On Today’s Show
December 13, 2019 9:35 amA real estate firm in Maryland called St. John Properties surprised its 198 employees with HUGE bonuses this year. At their holiday party on Saturday, the founder announced everyone would be splitting a $10 MILLION pool based on how many years they’ve been with the company. The average person got about $50,000, and everyone freaked out. He went on to explain that the company doesn’t work without its employees, and every single one of them deserved it.

Town officials in Wausau, Wisconsin clarified a story going around about their “no snowball fights” ordinance. They said it only pertains to people doing the wrong things with snowballs . . . like throwing them at moving cars or at someone who just happened to be walking by. They drove the point home by showing cops having a snowball fight, and showing the mayor getting hit in the back with a snowball.

TODAY IS……………….
- “Friday the 13th”, a bad day for those who suffer ‘triskaidekaphobia’ – fear of number 13, or ‘paraskevidekatriaphobia’ — fear of Friday the 13th. Every year has at least 1, but never more than 3.
- “Geminid Meteor Shower”, this annual event peaks tonight and into tomorrow morning. Some consider this the best meteor shower of the year.
- “Ice Cream Day”, it’s so good that there are multiple holidays dedicated to it. Most of them take place during the summer, but one is in December! A few fun facts …
– Perhaps surprisingly, the most popular flavor is vanilla, snagging about 26% of total sales. Chocolate comes in a distant 2nd, with about 13% of the market.
– The largest ice cream sundae in history was made by Palm Dairies in Edmonton AB on July 24, 1988. It weighed in at over 24 tons.

REASONS PEOPLE THINK THE NUMBER 13 IS UNLUCKY:
✓ There’s a Norse legend that has 12 gods sitting down to a banquet when the 13th (uninvited) god, Loki, shows up. He sets off a chain of events that leads to a slew of natural disasters.
✓ There were 13 people at the Last Supper. It’s said that Judas Iscariot was the 13th to take his place at the table.
✓ Traditionally there used to be 13 steps leading up to a hangman’s gallows. There’s also a legend that a hangman’s noose traditionally contained 13 turns.
✓ There was a mass arrest and execution of the Knights Templar on Friday, October 13, 1307.
✓ Although any group of witches is now considered a ‘coven’, it was once believed to be made up of exactly 13 members.
✓ Kids officially become teenagers at the age of 13 … and we all know that’s a scary phase.

GOOD NEWS
Do you have people in your life who you’re always waiting on because they’re always late? And it makes you really annoyed?
Well, here’s the bright side, sort of: At least THEY’RE happy.
According to a study out of Harvard Medical School, people who are always running late tend to be HAPPIER and HEALTHIER than the rest of us.
And they live longer too . . . so apparently they’re even late when it comes to dying.
Why is being late so mentally healthy? The researchers say it’s because people who are always late tend to have an extra sense of CALMNESS . . . and it adds years to their lives.

EXPERTS: TURNING THE HEAT ON BEFORE BED CAN MAKE IT HARDER TO SLEEP
It’s nearly winter now, and it can be tempting to crank the heat up, but you should try to avoid doing so right before bed.
Sleep expert James Wilson says it’s actually better to let your bedroom get a bit cooler before turning in for the night, and it’s because it encourages the body to drop to the core temperature needed to fall asleep successfully.
He says the temperature between your mattress and your comforter should be between 80 and 84 degrees Fahrenheit, so you should focus on making the bedroom feel cooler than the rest of the house.
Another experts warns that leaving the heat on all night can leave you thirsty and suffering with dry mouth the next morning, meaning you’re dehydrated, which makes you more prone to infections.

SWEARING WHILE EXERCISING HELPS YOU BURN BELLY FAT FASTER
Working out hard can be enough to drive anyone to swear, but it turns out doing so could actually be beneficial.
Keele University researchers found that spewing out expletives while working out increases pain tolerance and triggers an adrenaline response.
This in turn makes you work out harder, therefore maximizing your calorie burn.
The scientists think we evolved so that swearing is used as a tool to withstand pain by triggering the “fight or flight” response.

Brantley Gilbert Has a Christmas Tree in Every Room of the House
BRANTLEY GILBERT has gotten a lot softer since marriage and kids. He even has a new appreciation for Christmas. He’s always loved the holiday, but not nearly as much as his wife Amber. She’s over-the-top crazy about it.
He says, QUOTE, “Our house looks like the [friggin’] North Pole, man. I mean, literally, they take Thanksgiving dinner off the table and right at that moment, like, the centerpiece is like a little Christmas tree. “She’s got a Christmas tree in every room . . . literally every room in the house. Our dog has a Christmas tree. Our little boy has a Christmas tree. We got a Christmas tree in the bedroom. They’re everywhere.”

MIRANDA LAMBERT SAYS ‘BLUEBIRD’ HAS ‘HOPE TO IT’
Miranda Lambert just finished up at a songwriter’s festival in Maui, along with other artists including Randy Houser, and Willie Nelson. She now heads home for the Christmas holiday. We talked with Miranda about her new single, “Bluebird, and she described what it meant to her: [It’s got, it makes me feel- It kind of makes me go inward a little bit and think about the lyrics, and it’s got this hope to it. It’s got a darkness to though, but it’s also hopeful in a way of life is going to give me lemons, period. Like, if there wasn’t problems, we wouldn’t appreciate the great days, you know? But going through those things and overcoming problems, whatever they are make us strong and appreciate the sun. You know, 10 straight days of rain and then the sun comes out. And you are like, I forgot how much I loved it!]
“Bluebird” is from the album, Wildcard.
JON PARDI IS OFF TO HAWAII FOR A FAMILY HOLIDAY – (12/13/2019)
This year, Jon Pardi is planning on a warm holiday season. He’s taking his fiancée, her parents, his mom, and his sister to Hawaii to celebrate and then be home by Christmas Eve. They’ve made a deal with each other – not to exchange gifts this year, but it hasn’t always been that way. We talked to Jon about one of the most important gifts he ever received. He told us this: [One Christmas I got a guitar, but I was real young, so this guitar spent multiple nights in the backyard and probably got hit by a sprinkler. I was a kid. I didn’t know what to do with this thing. It was like I knew how to strum it, but I didn’t know how to take care of it. I must’ve been six or five, you know, I thought it was kind of a toy then, but it started the whole spark. So, I always kind of say, I always tell parents you just never know, if you get a little toy that’s a guitar or drum set, you never know what that’ll spark in a child’s mind. So, who would’ve known if I had never gotten that guitar?]
Great Things That Happened on Friday the 13th
It’s Friday the 13th, but it’s also the holiday season. So let’s focus on something positive. Here are some GREAT things that happened on a Friday the 13th.
- We got to play “Super Mario Bros.”for the first time. The video game “Super Mario Bros.” was released in Japan on Friday, September 13th, 1985. It made its way to America shortly after that.
- A bunch of great birthdays. Lots of famous people were born on Friday the 13th, including the Olsentwins, Julia Louis-Dreyfus, Steve Buscemi, Christopher Plummer, and Darius Rucker.
But one famous person who WASN’T born on Friday the 13th is Alfred Hitchcock . . . it’s just a common rumor. He was born on August, 13th, 1899, which was a Sunday.
- It’s the last day before the weekend. If nothing else, just remember: Even Friday the Thirteenths are the last day of the work week. And that makes them a great thing.
CHRIS LANE went to a Planet Fitness with his wife, “Bachelor” alum LAUREN BUSHNELL. And when she started doing her high school cheerleading routine, he filmed it. And because there’s an Internet, we get to see it.
