A 14-year-old kid from North Carolina was flying as an unaccompanied minor to visit his grandparents in Sweden recently, but United mistakenly put him on a flight to Germany.  He texted his parents while the plane was taxiing and about to take off, because everyone on the plane was speaking German.  But his parents couldn’t reach the airline.  Eventually the kid got a flight attendant to figure it out.

You never know where your message in a bottle might end up. A man relaxing in the water in Santa Rosa Beach, Florida, found a message in a bottle that was thrown into Lake Michigan 24 years earlier. Gary Henrickson says he saw the bottle bobbing in the water near him, and uncorked it to find a letter from a man written in 1995. It reads: “Hello, June 16, 1995, Frankfurt, Michigan. I’ve tossed this bottle into the water to bring joy to anyone who finds it. This whiskey bottle was full a few short hours earlier. If you find this call me, and I’ll buy you a drink.” Henrickson says he tried to text the number on the note, and it actually reached the author of the note. He said the two talked and determined the bottle must have traveled to Florida via the Mississippi River.

Interesting Facts About the Original “The Lion King”

With the “Lion King” remake breaking records, Buzzfeed has put together a list of 20 interesting facts about the original, which came out in 1994.

–  Sean Connery was Disney’s first choice to play Mufasa.  James Earl Jones ended up with the role . . . both in the original AND the new version.

–  Disney originally wanted Patrick Stewart or someone from “Monty Python” for the role of Zazu, the hornbill.  Rowan Atkinson ended up with it.  John Oliver plays Zazu in the new movie.

–  The opening lyrics:  from Circle of Life literally translate to “There comes a lion, father . . . Oh yes, it’s a lion.”  The opening is sung in Zulu.

–  Tim Rice co-wrote the lyrics for the movie’s songs, and he originally wanted ABBA to be on the soundtrack.  When ABBA declined, he asked Elton John.

–  “Can You Feel the Love Tonight?” was almost cut altogether because it didn’t fit the film’s father-and-son theme.  It was put back in after Elton saw an early cut of the movie and made it clear that it NEEDED to be in.

–  There are no real lion roars used in the movie, they were all done by voice actor Frank Welker, who created them by growling into a metal garbage can.

–  “The Lion King” is the best selling VHS tape of all time.

–  Also “The Lion King” was originally titled “The King of the Jungle” . . . but thankfully someone realized that lions don’t actually live in jungles, and so the title was changed.  The tagline still appeared in some of the early marketing, though.

TODAY’S GOOD NEWS

A guy in Iowa named Dale Schroeder worked as a carpenter for 67 years and never made much money.  But he never had kids, and never spent very much on himself.

He was so frugal that his friends say he only had two pairs of jeans . . . work jeans, and church jeans.  But he was also a very generous guy. We’re talking about him in the past tense, because he died in 2005.  But he’s in the news now, because over 30 people he never met just got together to pay tribute to him.

Before Dale passed away, he told his buddy who’s a lawyer that he wanted to do something good with his life savings.  So his friend asked how much he had . . . and it was just under THREE MILLION DOLLARS.

One thing Dale always wished he’d done was go to college, but he couldn’t afford to when he was young.

So they used the money to set up a scholarship fund for OTHER kids who couldn’t afford tuition.  And he ended up paying for 33 total strangers to get a college education.

They call themselves “Dale’s Kids,” and ALL 33 of them just got together this past Saturday to share stories, and talk about how he’s totally transformed their lives.

Dale’s lawyer friend says the only thing he wanted was for them to pay it forward someday, and be generous with someone else.

Buckingham Palace Is Hiring a New Chef, and the Job Comes with an Amazing Perk

Buckingham Palace is hiring a new chef. The job opening, for a Demi Chef de Partie, is currently posted on the royal family’s official website, along with details including one major perk of the position.

For starters, the job pays the very specific annual salary of 22,076.04 pounds (or about $27,480) and offers a 15 percent employee contribution pension plan. All meals while on-duty are included as are 33 paid holidays, per the job listing.

