On Today’s Show

A century-old shipwreck stuck on rocks above Niagara Falls moved more than 150 feet downstream and crept closer to the edge for the first time in 101 years following a heavy storm on Halloween. It’s been there since 1918 and its new resting spot is close to the edge of Horseshoe Falls — the largest of the three falls there — with officials unsure of how long it will stay there.

If it does seem like the scow will go over the Falls, authorities will be notified so that precautions can be made to keep tourists well away.

The National Toy Hall of Fame just announced the three toys they’ll be inducting this year and they’re VERY eclectic picks.

The three toys that got enough votes from the experts to make it into the Toy Hall of Fame are:  Matchbox cars . . . “Magic:  The Gathering” cards . . . and coloring books.

The three toys that were inducted last year were the Magic 8 Ball, the pinball machine, and Uno.

ENTERTAINMENT

“Midway” won the box office this weekend, but it only made $17.5 million.  Three other new movies also made the Top Four:  “Doctor Sleep”“Playing with Fire”, and “Last Christmas” . . . all of them making between $11.6 and $14.1 million.

The biggest bust was probably “Doctor Sleep”, which made $14.1 million.  It was expected to make closer to $30 million.

There’s been a lot of focus on ALEX TREBEK’s health, but now there’s concern for “Wheel of Fortune” host PAT SAJAK.

Pat had emergency surgery to “correct a blocked intestine” last Thursday, and everything went well.  But VANNA WHITE will host the show while he recovers.

Vanna taped her first episodes on Friday, and they’ll air starting on December 9th.  There’s no official word how long Pat is expected out, but TMZ says it’ll be around two weeks.

Vanna has filled in for Pat once before, back when he had laryngitis in 1996.  They’ve co-hosted the show since 1983.

By the way, they’re in the middle of taping “Disney Week,” so it sounds like they’ll have Mickey Mouse turning the letters . . . at least for those episodes.  After that, it’s unclear who will do it.

TODAY IS……………….

  • “Veterans’ Day” in the USA, the 101st annual observance originally called “Armistice Day”, then renamed in 1954.

GOOD NEWS

The “New York Post” just profiled a Marine named Craig Grossi who found a malnourished dog in Afghanistan in 2010, and snuck it out. He recently wrote a book called “Craig & Fred” about how the dog’s optimistic nature changed his life.

Grossi said that while he had encountered several dogs during his time in the region, most of them were “big and mean and roamed around in packs.”

What made Fred different? Grossi credits his “stubborn positivity.”

Grossi said he had first spotted the dog “bouncing around the battlefield in between gunfights.” He first approached the dog when things began to calm down.

Fred appeared malnourished; his fur was matted and he was covered in insects. Grossi said he almost turned away from the dog when Fred began to “wag his tail.”

“I was like, ‘Are you kidding me?’ This dog has nothing to wag his tail about,” Grossi recalled.

After feeding Fred some spare beef jerky, Grossi said he felt an immediate connection with the dog, who “gently and politely” chewed what was his first meal in days.

Grossi, not yet finished with his deployment, snuck Fred out of Afghanistan and sent him home to his family in 2010 to be nursed back to health, returning home later that year.

He recently wrote a book called “Craig & Fred” about how the dog’s optimistic nature changed his life.

LEST WE FORGET . . .
Six things you probably didn’t know about poppies:

➢ There are more than 70 kinds:  The one in Flanders Fields is called “common poppy”, also known as “corn poppy” or even “Flanders poppy.” It is different from the kind of poppy that produces opioids, called the “opium poppy”

➢ Poppy seeds lie dormant until the ground is tilled:  When the soil is tilled to plant, say, corn, poppies often come up too (hence the name ‘corn poppy’). Presumably the digging of graves in Flanders Fields did the same.

➢ The poppy seeds in your bagel are mostly cultivated from the opium poppy:  That’s why poppy seeds are banned in several countries, including China — the worry is that they’ll be used to grow drugs.

➢ The 25-cent coin with the red poppy released by the Royal Canadian Mint in 2004 was the first circulated coin in the world to have color.

➢ About half of all legally grown poppies (for medicine) are grown in Tasmania.

➢ Poppies have been used by humans for thousands of years as traditional medicine. The remains of Neolithic humans in the Alps have been found with a pouch containing wheat, barley, and poppy. All poppies produce compounds that can have medicinal effects. The Flanders poppy makes a compound called rhoeadine that has effects on people, but it’s very mild compared to opium.

Binge-Watching Is the #1 Thing That Keeps Us Up Late, and 88% of Us Do It

The average American says their #1 priority in life is their family . . . and #2 is SLEEPING.  So you’d think we’d treat it with a little more respect than this . . .

A new survey asked people if they ever stay up later than they want, just to keep BINGE-WATCHING stuff on TV.  And 88% of us do it.  That includes 95% of people between 18 and 45.

Binge-watching is by far the #1 thing that keeps us up late.  Here are the top four . . .

  1. Streaming TV shows or movies.

  1. Reading.  71% of women and 61% of men have lost sleep because they couldn’t put down a book.

  1. Watching sports.  Just under 60% of us sometimes choose sports over sleep.  75% of men and 45% of women.

  1. Playing video games.  59% of men and 42% of women do it.  People under 35 are almost twice as likely to do it as people older than that.

So how do we feel when we wake up groggy the next morning?  24% of people in the survey also said they usually feel frustrated with themselves when they prioritize entertainment over sleep.

LADY ANTEBELLUM SHARE SPECIAL MILITARY MEMORY – (11/08/2019)

Lady Antebellum has entertained and connected with hundreds of our military men and women and our veterans throughout their career, and one unforgettable memory took place back in 2014 when they performed as part of the ABC-TV special, ACM Presents: An All-Star Salute to the Troops.  During their performance, they were joined on stage by some talented Marine Corps members, and backstage, the band was able to interact with even more current and former military members.

In honor of this upcoming Veterans Day (Monday, Nov. 11th), Hillary Scott recalls: [“One of the women, she gave me her bracelet in honor of her brother.  She had lost her brother over in Afghanistan, and so, I mean, it was awesome to be able to connect with these men and women who protect us on a daily basis.  And it just gives us even the smallest taste of what they walk with and have to live with, and the hurts and the highs and the lows of it every single day.  It was awesome.”]

Lady Antebellum will release their new album, Ocean, next Friday (Nov. 15th

CARRIE UNDERWOOD IS GUNNING FOR CMA ENTERTAINER: ‘SORRY, BOYS!’ –

This year’s CMA Entertainer of the Year nominees include Eric Church, Chris Stapleton, Keith Urban, Garth Brooks, and the lone female, Carrie Underwood. This is her second Entertainer nod from the Country Music Association and while the nomination is a big honor, Carrie tells us she’s gunning for that trophy. [“I personally feel like entertainer. It’s everything, right? So, I feel like people kind of narrow it down to tours, but I feel like there’s so many more components to it. And, you know, I’m blessed and lucky to be nominated, obviously, and fantastic company. It would be amazing, but of course, I’d be lying if I said I didn’t want it (laughs). Sorry, boys (laughs).”]

Carrie is also up for her 14th consecutive nomination for Female Vocalist, a title she’s won five times, including last year, as well as her fifth nomination for Album of the Year with Cry Pretty.
