A 91-year-old woman in Boston named Diane Hoffman just broke a world record in her age group for the 400-meter dash.  And she thinks it’s funny, because she’s never been a runner.  She plays a lot of tennis, but just started running last year.  Here’s a clip from a great interview she did after breaking the record.  She hopes she inspires people to get up, and get active.

A woman in British Columbia was out in the middle of nowhere walking her dog last Tuesday, and realized a MOUNTAIN LION was stalking her.

She pulled out her phone and filmed it.  And she tried yelling at it, but it wouldn’t go away.  It just stood there staring at her.

So she stopped recording . . . went into her iTunes . . . and brought up the METALLICA song, “Don’t Tread on Me”. And as soon as it started playing, the mountain lion TOOK OFF . . . ran into the bush . . . and never came back.

Jon Hamm has revealed “Top Gun: Maverick” will be shot in “mind-blowing” 6K definition. He spilled some details on what fans can expect from the long-awaited sequel to the 1986 original and teased the crystal-clear visuals and stunts which he says will leave viewers with their jaws to the floor. Although Hamm appears in the movie, he isn’t allowed to talk about his role.

The movie has been pushed back  for a June 2020 arrival in theatres.

GOOD NEWS

A couple in Florida named Matt and Kelli Cameron got married recently.  And instead of asking for gifts, they used it as an opportunity to give back . . .

Kelli works as a first-grade teacher, and knows that a lot of kids’ parents can’t afford school supplies.  Which means teachers end up spending their own money on them.

So instead of gifts, she and Matt asked people to buy school supplies they could DONATE.

The school where Kelli works didn’t need the help.  So she reached out to her district to find a school that did.  And all the stuff went to a high-poverty rate elementary school in Tampa.

Their wedding guests donated over 70 backpacks filled with all kinds of stuff.  Everything from pens and notebooks, to water bottles and headphones.

Kelli says it’s really important for kids to feel excited when they start the school year.  And she’s glad they could help, even just a little bit.

OUT OF THE INN:
Hotel giant Holiday Inn has announced that it is ditching mini-shampoos in favor of bulk-size bathroom amenities in an effort to cut waste.

The owner of Holiday Inn and InterContinental Hotels said that its nearly 843,000 guest rooms use an average of 200 million bathroom miniatures every year, and with public awareness of the problem of plastic waste at an all-time high, the move will allow the company to reduce their waste footprint and environmental impact.

 Local honey producer celebrates expansion

A Merlin-based honey company is expanding into two of the province’s most popular grocery stores.

Summer’s Gold Honey Company has signed contracts with both Loblaws and Sobeys and are preparing to launch their product into 70 more stores across Ontario.

Mike Davidson owns Summer’s Gold Honey with his wife, Pamela. He got into the business in the 80s when he worked as a beekeeper. The job went on the backburner when Davidson began his career as a truck driver, where he worked for 30 years. Once he retired, he went back to his original love- the honey business. He was able to grow the company into commercial size, producing, packing and selling their honey in addition to several other products including lip balm and candles.

Before the expansion, their products could be found at 50 retailers, including several Home Hardware’s in the Chatham-Kent area. The expansion will put their products on Loblaws shelves all the way to London and in Sobey’s stores all the way to Woodstock.

Even with all of the growth, Davidson still plans to continue to offer local service that the company has built a reputation for.

COFFEE AND CHOCOLATE MAKE YOU SMARTER

How many cups of coffee do usually have in a day? Researchers keep uncovering evidence that shows caffeine helps makes our brains healthier and more resilient.

One study from early this year found methylxanthines, a class of chemicals found in coffee, tea, and dark chocolate, helped sustain cognitive performance and helped protect neurons from dysfunction and death. Another analysis of several studies showed that both coffee and tea both reduce the risk of Alzheimer’s disease and also the risk of brain cancer.

So how much caffeine do you need to consume to see the brain benefits? About six to eight, eight-ounce cups of coffee per day, ideally before 2 p.m., so it doesn’t disrupt your sleep. You could also replace a cup or two with an ounce of dark chocolate.

PEOPLE WHO EAT DARK CHOCOLATE ARE LESS LIKELY TO BE DEPRESSED

University College London scientists talked to over 13,000 people about their chocolate consumption and depression symptoms.

They found those who reported eating any amount of dark chocolate were significantly less likely to report any clinical signs of depression. The same could not be said of those who ate milk or white chocolate, however.

Researchers say chocolate has a number of psychoactive components, including two that produce a feeling of euphoria similar to that of marijuana. Also, dark chocolate in particular has more antioxidants, which reduce inflammation in the body– a reaction that some doctors think is linked to depression.

Still, the scientists caution that they cannot prove that eating dark chocolate helps beat depression.

Luke Combs’ “This One’s For You” Has Set a “Billboard” Record

LUKE COMBS cannot be stopped.  His debut album “This One’s for You” has been Number One on the “Billboard” Top Country Albums chart for 44 weeks.  That sets a new record for a male country artist.

It tops Randy Travis’s “Always and Forever”, which spent 43 non-consecutive weeks at Number One back in 1987 and ’88.  The overall record is Shania Twain’s “Come On Over”, which spent 50 weeks at the top beginning in 1997.

And remember earlier this year when Luke set a different record by having his first five singles reach Number One on the Country Airplay chart?  Make it six.  “Beer Never Broke My Heart” has also reached the top.

Luke is happily encouraging future generations of country singers too.  He posted a clip of a toddler standing in his kitchen ignoring a plastic spider that’s on the floor . . . as he rips through a verse of “Beer Never Broke My Heart”.

Luke captioned it, “Sing it buddy.  Watch out for that spider though.”
