On Today’s Show

A guy in Utah didn’t realize his 24 Hour Fitness center WASN’T open 24 hours, and got locked inside when they closed for the night.  Now he’s a hit online after posting photos of the ordeal.  He says he walked around the whole building looking for an exit, until cops finally showed up and got him out.

The 2017 and 2018 World Series had something in common . . . and no, it’s not that they’re both the subject of CHEATING investigations, although that’s true, too.

The L.A. Dodgers lost both of them.  In 2017, they lost to the Houston . . . and then in 2018, they lost to Boston. Major League Baseball has found that the Astros engaged in electronic sign-stealing in 2017, and it looks like the Red Sox did some similar cheating in 2018.  But it DOESN’T sound like the MLB will be stripping their titles.

Nevertheless, the L.A. City Council is expected to vote on a resolution urging baseball to RECALL the championship trophies, and “award them to the L.A. Dodgers.”

Speaking of scandals, the latest rumor is that the Astros used BUZZERS this past year on their bodies which notified them of what pitches were coming.  Major League Baseball says there’s NO PROOF that this is true, and Jose Altuve is denying it.

Daniel Radcliffe isn’t a famous face to everyone! He shared a story about once being mistaken for a homeless man. On the Graham Norton Show, he said: “I was in New York…with my girlfriend and while she was in a shop, I was outside with our…dog. It was very cold, and I had on a hoodie, a fleece and then a big coat over the top . . . I knelt down to warm the dog and I saw this guy looking at me and then he walked past me…then he came back and handed me five dollars and said, ‘Get yourself a coffee mate.’ Radcliffe finished his story by saying: Apparently, I need to shave more often!”

GOOD NEWS

A guy in South Carolina named Adam Gorlitsky was paralyzed from the waist down in a car crash in 2005.  But he hasn’t let it hold him back.  And over the weekend, he set a pretty amazing WORLD RECORD.

He’s learned to walk again using a robotic exoskeleton that straps to his legs.  And on Saturday, he walked across the finish line after completing a FULL MARATHON.

He walked the Charleston Marathon in exactly 33 hours, 50 minutes, and 24 seconds.  Which beat the previous world record by about three hours.

It took him a year of training, and this wasn’t his first attempt.  He tried walking the Los Angeles Marathon last year, but had to stop about 17 miles in.

This time, he made it all 26.2 miles.  And he says he couldn’t have done it without his friends and family.

Charleston is his hometown.  So a ton of people came out to support him.  They’d walk a mile alongside him.  Then other friends would show up to walk the next mile.

He says he did it to send a message to people that your disabilities and adversities should never define who you are.

How Long Will You Stay on Hold? And What Type of Music Do You Hate Least?

More than one in five will stay on hold with customer service INDEFINITELY, according to a new poll.

31% will only wait five minutes . . . 34% will wait up to 15 minutes before they hang up . . . and 22% said they’ll stay on the phone “as long as [they] need to.”

The remaining 13% said they REFUSE to wait on hold.  They’ll either request a call back, or find another way to get in touch.

One in seven people also said they wish HOLD MUSIC wasn’t a thing.  15% of us would rather sit and stew in silence while we wait. The most popular type of hold music is classical with 20% of the vote.  Country music and “rock or pop” tied for second . . . then hip hop.

Just over a quarter of us think that “listening to annoying music or repeated messages while on hold” is one of the most annoying things about customer service.

And 80% of us have gotten so frustrated, we’ve either started SWEARING at a customer service rep, or broken down in tears.

SAD TIME OF YEAR:
Seasonal affective disorder, or SAD, is a kind of depression that appears at certain times of the year. It usually begins in the fall when the days get shorter and lasts through the winter in northern countries.  Here are some tips to Ease Winter SAD Symptoms:

⇒ Spend more time outdoors during the day.

⇒ Try to arrange the spaces you spend time in to maximize sunlight exposure

⇒ Keep curtains open during the day.

⇒ Build physical activity into your lifestyle preferably before SAD symptoms take hold.

⇒ Make a habit of taking a daily noon-hour walk, particularly if you commute to school or work in the dark hours of the day.

⇒ Try to resist the carbohydrate and sleep cravings that come with SAD.

⇒ When all else fails, try a winter vacation in sunny climates—if the pocketbook and work schedule allow.

There are professional treatments for SAD as well, including light therapy, medication and counselling.

Today is the 100th anniversary of the start of Prohibition.  It lasted 13 years, from January 1920 until December 1933.  Here’s a clip from Ken Burns’ “Prohibition” documentary that explains how much people were drinking in the years before prohibition kicked in.

WOMEN ON COUNTRY RADIO

There is currently a tweet causing a lot of angst on social media. It all started when veteran entertainment journalist Chris Willman posted, “I turned on the 105.1 country station in L.A. just now, and they were playing the new song by Gabby Barrett, and then, without any pause or interruption at all, they went into a Kelsea Ballerini song. Can’t they get fined for that?”

He was being sarcastic, but as it turns out, he wasn’t wrong.

A radio station in Michigan stirred up a storm yesterday for a now-deleted Tweet saying they’re not allowed to play two female country artists back to back.

“We cannot play two females back to back. Not even Lady Antebellum or Little Big Town against another female,” they wrote. “I applaud their courage. Pop audiences are more welcoming and forgiving of their female singers. I kinda like that. The Country audience not so much. They accepted Taylor because their daughters loved her.”

That got the attention of, oh . . . let’s say every female country artist alive.

Here are a couple we can actually quote.  KACEY MUGRAVES Tweeted that it’s “male B.S.” . . . and KELSEA BALLERINI got creative and listed 12 female country artists by name . . . and told Alexa to play all of them in a row.

Brandi Carlile was on “Full Frontal with Samantha Bee” the other night.  They asked for her take on why we need more females in country music.  She said, quote, “Anyone that listens to country music, ask yourself this question:  ‘What do you want your daughter to know about herself.’  And if you can’t get that from country music, it’s a problem.”

BRETT YOUNG LIKES TO FLEX HIS KITCHEN SKILLS

Brett Young is enjoying his time at home these days with his wife, Taylor, and his infant daughter, Presley. In addition to being a hands-on dad, Brett’s been taking on some of the household duties, including preparing meals.

He tells us that while he’s not the best cook he enjoys getting in the kitchen. [“I think as far as guys go, I’m decent in the kitchen. I do enjoy cooking, so I’m really fortunate, both my mom, my mother-in-law, and my now wife are all very good in the kitchen. So, anything I screw up they’ve got like, a backup item.  But I like to be involved, I like to cook, and one of the things I really like to do is kind of just like, throw things together, you know, look in the fridge see what odds and ends we have and try to come up with something. I hate to waste food and so, yeah, I enjoy it. I would say I’m average, maybe better than most guys.”]

Brett plays his first show of the year with Lady Antebellum on Jan. 19th in Orlando, FL.
