On Today’s Show
November 12, 2019 9:35 amThere’s a guy named Kenny Morgan in Australia. And he was on a date on Tuesday, watching and betting on the Melbourne Cup horse races at a casino.
His date wasn’t really into him . . . and he says she told him, quote, “This isn’t going to go anywhere.”
But just as she was about to catch a bus home, one of Kenny’s longshots hit . . . and he won $553,000 on a $7 bet. And believe it or not . . . the woman changed her mind and decided to stick around. Kenny was nice enough to buy her drinks for the rest of the night . . . but after that, they went their separate ways and Kenny says, quote, “she’s been deleted now.”
He’s planning to use his money to buy a house.

Biotechnology researchers are trying to bring back the American chestnut tree, which was nearly wiped out by disease.
Scientists at New York’s College of Environmental Science and Forestry are seeking federal approval to reintroduce a modified chestnut they hope will be able to fight the disease.
Opponents are warning against experimenting in a highly complex ecosystem.
But a spokesperson for the American Chestnut Foundation says — quote — “If we don’t start playing God, soon we’re going to lose all our trees.”

Kiefer Sutherland might have invented the mullet . . . and he’s sorry. Back when he was making the 1987 vampire classic “The Lost Boys”, director Joel Schumacher wanted him to have long, white hair. Kiefer already had long hair but hated the way it looked after dying it. Then he saw Billy Idol with his spiky white hair, got his hair cut like that, and kept it long in the back to appease Schumacher. .

TODAY IS……………….
- “Chicken Soup for the Soul Day”, honoring the sappy series of feel-good books. Conventional wisdom says that chicken soup works wonders on the common cold. So, “chicken soup” became a shorthand for a cure-all, a mysterious-but-effective way to solve problems. Hence the book with the same title, which spawned a generation of sentimental spinoffs.

GOOD NEWS
A nine-year-old kid in England named Joe Whale kept getting in trouble at school for doodling in class.
The thing is, he’s a REALLY good doodler. His drawings are super creative, and he loves doing it. So instead of punishing him, his parents embraced it and signed him up for an art class.
His art teacher was so impressed, he posted a photo of his doodles on Instagram. Then the owner of a local restaurant saw them . . . and recently HIRED Joe to doodle all over one of the walls in the restaurant’s dining room.
Joe says he was intimidated at first, because the wall was huge. And he didn’t know how he’d come up with enough doodles to fill it.
But then things just started to flow, and it turned out great. You can check him out on Instagram. Just search for THE DOODLE BOY

LIES THAT YOU WERE TOLD AS A KID THAT YOU PROBABLY STILL BELIEVE:
☞ Gum will stay in your stomach for 7 years: Because of its low nutritional components, it does take longer than other food to digest, but gum will be out of your body in seven days at most.
☞ You can’t swim for an hour after eating: The story went that the body sent blood to the stomach (and away from your limbs) while it digested food, so your limbs would grow tired more quickly. A Mayo Clinic study confirmed that there is absolutely no scientific basis for this theory
☞ Watching TV too close to the screen will damage your eyes: Watching TV from any distance doesn’t cause any permanent eye damage whatsoever. The blue light coming out of the screen could cause eye strain, a temporary condition, but the blue light is going to affect your eyes in the exact same amount regardless of where you sit.
☞ Eating carrots will help your vision: Only if you have a really, roundabout way of looking at things. Vitamin A does help your eyesight, and while carrots don’t have any Vitamin A in them, they do have beta-carotene, which the body does convert into Vitamin A.
☞ Dogs only see in black and white: Dogs are not quite capable of seeing the full-colour spectrum that humans can, but it isn’t just shades of gray for them. Dogs see the colors of the world in yellows, blues, and grays. So, you may be better off getting a bright yellow toy for your dog than the more common red and orange.
☞ Peeing on a jellyfish sting alleviates the pain: This old wives’ tale is certainly effective in deterring people from coming too close to jellyfish. After all, no one wants to purposely pee on themselves—or worse, have a friend do it. But it doesn’t work. You should apply an acidic compound, such as vinegar, on the site of the sting, then use a flat object to scrape off the stinging cells.

