On Today’s Show

There’s a 63-year-old guy named Curtis Pardee from New Haven, Connecticut.  And he was recently busted for using a chainsaw to chop down a famous 200-year-old tree called the “Door Tree” in Hamden, Connecticut.

It got its name because the bottom of the tree grew to look like a big arch you can walk under.  The tree is so famous it was once featured on “Ripley’s Believe It or Not”.

So why did Curtis chop it down?  He told the cops it was because he HATED his brother . . . and his brother loved the tree.

Now he’s facing charges of criminal mischief and criminal trespass.

According to a new survey, almost half of Americans say they’ve worn the same pair of underwear for two days or longer.

And 13% of people have worn the same pair of underwear for more than a WEEK.  Men are two-and-a-half times more likely to have done that than women.

There’s more.  Most of us keep our underwear in rotation way longer than we should for hygienic purposes.  Some experts say you should throw away your underwear every year to prevent a buildup of bacteria like E. coli.

But only 16% of people say their oldest pair of underwear is less than a year old.

Teen Starts Tweeting From Her Smart Fridge After Her Phone Gets Taken Away

There’s a 15-year-old girl named Dorothy who goes by the online handle, @ThankUNext327.  Her whole Twitter account is basically an ode to Ariana Grande.

But her mom recently took her phone away after she got distracted and started a FIRE in the kitchen.  So she had to get creative and search out other ways to get online.

First, she started tweeting from her Nintendo DS, until her mom confiscated that too.  Then she realized she could post from her old Nintendo Wii. A day later, she said she found out where her mom was hiding her DS and took it back, so she could respond to direct messages.  But then her mom caught her AGAIN.

So at that point, she had no way to get online . . . until she realized she could send tweets through her parents’ SMART REFRIGERATOR.

She said, quote, “I do not know if this is going to tweet.  I am talking to my fridge.  What the heck?  My mom confiscated all of my electronics again.”

She went radio silent for a few days after that.  Then she posted one more time the other day after going viral, and thanked people for all the support.

Now the hashtag “FreeDorothy” is trending.  And Twitter’s official account even shared it.

GOOD NEWS

There’s a 30-year-old guy in Waco, Texas named Chris Barrington who has a lot of special needs.  He only functions at about a six-year-old level.  And he’s never had a great home life either.

The only person who took any care of him was his father, who died of leukemia earlier this month.  And police recently found Chris wandering down a highway all alone.

He doesn’t have any immediate family now.  So when cops talked to him, one of the names he gave them was Michell Girard . . . a teacher he hadn’t talked to in YEARS.

Michell had him as a student for four years in junior high.  And he remembered how nice she was.  So the cops talked to her.  And she agreed to take him in while they figured out a more long-term solution.

But then she found out he’d probably end up in an institution of some kind.  So she just filed paperwork to take PERMANENT custody of him.

She also found out he’d never celebrated Christmas or gotten a birthday gift before.  So she just threw him his first birthday party, and says the rest of the year is all about new experiences.

People Are Losing It Over a Report Saying You Should Keep Your House at 78 Degrees . . . or 82 When You Sleep

There’s a new report out from Energy Star, which is the EPA program that promotes energy efficiency.  And it has new recommendations for where you should be setting your thermostat . . .

  1. 78 degrees when you’re home.
  2. 85 when you’re not home.
  3. 82 at night.

Well . . . a reporter from the CBS station in Tampa TWEETED out that report yesterday morning, and people immediately started LOSING IT.

As one person said, quote, “I see we’ve decided to give up on sleeping . . . or having pets that aren’t native to the rain forest.”  Another said, quote, “82 when you’re sleeping?  Yeah, on the sun.”

Drinking Coffee at Night Won’t Keep You Awake After All

If you want a cup of coffee or six after dinner, go for it.  Believe it or not, you should still be able to fall asleep.

A new study out of Florida Atlantic University found there’s NO connection between drinking caffeine at night and having trouble falling asleep or staying asleep.

So what DOES affect people’s sleep?  The researchers found that when people smoked or vaped within four hours of bedtime, the nicotine had a significant effect on their sleep.

