A nine-year-old autistic boy in Boston was so impressed by a performance at the symphony last week, he said “wow” in the quiet moment after they’d finished a piece by Mozart . . . and the whole auditorium heard, laughed, and cheered. They asked the public to help find him hoping to reward the sweet sentiment with a trip to meet the artistic director

French adventurer Jean-Jacques Savin has made it across the Atlantic Ocean—128 days after he set off from the Canary Islands in a giant orange barrel. The 72-year-old finished his 2,930-mile journey across the Atlantic last week when he arrived on the Dutch Caribbean island of St. Eustatius. He traveled across the ocean at an average speed of around two miles an hour with no engine or sails, relying solely on winds and ocean currents. He says he passed the time inside the barrel, which is 10 feet long and seven feet wide, by watching fish through the portholes.

MAKING A BACKUP:
An environmental group is asking for the government to step in after a study showed that there is no such thing as a “flushable” wipe.

Friends of the Earth would like Canada’s Competition Bureau to launch an inquiry after a Ryerson University study tested 23 wipes labelled “flushable” and found that none of them actually lived up to the claim.

Two of the “flushable” wipes partially disintegrated in drains, and the other 21 didn’t disintegrate at all.  Some of them took six flushes just to get through a toilet.

Single-use wipes have become a serious concern for operators of municipal sewage systems, clogging pipes and causing millions of dollars in damage and clean-up costs every year.

FLUSHING MASCOTS

Vancouver has launched a video campaign introducing mascots Poo and Pee to drive home a message about improper flushing.

They are part of their annual Unflushables campaign to remind people about items that should not be flushed because they can clog city sewers and your pipes.

Problem items that can lead to trouble with municipal and residential pipes when flushed include dental floss, hair, paper towels, tampons and applicators.

A spokesperson for Metro Vancouver said the costumes cost less than $10,000 to make. The cost of improper items being flushed, he added, adds up to $250 million across Canada.

TODAY’S GOOD NEWS

Two women who found themselves at the very end of the Pittsburgh Marathon last weekend walked away as friends.

In a picture that’s since gone viral Laura Mazur and Jessica Robertson were photographed by Dan Heckert as they finished the marathon holding each other’s hand.

The two women — Mazur running her 12th marathon and Robertson, her first — were the last two runners and were helping each other finish, more than seven hours after the race had started. Before the race, the two had been strangers. Robertson said she and Mazur had promised each other not to leave the other and to cross the finish line together, no matter what.

Those that stayed cheered them on as they crossed the line. And, first responders who were on the other side of the finish line clapped for them. Mazur thanked the city for keeping the race intact that day and letting her and Robertson finish.

She also thanked Robertson for being beside her the whole time that day. “I’ll hold your hand anytime, honey,” she said.

HOW OFTEN SHOULD YOU WASH YOUR REUSABLE WATER BOTTLE?
Now that you’ve been convinced that you are doing the planet a solid by carrying a reusable water bottle, think about this:

Germs thrive in moisture – that includes bacteria, viruses and fungi. Miryam Z. Wahrman, PhD, professor of biology at William Paterson University and author of “The Hand Book: Surviving in a Germ-Filled World”, says that you should wash your reusable bottle at least once per day – every day.

She says at the end of the day, empty your bottle (never “top it off” by mixing in fresh water with old water, as this will allow impurities to remain…and thrive), then wash it with dish soap and water, rinse it well to get rid of the soap, and refill it with fresh water.

TRAINING FOR YOUR FIRST MARATHON IS AS GOOD FOR YOUR BLOOD PRESSURE AS DRUGS

If you’re out of shape running is pretty darn hard, but taking up running is really good for your heart. Researchers found that people who ran 13 miles a week for six months and were older or slower gained the biggest health boost from doing so. Over a lifetime, running could reduce age-related artery stiffness and the risk of stroke by up to ten percent.

The scientists found those who trained for six months and completed their first marathon had a four-year reduction in arterial age, and a significant drop in their blood pressure.

Researchers say, “You don’t have to be an elite athlete to gain the benefits from marathon running.

WOMAN RUNS 18 MILES OF LONDON MARATHON ON BROKEN ANKLE

Siobhan O’Keeffe trained four months to run the London Marathon on Sunday (April 28th), but she broke her ankle at mile eight.

She said she thought she’d sprained it, and continued on, but the pain got increasingly worse. When she stopped at a medic tent her ankle was wrapped, and she was advised to stop, but she continued on.

She ended up completing the marathon in six hours, 14 minutes, and headed to the emergency room the next morning. She adds that an orthopedic surgeon said he had no idea how she ran with the trauma break– she was given a cast and may be evaluated for surgery.

CHRIS YOUNG CELEBRATES 11TH NUMBER ONE HIT . . . WITHOUT A TATTOO –

Chris Young celebrated his career 11th Number One hit, “Hangin’ On,” with a party in Nashville at songwriting organization BMI yesterday (Monday, April 29th) afternoon. Chris was joined by his co-writers Corey Crowder and Josh Hoge, who together have written now four Number One hits. In fact, after writing their first hit, “I’m Comin’ Over,” the three made a deal that they would all get tattoos if the song climbed to Number One. Josh and Chris tell us that Chris didn’t hold up his end of the bargain. [“We made a pact that every Number One . . . (Chris) I don’t have a tattoo. (Josh) He doesn’t, and so I said, ‘If “I’m Comin’ Over” goes Number One, let’s all get a tattoo.’ ‘Cool.’ Well here we are four later and Chris is still bare-skinned. (Chris) But no I don’t have one yet.”]

Chris’ latest single, “Raised On Country,” is racing up the charts. He revealed yesterday that Raised On Country will also be the title of his upcoming album.