COLD CURE:
Scientists say they may have found a cure for the common cold. The cold virus is a tricky thing, because there isn’t just one virus that’s behind the infection.
Many different respiratory viruses can bring on the common cold, but most are caused by rhinovirus infections. There are approximately 160 known types of rhinovirus, which explains why getting a cold doesn’t make you immune to picking up another one a month later.
But researchers at Stanford and the University of California say they may have found a way to stop many of these viruses in their tracks. They say they have found a certain protein which allows the viruses to replicate, and have been able to disable this protein, thus preventing infection.
But they caution that their research is still in the experimental stage, and a drug still needs to be developed for it to be put into widespread use.

POSITIVELY OLD:
Smile! Whether you want to or not. Because no one likes a grouch, and it may help you to live longer.
A new study has found that being a Debbie Downer could shorten your life, and being a glass-half-full kind of person just might help you live longer.
The study mostly looked at women — nearly 70,000 ladies participated, along with about 1,500 men. They completed a survey that ranked their level of optimism, tracking the women for 10 years and the men for 30 years.
And it was found that those who have a more positive outlook have an 11 to 15% longer lifespan, and 50 to 70% greater odds of reaching 85 years old compared to those who are less optimistic. And even after accounting for health behaviors such as alcohol use, diet and exercise, the researchers found that their cheeriest participants lived longer than the killjoys.

OLD DOMINION LEARNED THAT INDUSTRY AWARDS HAVE ‘RIPPLE EFFECT’
Old Dominion is defending their title as reigning Vocal Group of the Year at the CMA Awards when they head into this week’s awards ceremony in Nashville. The guys have also taken home the same honor twice at the ACM Awards.
While awards were never the band’s goal, Trevor Rosen tells us they learned that winning industry-voted awards took on a bigger meaning. [“You go into it and you go, ‘Awards are nice. That would be cool to win but that’s not why we got into it,’ and so you don’t put as much weight into that. I don’t think we did, and then after we won and we saw the ripple effect it had on all the people behind the scenes, you know? Not just the band but all of the people that work at our label and management and what a huge impact it had, and even just the other artists that congratulated us. Maybe we were guarding ourselves against it or whatever, but that was a big eye-opener to me is ‘this is a bigger thing than we realize it is.'”]
Old Dominion is also set to perform during the CMA Awards, which will air live on Wednesday (Nov. 13th) on ABC beginning at 8 p.m. ET.
The band’s new self-titled album recently debuted at Number One on the Billboard Country Albums chart.

THOMAS RHETT HAS ‘VERY LOW EXPECTATIONS’ GOING INTO CMA AWARDS
Thomas Rhett is no stranger to industry awards, having a growing collection to his credit already, but he tells us that going into tomorrow night’s (Wednesday, Nov. 13th) CMA Awards, he doesn’t have high expectations. [“I don’t know, it’s gonna be really fun. Every time I’m nominated, I go in with very low expectations for myself, but it’s always super cool when you do win, but just at the same time, this year to be nominated for Male Vocalist and Record of the Year – or Album of the Year, or whatever you wanna call it – is about the coolest award that I could be nominated for because you do spend so much time on the road writing and figuring out what the direction of the album is gonna be, and when you have that many people that have voted for an album like that, to be one of the top five or six is just mind blowing, so really excited. The CMAs are like one of my favorite nights of the year. I get to see everybody and get to dress up and it’s just gonna be a fun night.”]
Besides being nominated, Thomas will be performing his latest single, “Remember You Young,” on the 53rd Annual CMA Awards, airing live from Nashville’s Bridgestone Arena at 8 p.m. ET on ABC.
Jason Aldean Embraces Healthier Lifestyle, Drops Weight
Jason Aldean is keeping carbs and sugar at bay to live a healthier lifestyle. The superstar is noticeably thinner from just a few months ago, and he tells us it’s all due to a major overhaul of his diet. [“Earlier this year, I went and met with a nutritionist, and being on the road you just fall into this groove of just kind of eating like crap all the time and just eating at the wrong time of day, you know, when you come off stage at night. The biggest thing was I didn’t eat enough and I was eating way later than I should’ve, and so, man, I just kind of started eating better, honestly. (I) worked out a little bit and started eating better and I’m kind of back more to where my normal size would be now and it came from nothing other than just eating better.”]
Jason says he sticks to lots of protein and vegetables throughout the day, including several protein bars. His next studio album, 9, will include 16 new songs when it arrives at retailers on November 22nd.
Jason Aldean: Ride All Night Las Vegas will run from Dec. 6 – 8 in Sin City at Park Theater at Park MGM.
