During the 12th Annual World Naked Bike Ride held in St. Louis, an angry man came out and started shooting the bicyclists with paintballs.  No one knows why exactly, but here’s a witness giving her account.

How much would you pay for a friend?

A new website is offering up a deal for people who are feeling a little lonely — rent a friend for 25-bucks and hour. The website is called rentafriend .com

One friend-for-pay — Nikki Souza of Las Vegas — explains that she acts more like a tour guide, showing people around her city.

The website makes clear that the service is not for dating or escorts — just short-term friend rentals.

TODAY’S GOOD NEWS

The whole ‘Storm Area 51’ thing has been in the news lately.  Around TWO MILLION people have now signed up to storm it in September and find evidence of an alien cover-up.

It’s not clear how many of those people actually plan to show up.  But it also inspired a different kind of rescue mission . . .

An animal shelter in Oklahoma City took advantage of the story by holding their own event.

They posted on Facebook last Friday, and asked people to come adopt a pet to PROTECT them from any Area 51 aliens that escape.

They posted three photos of different dogs in tinfoil hats.  Then their hashtag “StormTheShelter” started going viral.  And a bunch of pets have been adopted, including at least two dogs in the photos.

Random people online have also been donating to the shelter, just to help out.  And they’ve raised over $2,400 so far.

ROCK DOG

A woman in Ohio recently found out her golden retriever had eaten over five pounds of rocks from her backyard.

It turns out they’d been barbecuing, and someone had poured the juices from their meal on the rocks.

Luckily, she took the dog to the vet, and he was able to pass the rocks without surgery.

According to a new survey, 90% of people say they’d rather take a bunch of short trips rather than one long one.

The top three reasons are:  They’re less stressful to plan . . . they’re cheaper . . . and it lets people travel more often.

WHERE CAN A GUY GET A DRINK AROUND HERE?
We all know by now that we should be doing everything possible to reduce our dependence on plastics. And that in the eyes of many, single use water bottles are evil incarnate. That’s where a new app called “Tap” comes in.

It counts on you to bring along your reusable water bottle, and Tap maps out for you and gives walking directions to all the water fountains and restaurants in your area that are willing to refill your bottle. So far, the app lists more than 34,000 refill stations in 30 countries.

Some of the locations are traditional water fountains, while others are restaurants or stores, like Sweetgreen, Lululemon, or Adidas, that either have refill stations or are willing to refill a bottle over the counter as a way to draw in customers. There is a similar app in the UK called “Refill.”

JUSTIN MOORE ‘CRAWLS’ BACK INTO HIS COMFORT ZONE WITH NEW ALBUM

Justin Moore‘s last album, Kinda Don’t Care, was an exercise in pushing himself outside of his comfort zone with more progressive sounding songs, but his new album, Late Nights and Longnecks, is the total opposite. [“If I got out of my comfort zone on the last album, which I did, I crawled all the way back into it on this album. And it’s not because I didn’t enjoy doing it, because I did.  I just really wanted to make an album that I would consider to be the most traditional one we’ve recorded and that was kind of the goal going in. I think my hardcore fans are gonna absolutely love this album and that was kind of the goal is to create a project that they go, ‘Man I absolutely love this. This sounds like vintage Justin.”]

Justin’s new album, Late Nights and Longnecks, will be released on July 26th.

EUROPE IS SCORCHING HOT

Paris, London and points across Europe are bracing for record temperatures as the second heat wave this summer bakes the continent.

Climate scientists warn this could become the new normal in many parts of the world. But temperate Europe — where air conditioning is rare — isn’t equipped for the temperatures frying the region this week.

One by one, heat records are being broken across Europe. On Thursday, the Paris area could be as hot as 42 C (108 F) as a result of hot, dry air coming from northern Africa that’s trapped between cold stormy systems.

London might see 39 C (102 F). And swaths of Germany, Belgium, the Netherlands, Luxembourg and Switzerland could face temperatures exceeding 40 C (104 F).

And this is only the latest of several hot days: Belgium and Germany recorded their all-time high temperatures Wednesday.

Germany’s record of 40.5 degrees (104.9 F) is likely going to be very short-lived, however — the German Weather Service is expecting even higher temperatures Thursday.

Across London and Paris, authorities and charity workers handed out water and sunscreen to homeless people and opened day centres for them to rest and shower.

France is particularly on alert after a 2003 heat wave killed nearly 15,000 people, especially the elderly.

Since summers in Europe are usually mild, few homes have air conditioning. It’s not that common in hospitals, stores or restaurants either.

Electric fans are selling fast around Paris — and traditional folding fans seem to be making a comeback, waved by many on the stuffy subway.
