A teenager who volunteers in Houston decided that instead of having a high school graduation party, she’d throw a pizza party for women and children who are homeless.

She bought 100 pizzas for them, along with 400 personal hygiene kits.

In the basement of Alberta’s Vermilion Heritage Museum, atop a reinforced floor, sits an old safe that had never been opened– until now.

A man named Stephen Mills was on vacation with his family, and was taking a tour of the museum recently when the safe caught his eye. He says “I put in 20-40-60, three times left, one time right.” And then the safe opened. A cloud of dust billowed out, but otherwise all that was inside were a few hotel documents, including a pad of restaurant orders and a 1977 pay stub for $6 and change. Previously, experts said it would likely never be opened.

Museum officials have now covered the locking mechanism with tape and left the door ajar, fearing it could lock up again.

TODAY IS……………….

  • “Chocolate Ice Cream Day”, celebrating one of the most popular flavors, but not THE most popular. That honor still goes to vanilla, favorite of 29%. Chocolate is runner-up at 9%.

  • “VCR Day”, honoring the TV video recorder introduced on this day in 1975. Many homes still have one lurking in a closet. Many more still have VHS tapes … but nothing to play them on.

  • “Donut Day”, always the first Friday in June, honors the Salvation Army ‘Lassies’ of WWI who served donuts to thousands-upon-thousands of soldiers.

Stats for National Donut Day

  1. Our three favorite types of donuts are glazed, Boston cream, and chocolate frosted.  Only 1% of people in a recent survey said they hate ALL donuts.

  1. Would you ever cut a donut in half, and not eat the whole thing?  34% of us say no way.  66% say it’s acceptable.

  1. If you did cut a donut in half, who would you most likely share it with?  34% said their significant other . . . 32% said their kids . . . and 11% said no one, it’s MY DONUT.

  1. 56% of us have brought donuts into work before.  And just over half of us think more HIGHLY of co-workers who bring us free donuts.

  1. 22% of people think donuts are the best food to post on Instagram.  Pizza’s next with 19% of the vote, then ice cream with 15%.  (The survey was done by Dunkin’ Donuts though, so take that one with a grain of salt.)

  1. How do you SPELL the word “donut”?  Two different surveys asked that question this year, and got similar results.  One found 57% spell it D-O-N-U-T . . . and 43% spell it D-O-U-G-H-N-U-T.

The second survey found 59% use the shorter spelling.  And young people are more likely to spell it that way.

TODAY’S GOOD NEWS

A lot of us have made this mistake:  You try to get in shape by going overboard, and do too much too fast.  Like you decide to run five miles . . . then you’re sore for a week and never do it again.

So the right way to do it is by thinking long-term . . . creating goals . . . and sticking with a routine.  And here’s a great example . . .

There’s a 17-year-old kid in Canton, Ohio named Michael Watson who’s graduating from high school this month.  And he’s been overweight most of his life.  At one point, he was 325 pounds.

But about a year ago, he decided to do something about it.  So he overhauled his diet . . . stopped eating pizza every day . . . and walked several miles to school every morning.  Even if it was snowing, he still walked.  That’s how determined he was.

And his high school gave him a shout-out on Facebook . . . because he’s lost a total of 115 POUNDS.

He says the secret is you really have to want it.  And taking a real look at his relationship with food was hard, but worth it.

Jennifer Garner Reacts to Her Crush Donny Osmond Congratulating Her

Less than 2 weeks after being named as the cover of PEOPLE’S annual Beautiful Issues Jennifer Garner got a special shout-out from her childhood crush, Donny Osmond.

It all started when Katie Couric shared a throwback video of Cher performing with The Osmonds, Garner commented on Couric’s post, writing, “My number one biggest crush of all time @donnyosmond” along with a kissing face emoji.

Donny then responded by joking, “Miraculous that those jumpsuits didn’t scare you away.” Then, Osmond took a screenshot of an article about their Instagram interaction and posted it to his Instagram Story. “You learn something new every day!” he wrote, referring to Garner’s newly-admitted crush. “Congrats on being featured in People’s Beautiful Issue no beauty shines greater than a good heart.”

Garner reposted Osmond’s Instagram Story to her own, writing: “1st Grade Jennifer is freaking out right now

The MLB Network showed a clip from 1998, where a 22-year-old Alex Rodriguez was asked what his dream date would be.  And he said, quote, “Jennifer Lopez.  Hopefully you can find me a date with her.”

‘RAGE YOGA’ IS A THING, AND IT INVOLVES SWEARING AND DRINKING

The term yoga is often associated with deep breathing, calming music, and being really bendy. But there’s a new type that exists now: Rage Yoga.

Founder of Rage Yoga Lindsay Istace says, “It’s meant to be a different approach to yoga for those who find their peaceful center in a different way.” She adds that the practice “involves a little bit of extra chaos and a sense of humor.”

It incorporates traditional yoga postures and breathing with alternative principles– such as war cries, heavy metal guitar riffs, f-bombs, and even booze. Intensity and difficulty depends on the instructor and class, but Istace says,

“No matter what you can expect an awesome soundtrack, the opportunity for some emotional release, and to walk out feeling a little more bada**.”

