A 13-year-old kid named Max Werenka  was using a GoPro camera with a waterproof case at a lake in B.C. . . . spotted a submerged car . . . and ended up solving a 27-year-old missing person’s case.  It turns out a woman who went missing in 1992 had crashed her car into the lake.  And her family is glad they finally have some closure.  Here’s Max with his mom, and one of the cops who looked into it.

A supermarket chain in Finland is experimenting with a new kind of happy hour. In an effort to reduce food waste, all 900 S-Market stores in the country are knocking 60% of the price of their already-reduced meat and fish at 9 o’clock each evening. It results in a win-win-win situation where customers can get super-cheap food, the retailer doesn’t have to pay for disposal, the environment benefits because there is less waste produced. One executive of the company says that they call it ‘Happy hour’ in the hopes of drawing regulars, “Like any decent bar”. A recent UN report stated that a shocking one-third of food produced for human consumption never gets eaten.

A Toronto coffee shop has become an unlikely celebrity hotspot after a surprise visit by Tom Hanks. Hanks, who is in the city for the Toronto International Film Festival, stopped by for a cup of coffee at Grinder Coffee on Friday night, as a result of the store’s social media campaign to lure Hanks there. The business put up a life-size cardboard cut-out of Hanks, and made daily social media posts with cheeky references to his films. Owner Joelle Murray says that Hanks was “so funny and generous” during his visit.

The visit came a year after Grinder Coffee successfully campaigned for Ryan Gosling to swing by for a cup of joe.

GOOD NEWS

There’s a retirement center in D.C. for veterans called the Armed Forces Retirement Home.  And last year, disaster struck . . . when their BINGO MACHINE broke.

It’s like a small billboard with big numbers on it that light up, so they’re easy to read.  And not having it means a lot of people can’t play.  But they couldn’t afford a new one.

Then back in June, a 16-year-old named Sarah Nordlinger found out about it, and decided to raise money for a NEW machine.

She’s with a group called Children of the American Revolution.  And she started a GoFundMe page to raise $8,000 . . . including $6,000 for a new machine, plus $2,000 for the retirement home’s community garden.

In the first two months, she managed to raise about $1,700.  Then last week, “The Washington Post” did a story about it.  And now donations are pouring in.  Last we checked, it was up over FIFTEEN GRAND.

TOY HALL OF FAME

The National Toy Hall of Fame announced the 12 finalists that will be on its ballot this year and, as always, it’s a mix of classic toys from lots of different eras.  And one weird, modern item that feels like it doesn’t belong.

This year’s 12 finalists are:  Care Bears . . . coloring books . . . the Fisher-Price Corn Popper . . . Jenga . . . Magic the Gathering cards . . . He-Man . . . Matchbox cars . . . My Little Pony . . . Nerf guns . . . Risk . . . the top . . . and the smartphone.

That’s right:  The smartphone.  Yeah, you can play games on it, but is it really a TOY?

Around two or three toys usually wind up getting voted in every year.  Last year, the three toys that made it were the Magic 8 Ball, the pinball machine, and Uno.

The Fisher-Price Corn Popper and He-Man were both finalists last year as well, but didn’t get the votes to make it in.

A committee of 23 experts vote on the toys, but this year, for the first time, they’re letting the public vote as the “24th member.”

“BAD” HABITS THAT ARE ACTUALY GOOD FOR YOU:
☞ Skipping the gym:  If you didn’t get enough sleep, you are sore, or stressed by other factors, it is probably healthier to skip it. Resting is crucial for making healthy habits stick.

☞ Eating fatty foods:  The American Heart Association recommends eating larger amounts of unsaturated fats than saturated fats. Unsaturated fats come from foods such as nuts, seeds, olive oil, salmon and avocado. While some high-fat foods may not be great for you, eating fat from a variety of sources is important.

☞ Sleeping in:  Doing it every day isn’t a great idea, since getting too much sleep can actually be bad for you. But if you’re feeling sleep-deprived, go ahead and catch up on your ZZZs.

☞ Drinking coffee:  There are plenty of reasons to drink coffee every day, including the fact that coffee contains antioxidants. And there may not even be such a thing as drinking too much — studies have shown that even those who drink up to eight cups of coffee per day may be healthier for it.

☞ Complaining:  Sometimes, it’s important to just let it out. Complaining can help to relieve stress and alleviate the negative effects of stress on your body. A study showed that those who complain actually have higher self-esteem than those who bottle things up.

KIP MOORE’S ADVICE

KIP MOORE was recently asked what he tells new artists.  He said the most important thing is to have conviction in what you’re doing.  As in, be yourself, and don’t chase a trend because you think that’s what you should do.

He used himself as an example, saying if a song “doesn’t sit right” with him then he’s not going to enjoy playing it.  So if he doesn’t feel it when he’s on stage then the audience isn’t going to feel it either.

DAN + SHAY, KELSEA BALLERINI MAKE SURPRISE APPEARANCES AT JONAS BROTHERS CONCERT

Dan + Shay and Kelsea Ballerini made surprise appearances during Tuesday (September 10th) night’s Jonas Brothers concert in Nashville. Dan + Shay joined Nick, Kevin and Joe Jonas in a rendition of the duo’s hit “Tequila,” while Kelsea took the stage to join show opener Bebe Rexha on “Meant to Be.”

Kelsea also finally got to meet her longtime faves the Jonas Brothers. She posted an old video of herself as a teenager talking about why she should get to meet the trio on Instagram along with a new photo of herself with the brothers Tuesday night. She wrote, “Only took 12 years to win the JoBro meet & greet. swipe for my 2008 contest entry from DEEP IN THE ARCHIVES . . .”

You may recall that Dan + Shay sang their hit “Speechless” during Joe Jonas’ Las Vegas wedding to Sophie Turner after the 2019 Billboard Music Awards.

KEITH URBAN likes the Jonas boys too.  He posted a backstage pic with his arm around Joe.  He said, “Insanely great show.  You’ve got to go see this tour.  The energy in the arena was like Cape Canaveral.  Soooo good.”

BRAD PAISLEY TO PRODUCE, STAR IN TV COMEDY

Brad Paisley is headed to the small screen. Variety reports that he will star in and executive produce a TV comedy called Fish Out of Water. Following a multiple-outlet bidding war, the show has landed at Amazon.

The show is described as “a Larry Sanders take on celebrity vanity projects and a behind-the-scenes look at country music star Paisley’s struggle to keep a simple little fishing show from turning into his own personal Frye Festival.”

Over the years, Brad has made guest appearances on TV shows The Crazy Ones, According to Jim, King of the Hill and Nashville.