Alcohol had a negative effect too, although not as much as nicotine.

Now . . . all this being said, the researchers say it’s not a license to start chugging coffee before bed because you might be more sensitive to caffeine than average.

So make sure coffee at night doesn’t affect YOU personally before you make it part of your nightly ritual.

At Busch Stadium in St. Louis, there’s a McDonald’s “Big Mac” neon sign on the second deck in left field.  Last night, Paul DeJong of the Cardinals hit a home run that bashed through the fiberglass in the sign, and the ball got stuck in the “M”.  Here’s the call, then the sportscasters joking about how tough it’ll be to retrieve the ball.  Sign Trivia:  Albert Pujols knocked out the “I” in 2009.

  1. The Yankees were so upset about losing 19-5 to the Indians last week that manager Aaron Boone says the league should consider implementing a ‘mercy rule,’ so they can just end the game before anyone gets hurt.

  1. TODAY IS…. NATIONAL RADIO DAY….

The First Radio Station:  In 1920, Westinghouse, one of the leading radio manufacturers, had an idea for selling more radios.  It would offer programming.  Radio began as a one-to-one method of communication, so this was a novel idea.  Dr. Frank Conrad was a Pittsburgh area ham operator with lots of connections.  He frequently played records over the airwaves for the benefit of his friends.  This was just the sort of thing Westinghouse had in mind, and it asked Conrad to help set up a regularly transmitting station in Pittsburgh.

On November 2, 1920, station KDKA made the nation’s first commercial broadcast (a term coined by Conrad).  They chose that date because it was election day, and the power of radio was proven when people could hear the results of the Harding-Cox presidential race before they read about it in the newspaper.

KDKA was a huge hit, inspiring other companies to take up broadcasting.  In four years,  there were 600 commercial stations. CFCO has been on the air since September 1927 and is one of Canada’s oldest continuously running radio stations. CINW Montreal came on in 1919 – 2010

Carrie Underwood, Reba McEntire, and Dolly Parton Are Hosting This Year’s CMAs . . .

CARRIE UNDERWOOD will be hosting this year’s CMAs with REBA MCENTIRE and DOLLY PARTON.  That means BRAD PAISLEY is OUT after co-hosting with Carrie for 11 straight years.

Here’s the official word:  “The ’53rd Annual CMA Awards’ will celebrate the legacy of women within country music, and we couldn’t think of a more dynamic group of women to host the show.”

It’s a brilliant move to bring in two artists who are legends, and they’ve even hosted the show before.  Dolly did in 1988, and Reba did it from 1990 to 1992.

This can’t be great news for Brad.  Hosting a high-profile show like that leads to more fans, which means more record sales and more people buying concert tickets.

Still, he took the high road.  He hit up Twitter yesterday and wrote, “As a fan of all three of these amazing women, I can’t wait to watch.”  It’s way too early to know if Brad will be coming back in 2020.  The final CMA nominees will be announced a week from tomorrow . . . August 28th, on “Good Morning America”.  The show airs November 13th on ABC.

LADY ANTEBELLUM WOULD LOVE TO COLLABORATE WITH ANOTHER FAMOUS ‘LADY’ –

When it comes to musical collaborations, Lady Antebellum have a wish list of fellow artists, and at the top is another lady. Hillary Scott, Charles Kelley and Dave Haywood tell us: [“There’s always going to be artists that we would be so excited to work with. I mean (Charles) Lady Gaga is really blowing my mind with this Star Is Born stuff. (Hillary) Yeah. (Charles) The song she wrote with three of our Nashville songwriters – what was it called, ‘Always Remember Us This Way?’ (Hillary) Yeah. (Charles) I mean it’s like, woah!  You get to hear the vulnerability and Lady Gaga in a different way, where the production doesn’t mask her voice. (Hillary) She’s gonna be in Vegas. Maybe we can work on that collaboration. (Dave Haywood) Two ladies, together. (Hillary) Yeah!”]

Lady Antebellum will return to the Pearl Concert Theater at the Palms Casino Resort in Las Vegas this weekend for the final leg of their current residency. They play their final show on Saturday, August 31st.
