A family’s dog in North Carolina gave birth to a GREEN PUPPY.  It’s from a litter of eight, and all the rest are either black or white like the mother.  The vet clinic people say the pup’s fur was stained green by meconium in the birth sack.  It’ll go away after a while, and it’ll be white like its siblings.

The City of Toronto has ordered the owners of home that built a deck facing directly into their neighbour’s bedroom to stop work and either remove the structure or apply for a building permit. A building inspector conducted a site visit and Toronto Building will be issuing an order requiring the property to stop work and obtain a building permit for the construction.”

“The property owner can decide to remove the structure or apply for a building permit. During the building permit application process, staff will review the plans against the current zoning and Ontario Building Code in order to determine what would be permitted.”

ENTERTAINMENT

Even celebrities have first date horror stories. During an appearance on Jimmy Kimmel Live, Charlize Theron and host Jimmy Kimmel chatted about her love of The Bachelor, which devolved into Kimmel asking the Oscar winner if she’s had her own cringe-worthy dates like those seen on the famed dating show. Unfortunately for Theron, the answer was yes.

TODAY IS……………….

  • “Squirrel Appreciation Day”. There are over 200 types of squirrels in North America alone, which can be put into three groups:  Ground squirrels, tree squirrels and flying squirrels, which cannot actually fly, but have flaps of skin that allow them to glide from tree to tree

  • “Sweatpants Day”, introduced in the 1920s by Émile Camuset, the founder of Le Coq Sportif, a sports equipment and clothing company. The original sweatpants were knitted gray jersey pants which were designed to help athletes exercise easier.

  1. In polo, it’s been illegal to hold your mallet in your left hand since 1974, because if two right handed people are charging at a ball from opposite directions, the horses won’t collide.  But if a righty and lefty are, the horses will hit each other.

  1. The first basketball was a soccer ball.  When the game was first being played in the 1890s, that was the best option available.

GOOD NEWS

Ken Jennings was the biggest “Jeopardy” story of the week after he won the “Greatest of All Time” tournament.  But this might be our FAVORITE “Jeopardy” story . . .

Back in June, a kid from Oregon named Avi Gupta won the “Teen Tournament,” and took home $100,000.

Then in November, he donated $10,000 of it to a hospital in Portland to help fund cancer research.  Specifically pancreatic cancer in honor of Alex Trebek, who’s currently fighting it.

When he made the donation, he hoped it would inspire other people to pitch in.  And it turns out that plan worked in a very big way.

This week, he revealed that in less than three months, random people have donated over 200 GRAND to the hospital’s pancreatic cancer center.

He says he’s excited that the campaign has been so successful, because Alex was one of his idols growing up.

CHASING DOWN A KIDNAPPER
Massachusetts police are praising a couple for helping locate the suspect in the abduction of an 11-year-old girl.

Charlotte Moccia was kidnapped last Wednesday. Witnesses said the child was fighting her abductor as she was forced into a blue Honda Civic. A couple spotted that car and helped lead police to the suspect and Charlotte.

Miguel Rodriquez, 24, has been arrested in connection with the abduction of the little girl. Police said he has a criminal history. Amanda Disley and her husband Benny Correa were just picking up dinner Wednesday night, all while reports spread of the abduction. They were at a stop sign when they spotted the car. “I said, ‘Yo babe, that’s that car. That’s that car! I seen that car. You showed me that car. That’s the car!’” Correa said.

To make sure they weren’t mistaken, Disley quickly pulled up a picture of the suspected car she saw on Facebook. That’s when they took a right and began to follow it. They followed behind him while on the phone with 911. “And that’s when – when he noticed that we were really chasing him all the way down the side streets, he just started blowing through every single red light and my husband blew through every single red light with him.” Disley said.

The couple was not giving up and refused to let the suspect get away. They never expected to be in that position, with their own five kids in their car, but they knew that in the car they were chasing, it was possibly life or death for another child. The two praised Police for their response because as they were chasing the suspect, they ran out of gas.

Their car also took a beating. “We blew our suspension, our tire. I hit some dirt” While their car is damaged, they say that’s nothing considering the role they played in making sure Charlotte is back with her family and safe.

EXERCISE JUST AS GOOD AS COFFEE

Those feeling mentally drained should try a brisk 20-minute walk before turning to coffee for a boost, according to a new study out of Western University.

In a first of its kind head-to-head comparison of caffeine vs exercise, researchers discovered even short bursts of physical activity match caffeine in enhancing working memory, attention, and alertness.

For the study, a 20-minute walk on a treadmill was tested against drinking one cup of coffee.

The results were the same for both regular coffee drinkers and people who abstain from caffeine.

Anisa Morava, a graduate student in Western’s Exercise and Health Psychology Laboratory, notes the findings are positive news for those who can’t consume coffee, such as anxiety sufferers or individuals who experience muscle tremors as it gives them a brain power boost alternative.

She states it can also help the over caffeinated, people who drink more than four cups of coffee a day, to curb their consumption.

COFFEE PERK:
A new study suggests that drinking caffeinated beverages, including coffee and tea, could help you to keep off the pounds.

Scientists at the University of Illinois found that consuming caffeine can limit weight gain and cholesterol production, even when ingested as part of a diet that contains high levels of fat and sugar.

INGRID ANDRESS HOPES PEOPLE ‘KEEP AN OPEN MIND’ ABOUT NEW COUNTRY MUSIC

Ingrid Andress is blazing her own trail in country music and she’s grateful to have come along at a time when she’s supported for doing it her way. There’s a lot of controversy over what defines Country music these days, but Ingrid tells us she hopes people will be willing to listen to the many diverse sounds coming out of the genre. [“I just feel like if you’re angry about it you’re just kind of closing the door to something that could be really cool, especially for this next generation of people. I have friends that I’ve grown up with as songwriters like Hardy and Mitchell Tenpenny and to know that we have the ability to like branch out and do cool stuff would be awesome and I just hope people keep an open mind about it.”]

She’ll hit the road with Dan + Shay beginning in March, and then Tim McGraw has just tapped the rising star to open his Here On Earth Tour this summer.

FAST FACTS

Ingrid will play the All For The Hall concert to benefit the Country Music Hall of Fame & Museum at the Bridgestone Arena on February 10th along with Keith Urban, Blake Shelton, Chris Stapleton, Luke Combs and Brothers Osborne, among others.
