some connection happening. I could see everybody in the arena, every single face.”]
The Cry Pretty Tour 360 also features Maddie & Tae and Runaway June.