This Week in Science

Here’s a quick rundown of this week in science

  1. You can get a pretty good view of Jupiter this weekend, just using binoculars.  It’ll be at its closest point in the next few days, about 398 million miles away.  You can see it with your naked eye.  But with binoculars, you can also see four of its 79 moons

  1. An asteroid about half the size of a football field has a slim chance of hitting Earth on September 9th.  Researchers put the odds at about 1 in 7,000.  And yes, something that big could do damage.  But it wouldn’t wipe us out.

It’s a little more than twice the size of the one that hit Russia in 2013.

(The one in the movie “Deep Impact” was the size of New York City.)

  1. In other CATASTROPHE news:  A report earlier this week predicted that climate change could cause the collapse of civilization by 2050 and lead to a, quote, “breakdown of nations and the international order.”

  1. And finally, researchers in Norway have found a clear link between Alzheimer’s disease and not brushing your TEETH enough.  Basically, bacteria from your gums can make its way into your brain, and produce a protein that kills brain cells.

“NBA Final”: Game 4: Toronto Raptors at Golden State Warriors

The NBA suspended Golden State Warriors minority owner Mark Stevens for one year, after he instigated an altercation with Kyle Lowry of the Toronto Raptors during Game Three on Wednesday night.

Lowry was scrambling for a loose ball.  He jumped into the crowd to save possession, and ended up landing in the front row.  He collided with some fans . . . and Stevens was NOT one of them. But he was two seats over . . . and for no reason, he reached out and SHOVED Lowry, who later said that Stevens was also shouting obscenities at him.

Stevens was ejected . . . but players from around the league RANTED about the situation on social media.

The Warriors said Stevens wouldn’t attend any games for the rest of the series . . . but the NBA came down harder, suspending Stevens for a whole year, and fining him $500,000.

That’s a lot, but he won’t have any problem paying it.  He’s a Silicon Valley hotshot, who’s reportedly worth $2.3 BILLION.  It’s unclear how large his ownership stake in the Warriors is.

For the record, Stevens has issued an apology, admitting that it was a lapse in judgement, and that he’s a better man than his actions showed.

Granger Smith’s Three-Year-Old Son Died in a Drowning Accident at Home

Condolences have been pouring in for GRANGER SMITH’s family. Their three-year-old son, River Kelly, died yesterday after a drowning accident at home.

Granger posted a photo of himself and River sharing a moment.  He wrote, quote, “I have to deliver unthinkable news.  We’ve lost our youngest son.  Following a tragic accident, and despite the doctor’s best efforts, he was unable to be revived.

“Amber and I made the decision to say our last goodbyes and donate his organs so that other children will be give a second chance at life.  Our family is devastated and heartbroken, but we take solace in knowing he is with his Heavenly Father.

“If there are words to say more, I cannot find them.”

Amber did a similar post, along with a photo of herself and River, and she asked for donations to be sent in his name to Dell Children’s Medical Center in Austin, Texas.

Granger and his wife have two other children:  Their daughter London is seven . . . and they have a five-year-old boy named Lincoln Monarch.

CARLY PEARCE’S FAN FAIR EXPERIENCES AS A KID IMPACT HOW SHE ENGAGES WITH FANS – Carly Pearce has been a country music fan ever since she can remember, so naturally she has attended the annual CMA Music Festival, formerly Fan Fair, in Nashville over the years. In fact, Carly admits to spending a lot of time waiting in line to get autographs and pictures with some of her favorites. [“I stood in line for hours for people like SheDaisy, people like LeAnn Rimes, Lee Ann Womack. All I wanted was just a glimpse to see them, let alone say hi to them, and so I feel, now seeing the lines for me and seeing that the fans are taking the time out of their busy four days to come and see me, it’s a responsibility to make sure that the way that I felt when I met those artists that were my favorites when I was a young girl, that I give them the same respect, and time, and genuine heart that I wanted and got when I was little.”]

Her summer tour schedule includes plenty of fairs and festivals, in addition to being on the road with Jason Aldean.

COLE SWINDELL GOT HIS ‘BEST ADVICE’ FROM LUKE BRYAN – (05/31/2019)

Cole Swindell says that Luke Bryan gave him some of the best songwriting advice he’s ever gotten but at the time he didn’t think so. Cole had emailed Luke asking him for some words of wisdom but Luke’s one-word response left Cole feeling disappointed.

Cole and Luke explain: [“All he wrote back about advice on songwriting, he just wrote ‘live’ — one word — he just wrote ‘live’ and I was like, ‘That wasn’t a very in-depth answer’ but looking back now getting older, I mean that’s advice for life. That’s not just writing songs. It’s certainly shaped my songwriting career. (Luke) I must have been drinking the right coffee that morning. (Cole) That was good. ‘Just live. I don’t have time for this. Just live.’ (Luke) That may be my . . . out of all my . . . that’s my most profound moment. (Cole) And it kind of took me off guard. I was like, ‘Well, that wasn’t really what I was looking for’ (Luke laughs) but the older I got I was like, ‘That is the best advice he’s ever given.’ (Luke) I had a shining moment, y’all hear that?”]

Cole is on the road with Luke this summer.
