On Today’s Show
August 28, 2019 9:35 amA woman in Kansas City went to the doctor because she thought she had some water in her left ear. But it turned out to be a brown recluse SPIDER. Luckily it didn’t bite her, because they’re extremely venomous. Now she says she’s terrified it’ll happen again, and she’s been sleeping with her ears plugged.

Here’s some new nightmare fuel for you. Animal rescuers in Britain say a couple living in Surrey spotted a python exiting their five-month-old daughter’s room recently and heading down the stairs. The child’s father called the RSPCA and local police, and the snake was eventually captured. Rescuers were eventually able to find the friendly snake’s owner and return it. The creature’s owners say the snake managed to push out an air vent in his terrarium and squeeze through the tiny hole to escape.

ENTERTAINMENT
The new Disney+ streaming service is trying out a bold, new strategy. Well, technically, it’s a bold, OLD strategy. They’re going to run their shows WEEKLY, instead of dropping entire seasons all at once.
Apparently, that means ALL their shows. Like the “High School Musical” reboot, the new “Star Wars” series “The Mandalorian”, and all those new Marvel series.
So you won’t be able to binge any of them unless you wait those many, torturous weeks until all the episodes have aired before you start. Otherwise, you just have to tune in weekly.

GOOD NEWS
Two women in B.C. named Susan Hook and Martha McCallum have been best friends for over 50 years.
After both of their husbands passed away, they decided to move in together. So they’ve been roommates for a while. And they just hit the lottery for $2 million. But they’re NOT arguing over the money.
They went in on a ticket together and agreed to split it if they won. So that’s what they’re doing. And even though they have plenty of money now, they STILL want to be roommates.
They’re just planning to travel a lot more. They say they can now live comfortably but not flashy.
The win was especially meaningful for Susan, because it happened on the anniversary of her husband’s death.
She says she’s always dreaded August 17th each year. But now it’ll be a VERY good day to look back on.

I CAN’T BELIEVE IT’S NOT WATER:
Didn’t you say that you like whipped butter? Scientists at Cornell University have whipped up a new low-calorie “butter” that consists almost entirely of…water.
A tablespoon of the new spread has only 2.8 grams of fat and 25 calories, while regular butter contains about 11 grams of fat and nearly 100 calories. The new aqua-spread is 80 percent water and 2 percent oil, and is said to have the consistency and “mouthfeel” of regular butter.
It was created through a new process to emulsify a large amount of water with minuscule drops of vegetable oil and milk fat to mimic butter, at approximately one-fourth of the calories of real butter and without artificial stabilizers.
The next steps before making the new spread available to consumers involve “adjusting for taste” and possibly adding vitamins.

Parents Will Spend Over $500 on Back-to-School Shopping This Year
According to a new study, the average parents will spend $507 on back-to-school shopping this year. That’s up $42 from last year.
(A separate study found that parents with kids in elementary school or high school will spend an average of $696.70 on back-to-school shopping, while families with college students will spend $976.78.)
Tips to Save Money on Back-to-School Shopping
➢ Make a list and a budget. Schools usually send students a list of what they’ll need for the upcoming school year.
➢ Take inventory of what you already have. To avoid buying things you don’t need, check to see if you have pens, pencils, or notebooks left over from last year that you can still use.
➢ Use coupons and shop sales. A lot of stores have coupons on their apps and websites, and in their weekly circulars.
➢ Buy used or refurbished items. Electronics can be expensive. And some items, like graphing calculators, won’t be needed for more than a couple years. So check sites like eBay, Amazon, Apple, and Dell for their refurbished deals.
➢ Buy in bulk: Kids can really go through the essentials like paper, pencils, glue sticks and notebooks quickly.
➢ Do your online homework: Follow your favorite brands and retailers on social media and sign up for their email newsletters. It’s a great way to stay in the know about the latest and greatest deals. Sometimes they even have exclusive sales for their followers.

OLD DOMINION SAY THEY HAD HARD TIME PICKING WINNER AMONG TALENT ON ‘SONGLAND’ –
Old Dominion were the guest recording artists on last week’s episode of the NBC’s hit series Songland, as they looked for a song to be featured in a new Jeep brand commercial.
The band, along with Jeep/FCA CMO Olivier Francois, chose Songland contestant Katelyn Tarver’s “Young” to be released and featured in the 90-second Jeep brand commercial, in which Tarver appears as a character.
Songland gives up-and-coming songwriters with a rare opportunity to collaborate with music producers who are responsible for today’s biggest hits. As guests on the show, Old Dominion members Trevor Rosen and Matthew Ramsey tell us they were presented with so much talent that they had a hard time choosing a winner. [“Doing the TV show, Songland, was actually really cool. You know, we’ve never really been pitched songs before. We’ve always written every song we put out. So, it was really cool to see these up and coming songwriters play some great songs for us. And, you know, see them get an opportunity too. We remember what it was like to be songwriters just trying to get any opportunity we could so it was cool to be a part of that for them too. (Ramsey) It was super tough though to choose songs, they were all so good. I remember the first song, I was like ‘Man, this is going to be hard because a lot of times you get pitched songs, quite honestly, they’re pretty bad. But, you know, at this level, to be presented with such great songs just every time . . . It was pretty amazing.”]
Songland airs on Wednesdays at 9 p.m. ET.

- Chicago Bears LB Khalil Mack • Cleveland Browns QB Baker Mayfield
• Dallas Cowboys QB Dak Prescott • Kansas City Chiefs QB Patrick Mahomes
• Los Angeles Rams QB Jared Goff • Seattle Seahawks QB Russell Wilson
This season marks Carrie’s seventh consecutive SNF show open. [“I love being the voice of Sunday Night Football because I grew up watching football . . . from birth. I’m from Oklahoma – we’re a football state. There’s just something about being at a live sporting event or watching it on TV. There’s an excitement to it that really, it’s unlike anything else, so it’s been so wonderful working with everybody at SNF, and I count myself very lucky and very blessed that I get to be a small part of something that I’ve loved my whole life.”]
