On Today’s Show

A 43-year-old dad in Florida recently got on Snapchat, because his nephew wanted him to.  And this is what happened.  On Tuesday, he thought it would be funny to do a video where he tried to sell his seven-month-old baby at a pawn shop.  But the owner called the cops, and the dad ended up on the local news.  Then when he called the police to straighten it out, dozens of cops showed up at his house.  He’s not facing charges.

A woman living in Evanston, Illinois was preparing to unload her washing machine when she found a snake slithering among the wet clothing. She called for help on Wednesday (May 8th) after discovering the creature. Local officers safely captured the very clean snake and took it to the Chicago Exotics Animal Hospital. One responding officer added, “I could smell it and could tell that it had actually been through a cycle. Smelled like Downy.” The animal turned out to be a pet named Penelope that escaped from her owner, who lives in Kamencic. The snake was returned to its owner.

In a statement, Lisa Katz and Tracey Pakosta, presidents of scripted programming at NBC Entertainment, said: “In a television landscape with nearly 500 original scripted series, there are very few, if any, that have the critical and cultural impact of “This Is Us” and we couldn’t be more proud to bring fans three more seasons of a show that so well represents the NBC brand.” Each season will consist of 18 episodes.

TODAY’S GOOD NEWS

How’s this for good timing?  A nine-year-old girl near Boston named Shailyn Ryan was at school last Wednesday.  And her best friend Keira started choking on a hot dog at lunch.

She couldn’t breathe, and her face turned red.  But luckily, Shailyn knew what to do . . . because she’d just learned the Heimlich maneuver ONE DAY earlier.

Her parents signed her up for a course at their local rec center called Home Alone Safety.  And one of the things she learned was what to do if someone starts choking.

So, she immediately jumped up . . . got behind Keira . . . did the Heimlich the way they taught her to . . . and saved her best friend’s life.

She told the local news she wasn’t even nervous when she saw Keira choking, because she knew exactly how to handle it.

STINKY FRUIT STRIKES AGAIN

Students were forced to evacuate at an Australian university because of a suspected gas leak that turned out to be a discarded durian.

Emergency crews cleared 550 people from the University of Canberra library Friday before a search revealed the stench was caused by the popular but putrid tropical fruit, which was left in a trash bin.

“Fortunately, the suspected gas leak turned out to be a part of a durian — the offending fruit has now been removed,” the library wrote in a Facebook post. But the building still reeked when students were allowed to re-enter less than an hour later.

The incident wasn’t the first time the spiky fruit — which is often banned from hotels and public transportation in Southeast Asia because of its strong scent — has caused an evacuations.

STUDY: CANNABIS MAKES EXERCISE MORE ENJOYABLE AND PAINLESS

You’d think smoking weed would motivate people to do, well, nothing.

But a new study finds that’s not accurate at all. University of Colorado researchers found more than 50 percent of cannabis users said weed motivated them to exercise, and about 80 percent reported using the drug before hitting the gym.

Also, 67 percent said they smoked weed both before and after working out. Those who got high within hours of exercising logged 43 more minutes of activity each week compared to participants who didn’t time workouts around drug use. People credited cannabis with making exercise more enjoyable and improving recovery.

The scientists say this all suggests that smoking weed may tone down pain perception, and add, “we also know that the receptors cannabis binds to in the brain are very similar to the receptors that are activated naturally during the runners high.”

Be cautious though, as there’s not enough evidence that shows smoking weed is safe.

MAREN MORRIS’ RISKY SINGLE PAYS OFF

Never one to play it safe, Maren Morris says she was unsure about how her latest hit, “Girl,” would be received at country radio, but as the song sits inside the Top 15 on the charts and climbing, she tells us that living on the edge has sort of become her comfort zone. [“‘Girl’ just felt like it was boundary-less, genre-wise, and it was emotional and I kind of love operating where I just scare the hell out of myself and take a risk, and I feel like all of my songs at radio have been risky but in the last year or so have really started to pay off.”]

Maren’s “Girl” video is up for Video and Female Video of the Year at next month’s CMT Music Awards. The CMT Music Awards will air live from Nashville’s Bridgestone Arena on June 5th at 8 p.m. ET.

She’s currently overseas performing this weekend in Germany and Switzerland.

JUSTIN MOORE HIT THE BEACH TO TAP INTO CREATIVITY FOR NEW ALBUM – (04/19/2019)

Justin Moore’s new album came together at the beach. He co-wrote pretty much every song for his upcoming Late Nights and Longnecks album while spending time at his vacation house in Destin, Florida where the sea air proved to be good for the creative process.

Justin tells us: [“My producer now, we would just pop down to Destin, where Kate and I now have a house, and rent a place for, you know, a week, and write songs every day, and you might get one song a day or you may wind up having a couple of beers and an idea comes out and you write it at midnight, and so that’s kind of what we did with this one. I said, ‘Hey I’d love to bring these guys down to my house,’ so we picked like four or five different weeks over our winter break, and it was really, really effective and a whole lot of fun. I think the writers enjoyed it. I know I did, and I think we were a lot more creative than we would have been just sitting on a tour bus.”]

Justin’s Late Nights and Longnecks album is due out on July 26th.

Take Your Parents to See Thomas Rhett and His Dad Rhett Akins in Concert

If you like going to concerts with your parents . . . and who doesn’t . . . get tickets to THOMAS RHETT’s “Very Hot Summer tour.”  Hey, he’s letting his dad tag along.  RHETT AKINS is one of the openers.

But Thomas has a sneaking suspicion your parents want to go.  QUOTE, “I think there’s a lot of people that are gonna come to the concert to see my dad, like a bunch of people that loved him in the ’90s.

“They’re gonna get to come to the show to get to watch some of the ’90s influence and get to, honestly, to be blown away by how many hits he’s written in this genre.”

The other two openers are DUSTIN LYNCH and RUSSELL DICKERSON, and he’s sure that’s going to cover all the bases.  Quote, “Going from [my dad] to Russell is going to be such a wild turn of events, and then to Dustin, and then to us.

“But I think it’s going to be a pretty well-rounded tour and I think people are going to walk away with a lot of different kind of vibes from the show.”