One of the most intriguing aspects, perhaps, is that the Demi Chef de Partie will have the option of live-in accommodations, as well as access to a range of recreational facilities at Buckingham Palace.

There will however be a salary adjustment made for those who choose this option. Once hired, the Demi Chef de Partie might also be able to sneak a peek at the royal families other lavish residences, too, as the role will involve traveling to other royal residences.

The royal family will be accepting applications through July 28

CHILDREN IN ENGLAND WILL BE TAUGHT HOW TO BRUSH THEIR TEETH IN SCHOOL

There are certain skills most kids learn at home, and certain skills kids usually learn at school, but apparently who teaches what varies. In the UK, the Public Health England (PHE) reports that kids across the country miss at least 60,000 days of school each year due to dental health issues.

Health authorities blame this on lack of supervision at home or parents simply being unable to afford toothbrushes and paste. The UK’s Health Secretary is reportedly going to suggest the country begin giving tooth brushing “lessons” in public schools, and the idea has been met with mixed responses.

One dental expert praised the idea, but critics questions whether oral hygiene is something a teacher should be responsible for. Similar lessons are already happening in parts of England for children ages three to five.

JAVA UPDATE:
Will that be hot or cold coffee?

Coffee is known to be rich in healthful antioxidants, which are beneficial in reducing the risk of several diseases. But for those of us who enjoy a cold coffee drink during the summer months – are we getting the same benefits?

Well, no. Cleveland Clinic doctors found that hot coffee has about 50 percent more antioxidants than cold brewed coffee. Why? When coffee is brewed cold, it is a totally different process, and you wind up with less acidity and about half the antioxidants.

Previous research has shown the major benefits of coffee come from both the antioxidants and the caffeine. Other studies have linked coffee consumption to a reduced risk for diseases such as type two diabetes, liver disease, and heart disease.

The problem? If we load our coffees full of cream, sugar, syrups or whipped cream – we can wipe out all of those health benefits in a hurry. For those who like their coffee cold, one expert suggests brewing it hot and then having it over ice.

ERIC CHURCH TOPS CHARTS WITH ‘SOME OF IT’

Eric Church‘s “Some Of It” tops both the Billboard and Mediabase charts this week. The song was co-written by Eric, but it wasn’t originally intended to make his current Desperate Man album. It wasn’t until Eric’s wife played the song for a friend of theirs that he realized the album wasn’t complete without it.

[“It was such a blessing that happened. It wasn’t going to be on the album. It was just one of those freak things that I put it on the album, the last song on the album. The album was done, and all of a sudden it becomes the pillar, one of the pillars on the album. I think it’s one of the great things about music is you just never know what’s going to happen until it’s all said and done. You can try to plan all you want to, but you’ll probably not going to figure it out.”]

Eric continues on his Double Down Tour this fall. It resumes on September 13th in Green Bay, Wisc.

BROOKS & DUNN: KINGS OF NEON’ EXHIBIT TO OPEN AT HALL OF FAME –

Brooks & Dunn are the subject of a new exhibit at the Country Music Hall of Fame and Museum in Nashville beginning next month. The display, called “Brooks & Dunn: Kings of Neon,” opens Aug. 9th and runs through July 19, 2020.

Earlier this year, the Hall of Fame paid a visit to Kix and Ronnie’s homes to retrieve their extension collections of memorabilia for the exhibit. Kix tells us his house now feels empty: [“(Ronnie) They cleaned you out. (Kix) Cleaned me out. This van came up and got all my awards and guitars. You wouldn’t even want to go to my house right now cause it was all about me and now it’s like I don’t know . . . it’s just like a house! (laughs) I can’t strut through in my bathrobe anymore and go, ‘Damn I’m awesome!’ Now it’s like I’m just a regular human being (laughs).”]

Brooks & Dunn will be inducted into the Country Music Hall of Fame in October.

“This Is Us” Actress Chrissy Metz — has announced that she will be releasing a country album. Fans have been wondering if she might do so ever since she wowed the crowd while performing at the Academy of Country Music Awards, when she sang ‘I’m Standing With You’ with Carrie Underwood, Lauren Alaina, Maddie & Tae and Mickey Guyton.
