On Today’s Show
October 11, 2019 9:35 am47-year-old Ronald Berry used to work as a subway cleaner for the MTA in New York, until he got fired a few years ago. But apparently no one told payroll. So for four years, he just kept showing up on payday to collect his paychecks.
And in that time they’ve paid him roughly $250,000. Then he went last Thursday to get his check, and cops arrested him. Ronald says he didn’t think he was doing anything wrong. He claims he went on sick leave for high blood pressure and asthma. And he thought the paychecks were legit. They arrested him for trespassing when he showed up to get his check. It’s not clear if he’s also facing fraud charges.

A woman named Isabel Albright from San Lorenzo, California died in December at age 102.
And when her family was recently going through her final mail, they found a bill from DirecTV . . . charging her a, quote, “early termination fee.”
That’s right: Even though she died at AGE 102, they still charged her family $160 to get out of the two-year contract she’d started so her nurse would have something to watch.
DirecTV kept saying the family had to pay up . . . until Isabel’s family went to the ABC station in San Francisco to tell them what happened.
THEN DirecTV agreed to waive the fee, saying, quote, “We have apologized to the family and resolved this.”

With “El Camino” making its Netflix debut today, “’Breaking Bad” creator Vince Gilligan has waited until the last minute to reveal the fate of Walter White. As fans know, Breaking Bad ends with Walter White (played by Bryan Cranston) lying on the ground in a pool of blood.
By all appearances, he was dead, although it was a little ambiguous in TV terms. With the new sequel, some have speculated that he might actually be alive, but Gilligan says that that is not the case. He confirmed the demise of White in a new interview.

St. Louis Bar Charges by the Hour Rather Than the Drink What Could Go Wrong?
This summer, word hit the digital street that a St. Louis city government employee was planning to open a bar called Open Concept that charged patrons by the hour rather than by the drink.
The bar launched Friday and plans to charge guests $10 per hour for access to premium beer, wine, and liquor; and $20 per hour for access to top-shelf beer, wine, and liquor.
Open Concept bills itself as an open bar to which guests pay to gain access; its website says “for an average price of $10 per hour you can drink as much as you can handle.” Customers are encouraged to buy their time in advance on the bars website, though walk-ins are also accepted. We’re surely not the first to think this sounds like a recipe for overconsumption.
But Butler says Open Concepts bartenders are trained like any other bars staff to recognize the signs of over consumption.

GOOD NEWS
A new study looked back at 70 years’ worth of research, and found people with dogs are less likely to die young IN GENERAL.
Researchers looked at the medical records of about four million people from the U.S., Canada, Scandinavia, New Zealand, Australia, and the U.K. And they found people with dogs are 24% less likely to die young for ANY reason.
Dog owners also have a 31% reduced risk of dying from heart disease. And when they do have a heart attack or stroke, they tend to recover faster.
The authors of the study found an even bigger difference for people who lived alone but had dogs. So companionship has a lot to do with it.
And the fact that dog owners get more exercise also plays a big role. Previous studies have found people who walk their dogs get up to 30 more minutes of exercise a day. And even just petting a dog has been shown to lower blood pressure.

THE ONE ABOUT CLEANING THE HOUSE:
Earlier in the week, we learned that watching old “Friends” episodes can help with the symptoms of anxiety.
Now it’s something a little more strenuous. Housecleaning. You may know someone who is living proof. Someone who, to them, taking a few minutes to sweep the kitchen floor, is just as soothing as meditation. There are a few explanations for why cleaning translates into lower levels of stress and anxiety for some.
Darby Saxbe, an assistant professor of psychology at the University of Southern California, says that cleaning gives people a sense of mastery and control over their environment. It allows us to assert our will on our living space.
People also sometimes turn to rituals—including cleaning—to reduce stress stemming from other parts of their lives.

LAUREN ALAINA DANCES TO DOLLY PARTON’S ‘JOLENE’ ON ‘DWTS’
In case you missed it, Lauren Alaina and her Dancing With the Stars partner Gleb Savchenko twirled their way to a score of 32 out of 40 points for Monday night’s (October 7th) episode of the show. Following the show, Lauren Alaina was excited about their performance and told us this over the phone: [“I don’t really get to pick the song, but at the start of the show I got to turn in my favorite songs. I filled out this paperwork that asked me who your favorites were. What’s your favorite movie> And finally, each week has been a surprise and each week, I’ve been like, you want me to do what? And this week, they’re like, you’re dancing to Jolene by Dolly Parton. Thank goodness! She’s my favorite. So, I don’t know if the fact that I danced to Dolly made me do better. I think I’ve heard that song a million times. Sang it a million times. I’m connected to that song already and I think my body could move to it so much easier.”]
